This chapter considers Fawwaz’s use of contemporary Arabic sources, notably the Arab world’s first modern encyclopedia (produced in the last quarter of the nineteenth century), a world history in Arabic, and contemporary magazines published in Egypt. Her use of these sources challenges scholars’ tendencies to categorise intellectuals of the time according to their origins and religious affiliations, for Fawwaz drew liberally on these works by Syrian Christian writers and reformers as well as briefly on a Turkish-language compilation. The chapter incorporates a study of the Bustani encyclopedia focusing on its treatment of biography as well as its articulated sense of readership, and its use of a modern apparatus of subject organisation and alphabetization, which Fawwaz followed to a large degree, while cleverly maintaining the sense of Islamic priority evident in early biographical dictionaries by placing Muhammad’s mother Amina at the very start of her volume. The chapter continues the analysis of the previous chapter of how Fawwaz appropriated and modified the contents and diction of her sources.

Abstract Suction controlled triaxial testing of unsaturated medium sand and sandy clay. This paper presents the results of the triaxial tests performed on medium sand and sandy clay samples. The shear strength and deformation characteristics from consolidated drained (CD) tests performed in a controlled saturation state were determined. The study was conducted in a modern apparatus for triaxial testing of unsaturated samples. Test specimens with a diameter of 70 mm and height of 140 mm were prepared by compaction in a laboratory in a special form. The main aim of this study was to investigate the effect of matric suction on the shear strength and deformation characteristic of medium sand and sandy clay. The axis translation technique was used to apply matric suction to soil specimens.

Gymnastics is included in the physical education at all school levels. Gymnastic skills learned in the gymnastic games may specifically contribute to the development of pupils’ skills, promote physical literacy level, contribute to the development of selected components of physical fitness and stimulate movement creativity. Nowadays the concept of gymnastics as an apparatus exercises, is not enough included in school physical education programs. The reasons are: unsatisfactory range of teachers preparation, traditional teaching methods or no equipment and apparatus at school gyms. One possible significant changes in the approach of teaching is to use gymnastic games and newly designed types of equipment and programs created under the concept of curriculum Gymnastics for all (GFA).Gymnastic games along with modern apparatus are attractive, appealing and inspiring for specific movement skills. They improve safety of training, and expand the range of creativity. We assume that the modernization and inovation of teaching gymnastics through gymnastic games will develop pupils’ competence, increase the level of physical literacy, increase the number of skills and becomes an important motivation for lifelong physical activity leading to a healthy lifestyle.

In this paper, a study regarding the air pollution in Cluj-Napoca City has been conducted. Thus, the SO2, NOx, NO and NO2 parameter values were monitored using modern apparatus of air quality monitoring station, located in Cluj-Napoca city. The values were measured daily at 14 o’clock during March, 2011. Using the analyzed data, the maximum and minimum limits of air pollutants were quantified. Thus, it was assessed that the pollution is higher from Monday till Friday and it decreases during Saturday and Sunday. According to the analyzed data, a series of proposals to Cluj-Napoca city management were elaborated in order to reduce air pollution.

Satraplatin is a platinum coordination with antitumour activity, which is the first platinum-based antitumour drug administrated by oral route. The phase III clinical trial used in the treatment of patients with hormone-refractory prostate cancer of Ssatraplatin has been finished. Its prepararation method was introduced in this paper, and its chemical structure was identified by using the modern apparatus analysis means such as elemental analyses, mass spectrum, infrared spectrum and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum. The results showed that its composition and structure were consistent with the theoretical one
