Directivity Enhancement of a Broadband Printed Antenna by Using Two Closely Spaced Strips

The bandwidth of a printed rectangular loop antenna with two gaps can be enlarged by using the metallic strips as directors. However, the directivity is not good. Because the two closely spaced metallic strips act as a building block, they can be used to block the propagation of electromagnetic waves. Therefore, two closely spaced metallic strips as a new reflector are adopted and investigated in this paper for improving the directivity of antenna. Two arrangement modes of the printed antennas with two closely spaced strips are designed, fabricated, and measured. Experimental results show that the impedance bandwidth of type A antenna (with inner strip) is about 62.5% ranging from 2.3 to 4.39 GHz. In addition, the gain of 3.8–5.2 dBi and 2 dB improvement of F/B ratio are achieved. Type B antenna (with outer strip) can realize a 62% measured bandwidth ranging from 2.29 to 4.35 GHz. Also, about 3.4 to 4.9 dBi of gain with 2.5 dB improvement of F/B ratio is obtained. The measured F/B ratios of the two modified antennas are both better than 10 dB within the operating frequency band. Measured results verified that adopting the two closely spaced metallic strips as a new reflector can both enhance the F/B ratio and gain without changing the overall dimensions and operating frequency.

Miniature Compact Folded Dipole for Metal Mountable UHF RFID Tag Antenna

This article describes the design of an Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) miniature folded dipole Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag antenna that can be mountable on metallic objects. The compact tag antenna is formed from symmetric C-shaped resonators connected with additional arms embedded into the outer strip lines for miniaturization purposes. It is loaded with outer strip lines, resulting in a flexible tuning method that is capable of matching the integrated circuit (IC) chip’s impedance. The proposed tag is fabricated on a single layer of Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) substrate. It has simple structure and does not require any metallic vias or shorting plate. The miniature tag antenna with a size of 82.75 × 19.5 × 1.5 mm 3 yields a total realized gain of − 0.53 dB at the resonance frequency when attached to a 40 × 40 cm 2 metal plate. The presented design utilizes a European RFID band, and the simulated results of realized gain, read range, and input impedance are verified with measurement results.

Compact Printed Antenna for Mobile Phone

A small-size printed antenna is proposed for the application of mobile phones. The antennacomprisesan outer strip, an inner strip, and a common section.It not only occupies a compact area of 25 × 20 mm² butalsosupports two wide bandswithinthe resonantmodes. Prototypes of the antenna had been constructed and experimentally verified. The measured results of the antenna show the bandwidth cover the existing service bands of GSM/DCS/PCS/UMTS within 6 dB return loss specification, and also have good radiation patterns and antenna gains.This antenna is well suitable to be used for mobile phone application.

Regulation of sodium transporters in the thick ascending limb of rat kidney: response to angiotensin II

The effect of ANG II treatment of rats for 7 days was examined with respect to the abundance and subcellular localization of key thick ascending limb (TAL) Na+ transporters. Rats were on a fixed intake of Na+ and water and treated with 0, 12.5, 25, 50 (ANG II-50), 100 (ANG II-100), and 200 (ANG II-200) ng·min-1·kg-1 ANG II (sc). Semiquantitative immunoblotting revealed that Na+/H+ exchanger 3 (NHE3) abundance in the inner stripe of the outer medulla (ISOM) of ANG II-treated rats was significantly increased: 179 ± 28 (ANG II-50, n = 5), 166 ± 23 (ANG II-100, n = 7), and 167 ± 19% (ANG II-200, n = 4) of control levels ( n = 6, P < 0.05), whereas lower doses of ANG II were ineffective. The abundance of the bumetanide-sensitive Na+-K+-2Cl- cotransporter (BSC-1) in the ISOM was also increased to 187 ± 28 (ANG II-50), 162 ± 23 (ANG II-100), and 166 ± 19% (ANG II-200) of control levels ( P < 0.05), but there were no changes in the abundance of Na+-K+-ATPase and the electroneutral Na+-HCO3 cotransporter NBCn1. Immunocytochemistry confirmed the increase in NHE3 and BSC-1 labeling in medullary TAL (mTAL). In the cortex and the outer strip of the outer medulla, NHE3 abundance was unchanged, whereas immunocytochemistry revealed markedly increased NHE3 labeling of the proximal tubule brush border, suggesting subcellular redistribution of NHE3 or differential protein-protein interaction. Despite this, ANG II-treated rats (50 ng·min-1·kg-1 for 5 days, n = 6) had a higher urinary pH compared with controls. NH4Cl loading completely blocked all effects of ANG II infusion on NHE3 and BSC-1, suggesting a potential role of pH as a mediator of these effects. In conclusion, increased abundance of NHE3 and BSC-1 in mTAL cells as well as increased NHE3 in the proximal tubule brush border may contribute to enhanced renal Na+ and HCO3 reabsorption in response to ANG II.
