Background:  It is the prime duty of transfusion services to provide safe, adequate and timely need of blood and the blood products. Understanding the reasons for donor deferral can help in planning more efficient recruitment strategies and educate and motivate temporarily deferred donors in order to maintain a safe and adequate supply of blood products. Aims of the Study: To evaluate and analyze the blood donor deferral pattern in a tertiary care hospital blood bank and to review its influence on blood safety. Methodology: This retrospective study was conducted in the blood bank, CHRI from the year January 2015 to December 2018. Data like demographic data, clinical history, physical examination, haematological examination, stored in the blood bank was retrived. The donors will be deferred based on standard WHO guidelines. The collected deferral data was analyzed using SPSS software 2011version 20. Results: During the study period there were 7010 registered blood donors. The deferral rate was 5.19%. Among the donor deferrals, females were more commonly deferred ie 31.66%. The deferral rate among voluntary and replacement donors are 4.71% and 11.62% respectively. The rate of permanent deferral (17.86%) was less compared to temporary deferral (82.14%). Among temporary deferral anaemia is the most common cause (27.75%). Seropositive for Hepatitis B is the most common cause for permenant deferral (52.30%). Conclusion: In our study temporary deferral is higher this necessities the need of education, motivation of these donors for future donation to maintain a healthy and safe donor pool.

Background: Single donor platelet (SDP) is one of the valuable component for thrombocytopenic patients for obtaining good post transfusion count increment, good yield of product is required. Proper donor selection has a crucial role in in safety and quality of product therefore proper screening of donor is mandatory. The aim was to find out reasons and frequency of plateletpheresis donor deferral and to encourage safety of donor for recruitment of new SDP donors. Methods: A retrospective analysis of data was done over a period of 1 year from June 2018 to May 2019 from the data centre of the institute. Results: Out of 1365 donors, 1200 were selected for plateletpheresis procedure and remaining 165 donors were deferred for various reasons. The predominant age of donors ranges from 25-35 years. Among the deferred donors temporary donors accounted for 93.33% and permanently deferred donors were 6.61. Most common cause for deferral were poor venous access 52 (31.51%). Low platelet counts 32 (19.39), low Hb 26 (15.75%), underweight 24 (14.54%), under medication 9 (5.45%), alcohol intake within 24 hours 6 (3.63%) and others like tattoos, infections/inflammations at phlebotomy sites 5 (3.03%) and most common reason for permanent deferral were sero-positivity for HbsAg 6 (3.63%), chronic diseases 4 (2.42%) (cardiovascular diseases bronchial asthma), others 1 (0.6%).Conclusions: For obtaining good yield of product, proper donor screening is required. Temporary deferred donors should be counselled properly and encouraged for further donation when comes under selection criteria. Donor selection criteria for apheresis may be revised.

Background: Our aim is to evaluate reasons of donor deferral in tertiary care hospital to nd new disease distribution, any areas of negligence in part of donor or history taking physicians and human errors which could be easily correctable and benecial for donors to remain healthy and provide safe blood. Methodology: This is a retrospective analytic study carried out during the period of January to December 2015 at Department of Transfusion Medicine, Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital. After preliminary registration, each donor was either selected or deferred by medical ofcers. The donor selection and deferral criteria were according to the standard operating procedure. Detailed information of reason of deferral was recorded. Results:Among 10056 registered donors, 9453 (94.004%) were eligible for donation and 603 (5.996%) blood donors were deferred due to various reasons. Male donors were 7526 (74.84%) more than female 2530 (25.16%). Females (60.03%) were found to have higher deferral rate than male population (39.97%). Low hemoglobin was found to be leading cause constituting 17.58% followed by hypertension 15.26%, medications 12.11% and underweight 11.28%. Conclusion: Deferral may discourage the donor for subsequent donations, especially young rst time donors. Deferred donors should be properly counseled and educated for probable future donations. By knowing the causes of deferral we can take further steps to prevent those causes and can preserve precious blood and blood components.

BACKGROUND: Safety of blood and blood products is a major problem all over the world screening for the markers of infectious diseases alone is an incomplete solution. One of the most important steps in improving the safety is donor selection donors who do not meet selection criteria are deferred either temporarily or permanently in view of both donor and recipient safety. AIMS: To analyse blood donor deferral pattern in our tertiary care blood center. Methods: Data of blood donor deferral were evaluated retrospectively from January 2020 to April 2021 in Department of Immunohematology and Blood Transfusion. Donor selection and deferral was done as per national guidelines. RESULTS: Out of 13042 blood donors came to donate in our blood bank 7.71% (1006) were deferred Out of 1006, 67.29% (677) were temporarily deferred whereas 32.70% (329) were permanently deferred. The deferral rate for females and males was 0.96 % (126) and 6.74% (880) respectively. The most common cause for deferral was due to low hemoglobin 25.70% (174) and followed by hypertensive donors 50.76% (167).Other causes for deferral was donor on medications 19.94%(135), failed phlebotomy 9.89%(66), low blood pressure 7.09%(48),tattoo 6.49% (44),skin lesions at phlebotomy site 5.31% (36), Major surgery 4.13%(28), vaccination 3.98% (27), cough and cold 3.54%(24), under weight 3.39% (23), Minor surgery 1.47% (10), Menstruation 1.47% (10), Typhoid 1.18% (08), underage 1.18% (08), High Risk Behavior 2.43% (08), Dengue 0.73%, Asthma 0.30%, Malaria 0.44%, Diarrhea 0.29%, smoking 0.14%, Abortion 0.14%. CONCLUSIONS: In this study temporary deferral was most common. Females were deferred more common than male. Most common deferral reason is low hemoglobin. Temporary differed donors require proper follow up and management so as not to lead diminished supply of future donors.

: Blood Transfusion Services is vital part of health care system which saves many lives annually across the globe. Shortage of blood donors is a problem faced by all the blood banks. Many donors are deferred either due to temporary or permanent causes which differ across the blood banks.: The study was carried out on 1646 donors which came to the blood bank.: Total 194 donors were deferred out of 1646 registered donors due to different reasons, anaemia followed by intake of medicines were found to be most common causes of deferral and males were deferred more as compared to the females.: The donor deferral rate in the present study was 11.78 with anaemia as the most common cause of deferral followed by intake of medicines. The temporarily deferred donors need to be closely followed up to ensure their contribution in the blood banks after the treatment of their causes.

Background: The prime responsibility of a Blood Transfusion Service is to provide a very safe, sufficient and timely supply of blood and its components to those in need. In fulfilling thisresponsibility, the Blood Transfusion Service should ensure that the act of blood donation is safe andcauses no harm to the donor. Aims and objectives: To estimate the incidence of pre-donationdeferral in a tertiary care institute and to estimate various factors for donor deferral. Material andmethodology: A retrospective analysis of donors data was collected from January 2019 toDecember 2019 from the donor deferral registry maintained in the blood bank. In this study, thesubjects who visited our blood bank or arrived at a voluntary blood donation camp for purpose ofdonating blood were screened by donor questionnaire and basic physical examination done withrecording vital signs(temperature, blood pressure, pulse rate) followed by hemoglobin estimationand blood grouping. Results: In the present study, 456 donors were deferred from donation. Thedeferral rate was 13.6%. Deferral rate was high among males. The majority of deferrals, weretemporary deferrals, 380(83.33%) and 76(16.66%) were permanent deferrals. Anemia was themost common cause among temporary deferrals constituting 56.05% of temporary deferrals and46.71% of total deferrals. Conclusion: Attempts should be made to create awareness amongpotential donors by conducting health talks, distributing educational pamphlets, counselling donorsduring donation and encouraging them for future donations.
