Surgical procedures frequently need blood transfusion. However, the blood demand is frequently excessive without an appropriateneed analysis. The high percentage of canceled and returned blood indicates the ineffective use of blood transfusion. To know theappropriateness of blood demand for surgery preparation at the Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo General Hospital the researchers analyzedhis matter. This study was an observational study with cross sectional approach. The data of the blood demand for surgery preparationwere obtained from the blood bank of the Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo General Hospital, Makassar during August up to November 2013.The data were grouped based on the number of blood demand and the quantity of canceled and returned blood, these were then analyzedby SPSS software. The total of samples which were identified was about 1599 with 3829 blood demands. The quantity of canceled bloodwas1915 and the returned blood was 730. The demand of blood products indicated that whole blood was 2340 (61.3%), PRC 1392(36.4%), platelets 83 (2.2%) and FFP 5 (0.1%). The highest blood demand was observed in the General Surgery Department 797(20.9%). The difference between blood demand and the returned blood quantity (for whole blood and PRC) was analyzed statisticallyand indicated a significant result (p=0.000), this meant that there was a mismatch between blood demand number and the returnedblood quantity. This matter could reflect the ineffective use of blood transfusion.

Malaria is one of the health problems in Indonesia, especially West Sumatra. Determination of the description of Malaria disease in an area is needed to determine the spread and severity of the disease. This study aims to determine the frequency distribution according to age, sex and place of residence, description of the types of Plasmodium causes of Malaria and hematological features in Malaria patients at Siti Rahmah Padang Hospital in 2018. This type of research is a descriptive observational study with an approach or design cross section (cross sectional). The frequency distribution of Malaria sufferers in Siti Rahmah Padang Hospital in 2018 according to the highest age was in the age group 21-30 years as many as 28 cases (36.8%), the highest sex among men was 46 (60.5%) and the highest number of residences was found in Koto Tangah sub-district there were 31 cases (40.8%). The type of Plasmodium found in Malaria cases in Siti Rahmah Padang Hospital in 2018 was P. vivax (73 cases (96.05%)) and P. falciparum (3 cases (3.95%)). The results of laboratory tests on Hb, hematocrit, platelet and leukocyte levels in Malaria positive patients in Siti Rahmah Padang Hospital in 2018 were in the normal range.

ObjectivesBlood transfusion is a life-saving procedure and is also associated with a range of risks including the occurrence of symptoms of acute transfusion reactions (ATRs). Very few studies in sub-Saharan Africa have reported on ATRs. The present study addresses this gap in the literature by documenting the prevalence of and factors associated with ATRs in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).DesignThis is a cross-sectional descriptive and analytical study using blood bank data from a general referral hospital.SettingCentre Hospitalier Mère-Enfant (CHME) Monkole, a general referral hospital in Kinshasa, DRC.ParticipantsGeneral population who have received blood transfusion in CHME Monkole between 2014 and 2019.ResultsThe data set included a total of 7166 patients; 3153 (44%) men and 4013 (56%) women. The overall prevalence of symptoms of ATRs was 2.6%; the lowest prevalence was in 2017 (2.34%) and highest in 2018 (2.95%) and 2019 (2.94%). The documented symptoms included 74 (39.6%) cases of dyspnoea/respiratory distress, 60 (32.1%) cases of fever, 36 (19.2%) cases of pruritus/urticaria and 17 (9.1%) cases of vomiting. None of the studied factors was associated with symptoms of ATRs.ConclusionSymptoms of ATRs were not uncommon in the studied population. Dyspnoea and respiratory distress, fever and pruritus/urticaria were the most common symptoms of ATRs. This study highlights the need for a clinical and biological surveillance to detect, prevent and manage ATRs in the context of the DRC.
