Being exposed to vibration and noise in our daily life, to such an extent, that laws have recently been passed to control them (noise pollution), an understanding of the underlying principles is becoming more and more important. Paper published with permission.

The thermoforming process (up until most recently) has not made any significant penetration into the metal and foil fiber can area. We have found the same to be true with the thermoform-spin weld process in the glass bottle area. Now, however, with the technical breakthroughs that have been made in both processes, coupled with the availability of a much greater variety of plastic materials; plastic cans and bottles will command a very respectable share of the total market within the next five years. This paper is intended to disclose knowledge of present day methods for the production of pectin and dried pectin peel by citrus fruit processing plants in Florida and in California. This study cannot be considered a complete presentation since information is not available from all producing plants. Some domestic and foreign operations can not disclose their methods due to management regulations concerning proprietary information. There are other plants where the writer has not been able to obtain specific information. Paper published with permission.

Hypochlorite and iodophor germicides are compared with regard to physical, chemical and sanitizing properties. The influence of pH on the germicidal characteristics are evaluated and the theory of mechanism of germicidal action reviewed. Hypochlorite and iodophor are compared under a variety of use conditions of temperature concentration, presence of organic matter, and different materials of construction. The economics of sanitizing with hypochlorite and iodophor is reviewed with various dispensing equipment. Paper published with permission.

Spiral wound can manufacturing is an old art. The early cans were used primarily for dry products such as salt and cereals. During World War II the metal shortage precipitated the manufacture of spiral-wound composite paint cans. With the end of the war, this not too successful container reverted to its original metal construction — but a seed had been planted and development continued until, during the 1950’s, the composite biscuit conister became a reality. In 1961, many separate developments led to the award-winning orange juice concentrate can introduced by H. P. Hood and Sons. Paper published with permission.

“The 1970’s absolutely must be the years when America pays its debt to the past by reclaiming the purity of its air, its waters and our living environment” — President Nixon Let us begin this discussion on future water requirements, uses, priorities and economics, by talking about population trends. The National Research Council expects the world population to double from about 3. 5 billion to 7 billion by the year 2000. Florida’s population, estimated by Kiplinger, to be in excess of 6,000,000 now, is anticipated to exceed 9,000,000 by 1980. In addition, the state now “enjoys” the visit of an additional 20 million tourists, fortunately spread rather evenly at weekly intervals throughout the year. The prospects of the future, with Disney World, Roy Roger’s Cowport, the associated supporting facilities, and an increase in commuting residents frankly scares the hell out of me. Paper published with permission.
