Abstract Flavonoid structures, found in nature or obtained by synthesis, may be very complex. These Recommendations provide a guide for flavonoid aglycone names. This will also allow the construction of the names for their polyglycosylated species with clarity and conciseness. A joint working party of IUPAC/IUBMB members has prepared these recommendations, which establish rules for the general nomenclature of flavonoids, providing examples of acceptable trivial names, and names derived from trivial names, together with semi-systematic and fully systematic names that follow the published IUPAC recommendations.

Abstract Four flavonoids have been identified from the leaf and stem resin produced by Baccharis bigelovii (Asteraceae) in addition to twelve previously described aglycones. A flavonol (alnusin) and a dihydroflavonol (alnustinol) with 3,5,7-trihydroxy substitution had both been reported only twice before. The novel compound 2β,5,7-trihydroxy-flavanone is remarkable for its 2β-substitution at the heterocyclic ring. 7-Benzoyl-chrysin is the first flavone aglycone found as ester and the first flavonoid aglycone at all that is esterified with an aromatic acid.

Abstract The defatted flours of 43 colored and one white testa peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) genotypes were analyzed for flavonoids. Flavonoids were extracted from the flours with aqueous methanol, hydrolyzed, and the resulting aglycones analyzed by high pressure liquid chromatography with a variable wavelenth detector. The UV spectrum and retention time coupled with those of standards allowed for the tentative identification of the principal flavonoid aglycone as 5,7-dihydroxyisoflavone (DHI).

The flavonoid aglycone content of ethyl acetate fraction of Saussurea salicifolia (L.) DC was analysed by the HPLC “Agilent” 1100 with Alltech C18 μm column, UV254 detector, flow rate: 1 ml/min, mobile phase: acetonitrile: water:acetic acid (36:65:1). Eleven flavonoid aglycones in the ethyl acetate fraction of Saussurea salicifolia were detected by HPLC analysis. The quantification of each compound was done according to the peak area measurements which were reported in calibration curves of the corresponding standards. The result revealed that Saussurea salicifolia consists of flavonoid aglycones of quercetin (28.62%) and kaempferol (3.01%).
