Work procrastination is a retreat behavior associated with negative cognitive experience and it results in great losses to individual as well as organizational development. Understanding the antecedents of employees’ work procrastination behavior contributes to lower frequency of its occurrence. This research builds a dual-moderated mediation model from the perspective of cognitive appraisal theory and explored work procrastination behavior of employees subjected to abusive supervision. With 378 valid returned questionnaires, data collected from 32 companies in Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, and Chongqing supports our hypotheses. This result has enriched the understanding of work procrastination behavior and provided practical implications to avoide its negative effects.

In the Philosophical Investigation, Ludwig Wittgenstein suggested that emotion is nothing but behavioral expressions through an open-ended sequence of actions. Edmund Husserl made a claim in Logical Investigations saying that pure mathematics would be made a branch of psychology as mathematics, specifically adding, subtracting, dividing and multiplying, are just a result of mental processes. Combining the suggestion and claim made by these two philosophers and using information process theory, cognitive appraisal theory, behaviorism and number theory, this paper will argue that emotion is algorithmic by showing the computability of emotion and how the equation for emotion can follow a logical sequence of actions that ultimately determines a specific emotion.

Service failure is inevitable, leading to the provision of a recovery method by companies to overcome customer mistrust, that creates certain emotions. This research, therefore, aims to examine the indirect effect of customer emotion on trust and service recovery mediated by satisfaction. Data were obtained from 104 participants that read the vignette on service failure and recovery. This study used the data analysis of Process Hayes to measure the role of mediation. The result showed that customer satisfaction moderated the indirect effect between emotion and trust after service failure. In addition, cognitive appraisal theory supports the interactional and procedural process used to provide positive judgment. The implication of this study is useful for companies to minimize the possibility of service failure and provide recovery in order to maintain customer trust.

The marketing literature has demonstrated that political animosity influences consumers’ boycott intention. However, this question has rarely been examined in the hospitality setting. Thus, by utilizing cognitive appraisal theory and value-belief-norm theory, this study proposes a model to investigate the effect of animosity on ethnic dining behavior. To this end, this study examines the effect of animosity on switching intention by examining the structural relationships among anticipated negative emotions, personal norms, and switching intention. Study results demonstrate that individuals’ animosity beliefs influence their intention to switch to a different ethnic restaurant through anticipated negative emotions and personal norms. The current study’s findings provide ethnic restaurateurs with insights on how to revise marketing strategies when animosity is raised toward the origin country of which their ethnic cuisine is based on.

Americans say that reading, watching, or listening to the news is one of their leading causes of stress. And indeed, research has shown that negative news can negatively impact people’s attitudes, behaviors, and mental health. To combat the unwelcome effects of negative news, some have suggested that reporters practice more constructive or solution-oriented journalism by reporting stories that highlight societal progress. Drawing on cognitive appraisal theory and the broaden-and-build theory of positive emotions, this study tested the impact of constructive news. In a mixed-design quasi-experiment, participants received access to a Google Assistant feature in which they could prompt the assistant to summarize a constructive news story. After 2 weeks, those who used the feature were more likely, between pretest and posttest, than those who did not to feel positive while consuming traditional news, suggesting constructive news could mitigate the effects of more typical, negative news.

Purpose This study aims to examine distinct influences of two dimension job stress on job satisfaction and the moderating effects of guanxi-oriented attitude on the relationship between job stress and job satisfaction under cognitive appraisal theory and transactional theory. Design/methodology/approach In this study, surveys are conducted among state-owned younger bank employees. The author uses the scale of job challenge stress and hindrance stress developed among Chinese younger bank employees to measure the two dimension job stress. After demonstrating guanxi-relative concepts, the moderating effects of guanxi-oriented attitude are examined in this study. Findings The results demonstrate that guanxi-oriented attitude does not significantly moderate the influence of challenge stress on job satisfaction, while it significantly moderates the noxious influence of hindrance stress on job satisfaction. Theoretical contributions are also discussed. Originality/value First, this study suggests specific procedures to conduct hierarchical regression analysis and confirms the effects by parameters. It also proposes and summarizes specific procedures on how to calculate regression equations and draw regression lines to check the interaction received from the hierarchical regression analysis visually. Second, based on cognitive appraisal theory, guanxi-oriented attitude, a Chinese indigenous cognitive concept, was verified in this study. According to the importance of guanxi in Chinese society, the paper shows that employees who value guanxi more will buffer the noxious effects of job stress. Trainings and counseling should be designed to regulate the normal guanxi-oriented-related cognition.

There are four primary purposes of this chapter. First, the chapter presents a social cognitive model for the formulation of work passion, an operational definition, and its key components. Second, the chapter places the employee work passion appraisal (EWPA) model into perspective using the literature on work passion. Third, the chapter reviews the empirical research studies completed on the EWPA model since its inception. Fourth, the chapter suggests future directions for the research and application of the model. Using social cognitive appraisal theory as its origins, the EWPA model, composed of the components of cognition, affect, a sense of job well-being, and work intentions, will be defined and explored.

In this context of the recent political dispute between China and South Korea, this study examines the influence of the animosity of Chinese ethnic diners. By extending cognitive appraisal theory, this study develops an animosity model that links animosity beliefs, negative emotions, switching intentions, and the moderators of localization and corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices. The results show that animosity beliefs significantly affect switching intention both directly and indirectly through negative emotion. We also find that ethnic restaurants’ localization practices and CSR practices to support the local community alleviate the animosity effect on negative emotions associated with dining in an ethnic restaurant that has the cultural theme of the offending country. The results allow ethnic restaurateurs to gain insights into how to develop effective marketing strategies during crisis periods when animosity erupts against the country of origin of their ethnic cuisine.
