Ultra-broadband reflectionless Brewster absorber protected by reciprocity

The Brewster’s law predicts zero reflection of p-polarization on a dielectric surface at a particular angle. However, when loss is introduced into the permittivity of the dielectric, the Brewster condition breaks down and reflection unavoidably appears. In this work, we found an exception to this long-standing dilemma by creating a class of nonmagnetic anisotropic metamaterials, where anomalous Brewster effects with independently tunable absorption and refraction emerge. This loss-independent Brewster effect is bestowed by the extra degrees of freedoms introduced by anisotropy and strictly protected by the reciprocity principle. The bandwidth can cover an extremely wide spectrum from dc to optical frequencies. Two examples of reflectionless Brewster absorbers with different Brewster angles are both demonstrated to achieve large absorbance in a wide spectrum via microwave experiments. Our work extends the scope of Brewster effect to the horizon of nonmagnetic absorptive materials, which promises an unprecedented wide bandwidth for reflectionless absorption with high efficiency.

Tunable Split-Disk Metamaterial Absorber for Sensing Application

We present four designs of tunable split-disk metamaterial (SDM) absorbers. They consist of a bottom gold (Au) mirror layer anchored on Si substrate and a suspended-top SDM nanostructure with one, two, three, and four splits named SDM-1, SDM-2, SDM-3, and SDM-4, respectively. By tailoring the geometrical configurations, the four SDMs exhibit different tunable absorption resonances spanning from 1.5 µm to 5.0 µm wavelength range. The resonances of absorption spectra can be tuned in the range of 320 nm, and the absorption intensities become lower by increasing the gaps of the air insulator layer. To increase the sensitivity of the proposed devices, SDMs exhibit high sensitivities of 3312 nm/RIU (refractive index unit, RIU), 3362 nm/RIU, 3342 nm/RIU, and 3567 nm/RIU for SDM-1, SDM-2, SDM-3, and SDM-4, respectively. The highest correlation coefficient is 0.99999. This study paves the way to the possibility of optical gas sensors and biosensors with high sensitivity.

An Application of Multivariate Data Analysis to Photoacoustic Imaging for the Spectral Unmixing of Gold Nanorods in Biological Tissues

Gold nanorods (GNRs) showed to be a suitable contrast agent in photoacoustics (PA), and are able to provide a tunable absorption contrast against background tissue, while a detectable PA signal can be generated from highly localized and targeted areas. A crucial issue for these imaging techniques is represented by the discrimination between exogenous and endogenous contrast and the assessment of the real PA signal magnitude. The application of image resolution/unmixing methods was implemented and optimized to recover the relative magnitude spectra and distribution maps of image constituents of the biological sample based on multivariate analysis (multivariate curve resolution—alternating least squares, MCR-ALS) in the presence of GNRs with tunable absorption properties. The proposed data analysis methodology is demonstrated on real PA images from experimental animal models and ex-vivo preparations.
