PurposeSharing information about work processes has proven to be difficult. This applies especially to information shared from those who participate in a process to those who remain outsiders. The purpose of this article is to increase understanding of how professionals document their work practices with a focus on information making by analysing how archaeologists document their information work in archaeological reports.Design/methodology/approachIn total 47 Swedish archaeological reports published in 2018 were analysed using close reading and constant comparative categorisation.FindingsEven if explicit narratives of methods and work process have particular significance as documentation of information making, the evidence of information making is spread out all over the report document in (1) procedural narratives, (2) descriptions of methods and tools, (3) actors and actants, (4) photographs, (5) information sources, (6) diagrams and drawings and (7) outcomes. The usability of reports as conveyors of information on information making depends more on how a forthcoming reader can live with it as a whole rather than how to learn of the details it recites.Research limitations/implicationsThe study is based on a limited number of documents representing one country and one scholarly and professional field.Practical implicationsIncreased focus on the internal coherence of documentation and the complementarity of different types of descriptions could improve information sharing. Further, descriptions of concepts that refer to work activities and the situation when information came into being could similarly improve their usability.Originality/valueThere is little earlier research on how professionals and academics document and describe their information activities.

Abstract Beginning in 2018, TC Energy began an effort to digitize inspection and construction management and internally named this concept the Dynamic, Digital, Data and Diagnostics platform otherwise known as “4D Inspection”. The 4D Inspection platform is built upon Project Consulting Service’s Epilogue® energy infrastructure construction management solution and is intended to evolve inspection reporting to a digital platform to create standardized construction reporting embedded with real-time compliance validations for efficient and effective management of field construction issues, progress tracking, and over-all construction quality monitoring. Currently, this effort is nearing the end of its first year of a multi-year implementation plan, the platform is in use on projects in both Canada and the United States spanning four different time zones with more than 595 inspectors on over $7.5 billion in capital projects. Even with implementation still underway, this concept’s key functionality, like automated inspection report document control, simplified photo capture with geo-tagging and automated daily progress reporting, has provided immediate benefits of more thorough, more reliable, and more efficient construction data than ever gathered using previous data collection processes. With improved data accuracy and detail, TC Energy gains insight and even foresight into how best to advance construction quality and safety while also impacting overall project costs and schedule.

The research objective was to identify, analyze, and design a procurement information system that was developed by an IT consultant company for their client companies. Data collection techniques used were literature study, field study, document study, learning and trying the existing e-procurement system. Then, it was followed by analysis on general procurement processes using objectoriented analysis with Unified Modeling Language (UML) as tools. The result is a web-based e-procurement application that supports documentation and storage of transaction data. It also generates reports in accordance with company requirements. The main system features are Request Usage Form (RUF), Purchase Request (PR), Purchase Request Summary (PRS), Request for Quotation (RFQ), Quotation, Winner Selection (WS), Purchase Order (PO), and Receive Report (RR). It can be concluded that the developed system can support procurement processes effectively and efficiently, and integrate the inventory and approval system. Integration with inventory system will result in easier stock checking and automated update of goods data in the inventory system. It includes creating item, editing item, and receiving made report document. Integration with approval system will also result in the simpler process of documents approval in the e-procurement system.

Scientific and technical report is an important document type with high intelligence value. But the resource distribution of different carrier forms of scientific and technical report is not integrated and the resource description is not deeply and specific enough to the report document type, which influences the information searching accuracy and efficiency for users. Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR), an emerging model in the bibliographic domain, provides interesting possibilities in terms of cataloguing, representation and semantic enrichment of bibliographic data. This study employs the FRBR conceptual model and entity-relationship analysis method to design in-depth descriptive metadata schema of scientific and technical report by analyzing the entities and mapping the bibliographic attributes corresponding to the characteristics of report, which can help to integrating and disclosing scientific and technical report resources.
