Supporting an adolescent who has an emotional or behavioural disorder is challenging for parents. This article reports the findings of a qualitative study of parents’ perceptions of stigma associated with parenting an adolescent with a diagnosis of ADHD or depression. 40 parents (28 mothers and 12 fathers) took part in semi-structured interviews. The interview guide focussed on their parenting experience in social contexts such as interactions with friends, family and the wider community, and perceptions of their own parenting abilities and experiences. Thematic analysis was used to code and interpret the data. Parents felt that other people held ill-informed or dismissive views of what their child’s disorder entailed; they experienced parental self-blame; they engaged in efforts to normalize their child’s experiences and they reported being selective in deciding whether to talk to others about their child’s diagnosis. The implications of the findings for addressing stigma are discussed.

ABSTRACT Inadequate nutrition during a critical period of development – as is the case during gestation and the first days of life, especially in very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) infants – can impact on neurodevelopment and favour comorbidities. In this study, we evaluate how neurodevelopment may be affected by intrauterine growth (IUGR) restriction and by an inadequate intake of nutritional energy during the early neonatal period. A longitudinal cohort study was conducted to analyse the nutritional contributions received during the first week of life, among a population of 396 VLBW infants. Motor, cognitive, sensory and behavioural development was assessed at 14, 25, 33 and 50 months. The association between IUGR, postnatal energy restriction and neurodevelopment was examined using multivariate logistic regression techniques. Mild cognitive delay was observed in 35.6% of neonates with IUGR and in 24% of those with appropriate birth weight. IUGR is associated with behavioural disorder (OR 2.60; 95% CI 1.25 - 5.40) and delayed cognitive development (OR 2.64; 95% CI 1.34 – 5.20). Energy restriction during the first week of life is associated with visual deficiency (OR 2.96; 95% CI 1.26 – 6.84) and cerebral palsy (OR 3.05; CI 95% 1.00 - 9.54). In VLBW infants, IUGR is associated with behavioural disorder, while postnatal energy restriction is significantly associated with motor disorder, infantile cerebral palsy and sensory disorder.

This chapter attempts to individually understand the concept of adolescence and ADHD before it combines to the understanding of the progression of ADHD as a neurodevelopmental and behavioural disorder moving through the lifespan in different formats/symptoms. This understanding would provide the clinicians and academicians clarity to follow the golden rule of ‘early diagnosis early intervention' by identifying the progressive nature in terms of genetic, biochemistry, psycho-social, and personality aspects maintaining the disorder. Finally, this chapter would also provide an overview about the possible interventions and treatment plans available and briefly discusses the recent issues and trends throughout the chapter.

Exposure to a traumatic event such as domestic violence has many negative consequences. The subject of this paper is the behaviour disorder of children as a consequence of domestic violence as a risk factor. The paper is based on a case study of the centre for social work. The case of domestic violence, identified consequences and actions undertaken by the center has been analysed. Along with a brief overview of the etiological explanation, the paper gives an overview of the connection between victimization of a child by domestic violence and the manifested behavioural disorder of a chuld. This is done on a concrete example of a family in which violence is present, which is witnessed by the child who shows behavioural disorder. The nalysis indicates violence as a risk factor for juvenile behaviour disorder and delinquency. Therefore, importance of a comprehensive approach within social protection and education systems to children with behavioural disorders is pointed out.
