This research investigates the significance of the conch shell in the novel Lord of the Flies written by William Golding. The focus of this research is to examine the meaning of the conch shell as one of the most important symbols and to observe the dynamic of the main characters in relation to power. The research applies textual formalism approach to uncover the meaning of the symbol. Furthermore, this research is also supported with sociological approach to relate the literary work with the reality of the social condition during that era and to get a better understanding of the characterization of the main characters in the novel. The main data used in this research is the novel Lord of the Flies. To support this analysis, additional data is taken from various sources such as books and academic journals. The result of this analysis shows that conch is symbol of democratic power and order. Furthermore, the conch leads us to understand that we must have rules and authority to maintain a safe environment. Without them, utter chaos is inevitable.

This is an exploratory study of two selected figure of speech: personification and hyperbole. They are, however, selected as key rhetoric devices that depict the poetic language and style. They are central figures of speech that are significant in the poetic sentences and semantic content. This study is guided by Formalism approach based on poetic sounds, syntactic and semantic construction. They are used to achieve a special meaning or effect in all modes of discourse. They are integral to the functioning of language in a connotative manner. These figures of speech extend the meaning of words or phrases beyond the normal way as a result of mental association. Their functions are for the emphasis on ironic effect and animation. The formalist approach is adopted because it helps the readers to analyse the writer’s technical prowess and craft skills. It believes that in any work of art such as poetry, the poetic sometimes deliberately defamiliarizes the raw material and objects of familiar actions and words that he uses to build up his poem.

This present study aims to examine whether or not DiTerlizzi’s novel entitled Kenny and the Dragon can be categorized as a children’s literature. The story speaks about an adventurous experience of a young rabbit called Kenny to discover the truth about his monstrous-looking friend, Grahame. This study applies formalism approach since it is the most suitable approach to study the intrinsic elements of the novel, which are the plot, character and characterization, and point of view. To support the analysis, library research was conducted alongside the novel itself and supporting articles from reliable websites. The result of the analysis shows that DiTerlizzi’s Kenny and the Dragon meets the requirements for children’s literature since the characteristics of children’s literature suggested by Nodelman are found in the novel.

Multibody systems are often modeled as interconnected multibody and modal components: multibody components, such as rigid bodies, beams, plates, and kinematic joints, are treated via multibody techniques whereas the modal components are handled via a modal reduction approach based on the small strain assumption. In this work, the problem is formulated within the framework of the motion formalism. The kinematic description involves simple, straightforward frame transformations and leads naturally to consistent deformation measures. Derivatives are expressed in local frames, which results in the remarkable property that the tangent matrices are independent of the position and orientation of the modal component with respect to an inertia frame. This implies a reduced level of geometric non-linearity as compared to standard description. In particular, geometrically non-linear problems can be solved with the tangent matrices of the reference configuration, without re-evaluation and re-factorization.

Pedagogical materials in teaching regional literature are needed in Philippine classrooms. However, the number of studies on regional literature that students and teachers can make use of is very limited. To cater to such academic demand, this study selected four folk songs of Southern Leyte, Philippines to determine the rural life imagery that they portray. The formalism approach in literary analysis was used in this study. The chosen folk songs were “AwitsaBukid” (Song of the Mountain), “Barutu” (Boat), “Alibangbang” (Butterfly), and “May BalayGamaysaBungtud” (There Was a Hut on the Hill).  The textual translation of the lyrics of the folk songs followed the Phonology-Orthography Correspondence: Sound-Letter System on pedagogic grammar for Cebuano Visayan. Coding and triangulation were applied to the data. The findings revealed that the selected folk songs of Southern Leyte had the following rural life imagery representations: “AwitsaBukid” (Song of the Mountain) - farmers working to attain a good harvest, “Barutu” (Boat) - a coffin made out of a sawed-off boat and funeral activities, “Alibangbang” (Butterfly) - a man courting and exploiting a woman then leaving her for another woman, “May BalayGamaysaBungtud” (There Was a Hut on the Hill) - a socialite mother living in a shanty on a hill. The literary analysis showed that the selected folk songs of Southern Leyte have representations of rural life imagery.
