Agriculture is one of the Nation’s most efficient industries. The cost of living for the average consumer would be considerably higher today without the low cost of food supplied by United States agriculture. This is particularly significant at a time when we hear so much about poverty in the United States and in other countries. Had it not been for the extremely low costs of food, there would be many more poverty stricken families today. Paper published with permission.

Many technical processes such as the ones found in the Citrus Industry involve the flow of fluids. The flow of these fluids must be closely controlled to achieve the desired results. To be able to do this it is essential to understand the characteristics of the flowing fluids and to recognize the basic laws of nature governing this flow. With this information and knowledge it is then possible to accomplish the objectives with nature helping the process. Paper published with permission.

I meet with you today as a representative of one of the oldest of all industries … one that dates back some 10,000 years. Within the industry, progress during the 20th century has far outstripped the earlier achievements of thousands of years of technological advancement. Paper published with permission.

“The orange juice tastes a little funny this morning.” With these immortal words, the chief purchasing agent of my household was ready for a permanent, if not lethal boycott of one of the major name brands of frozen Florida orange juice concentrate. She had opened the can the same morning, and she was right — it did have a hint of “5-day old” taste. She was wrong, though, in her choice of the culprit. Paper published with permission.

Until two or three years ago, the conventional method of getting canned, glassed, or packaged goods to market was to load them into a top-opening regular printed and slotted corrugated case. The packaging operation itself had become pretty well automated through use of drop type and push in equipment. Some had completely automated the system with automatic case openings positioning and gluing and sealing machines. By far the bulk of the packing industry was still in the semi-automatic stage of manual case opening and placing the case on the packer funnel to complete the loading cycle, prior to discharge and conveying to the gluer. Paper published with permission.
