Physicochemical Properties And Sensory Evaluation Of Fermented Mustard With Difference Ratio Of Rice Water And Tal Palm Sap

Tal palm plant is widely known and spread in Indonesia. However, the application of tal palm plant especially sap as another product is limited. Tal plant sap used in mustard fermentation as carbon source with rice water. The aim of this study is to find suitable ratio of rice water and tal palm sap for the best physicochemical properties and sensory characteristic of fermented mustard. This experiment was using completely randomized design with one factor and 5 treatment groups. The evaluation of physichochemical performed to measure total acidity, polyphenol, and flavonoid. The sensory evaluation was using hedonic test with untrained panelists and determine score for parameters such as color, aroma, texture, and taste. The results showed that the highest total acidity was 1,06% which found in sample with ratio of rice water and tal palm sap (0:1). However the highest total polyphenol was 15,87 (mg GAE/g) and total flavonoid was 4,52 (mg QE/g) found when the ratio of rice water and tal palm sap similar (1:1). Based on the sensory evaluation, sample with ratio of rice water and tal palm sap (3:1) has the highest score on color was 3,17 ; aroma was 3,00; and taste was 3,00. Accordingly, this study provide data to enhance economical value and product development for tal palm sap.

Azteca ants repair damage to their Cecropia host plants

Some Azteca ants are well-known symbionts that defend their Cecropia host plants against herbivory, although there is considerable variability in behavior among colonies, conditions, and species. In exchange, ants receive food, and also shelter within the plants’ internodes. Here we demonstrate that ants repair damage to the host plant when their brood is directly threatened. Using comminuted plant fibers and an unidentified binding liquid (probably plant sap) ants generally began patching holes in the tree trunk immediately, and significantly reduced the size of the hole 2.5 hours after it was created, and they generally completed the repairs within 24 hours.

Study on electric pulse destruction of diseased nematodes

The article presents the results of research on the use of electric discharges of current for the destruction of worms, larvae and galls of pathogenic nematodes. Nematodes consisting of round worms in the process of their vital activity penetrates the roots, stems and leaves of the plant, disrupting the integrity of tissues, cells and cellular structures, feeding on plant sap leads to lagging behind growth and development, contributes to the spread of various diseases, causes rot and infection. They can be found even in fruits and seeds of plants. Most often, worms form a kind of swelling growth in the roots, in the stems in the leaves and in the fruits, the growths of which are called galls. When unfavorable conditions arise, they move at an accelerated rate in the soil, maintaining their vitality. Therefore, their destruction using well-known methods such as agro technical, thermal biological, chemical, etc. is laborious and ineffective. The article describes an alternative electro technological method for the destruction of nematodes using electric current discharges, which provides the required destruction effect at the lowest cost.

Understanding the Plant Aphid Interaction: A Review

The interaction between plant-aphid is phenomenal and complex. Aphids possess efficient mouthparts which feed on plant sap intensively. Adaptation to host plants and successful feeding is achieved through the strategic ability of aphids to reproduce sexually and asexually (parthenogenesis). Aphid infestation damages the plant in diverse ways and induces plant defense. Though plant elicit direct and indirect defense to resist aphid feeding, the effectiveness of plant resistance depends largely on the aphid infestation rate and quality of the host plant. To control aphid infestation and plant damage, dependency on insecticides is undesirable due to insecticidal resistance of aphids and environmental pollution. Towards the identification of the scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha) of continental Africa: 1. Identification of the families

Scale insects (Hemiptera: Sternorrhyncha: Coccomorpha) are obligate plant parasites feeding on plant sap; some are damaging pests in agriculture, horticulture and forestry. Despite their economic importance, the scale insects found in continental Africa have not been extensively studied and the keys for identifying them are incomplete and scattered through the literature in several languages. The aim of this study is to improve our understanding of the African scale insect fauna. As a first step towards their identification, we provide a key to the 23 families currently known from continental Africa, based on slide-mounted adult females, covering Aclerdidae, Asterolecaniidae, Cerococcidae, Coccidae, Conchaspididae, Dactylopiidae, Diaspididae, Eriococcidae, Halimococcidae, Kermesidae, Kerriidae, Kuwaniidae, Lecanodiaspididae, Margarodidae, Matsucoccidae, Micrococcidae, Monophlebidae, Ortheziidae, Phoenicococcidae, Pseudococcidae, Putoidae, Rhizoecidae and Stictococcidae.

A dual endosymbiosis drives nutritional adaptation to hematophagy in the invasive tick Hyalomma marginatum

Many animals are dependent on microbial partners that provide essential nutrients lacking from their diet. Ticks, whose diet consists exclusively on vertebrate blood, rely on maternally inherited bacterial symbionts to supply B vitamins. While previously studied tick species consistently harbor a single lineage of those nutritional symbionts, we evidence here that the invasive tick Hyalomma marginatum harbors a unique dual-partner nutritional system between an ancestral symbiont, Francisella, and a more recently acquired symbiont, Midichloria. Using metagenomics, we show that Francisella exhibits extensive genome erosion that endangers the nutritional symbiotic interactions: Its genome includes folate and riboflavin biosynthesis pathways but deprived functional biotin biosynthesis on account of massive pseudogenization. Co-symbiosis compensates this deficiency since the Midichloria genome encompasses an intact biotin operon, which was primarily acquired via lateral gene transfer from unrelated intracellular bacteria commonly infecting arthropods. Thus, in H. marginatum, a mosaic of co-evolved symbionts incorporating gene combinations of distant phylogenetic origins emerged to prevent the collapse of an ancestral nutritional symbiosis. Such dual endosymbiosis was never reported in other blood feeders but was recently documented in agricultural pests feeding on plant sap, suggesting that it may be a key mechanism for advanced adaptation of arthropods to specialized diets.

Transitional genomes and nutritional role reversals identified for dual symbionts of adelgids (Aphidoidea: Adelgidae)

Many plant-sap-feeding insects have maintained a single, obligate, nutritional symbiont over the long history of their lineage. This senior symbiont may be joined by one or more junior symbionts that compensate for gaps in function incurred through genome-degradative forces. Adelgids are sap-sucking insects that feed solely on conifer trees and follow complex life cycles in which the diet fluctuates in nutrient levels. Adelgids are unusual in that both senior and junior symbionts appear to have been replaced repeatedly over their evolutionary history. Genomes can provide clues to understanding symbiont replacements, but only the dual symbionts of hemlock adelgids have been examined thus far. Here, we sequence and compare genomes of four additional dual-symbiont pairs in adelgids. We show that these symbionts are nutritional partners originating from diverse bacterial lineages and exhibiting wide variation in general genome characteristics. Although dual symbionts cooperate to produce nutrients, the balance of contributions varies widely across pairs, and total genome contents reflect a range of ages and degrees of degradation. Most symbionts appear to be in transitional states of genome reduction. Our findings support a hypothesis of periodic symbiont turnover driven by fluctuating selection for nutritional provisioning related to gains and losses of complex life cycles in their hosts.

Efektivitas getah batang betadine (Jatropha multifida L.) terhadap penyembuhan luka pasca pencabutan gigi pada tikus Sprague-DawleyEffectiveness of betadine (Jatropha multifida L.) stem sap on the wound healing after tooth extraction in Sprague-Dawley rats

Pendahuluan: Pencabutan gigi merupakan prosedur yang sering dilakukan di kedokteran gigi. Setelah pencabutan gigi akan dihasilkan suatu perlukaan. Proses penyembuhan luka dapat dipercepat pada kondisi tertentu. Salah satu bahan alami yang dapat membantu proses penyembuhan luka adalah getah tanaman betadine (Jatropha multifida L.). Penelitian bertujuan untuk menganalisis efektivitas getah tanaman betadine terhadap penyembuhan luka dan terhadap tanda-tanda infeksi pasca pencabutan gigi Metode: Desain penelitian studi eksperimental laboratorium dengan rancangan penelitian post-test only control group design menggunakan 30 ekor tikus Sprague-Dawley. Teknik pengambilan sampel yaitu convenience sampling. Sampel dibagi menjadi 2 kelompok yaitu kelompok perlakuan dan kelompok kontrol. Kelompok perlakuan diberikan getah tanaman betadine dan kelompok kontrol diberikan asam traneksamat secara oral menggunakan sonde lambung. Tunggu selama 4 jam setelah pemberian getah tanaman betadine dan asam traneksamat. Anestesi pada tikus menggunakan ketamin 50 mg/kg berat badan secara intramuskular kemudian dilakukan pencabutan pada gigi tikus. Pengamatan dilakukan dengan melihat kriteria klinis pada hari 1,3,7 dan diperhatikan sampai luka sembuh serta lihat tanda-tanda infeksi. Analisis data dilakukan dengan uji normalitasShapiro Wilik. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa data berdistribusi tidak normal. Analisis data dilanjutkan menggunakan uji statistik mann whitney. Hasil: Terdapat perbedaan signifikan penyembuhan luka soket pasca pencabutan gigi setelah diberikan getah betadine dan asam traneksamat dengan nilai p=0,037 (p<0,005). Simpulan: Pemberian getah tanaman betadine terbukti lebih efektif terhadap proses penyembuhan luka soket pasca pencabutan gigi dibandingkan dengan pemberian asam traneksamat. Tooth extraction will always cause injuries. However, the wound healing process can be accelerated under certain conditions. One of the natural ingredients that can accelerate the wound healing process is betadine (Jatropha multifida L.) plant sap. The study was aimed to analyzed the effect of betadine plant sap on wound healing and signs of infection after tooth extraction. Methods: Experimental laboratory study design with post-test only control group design was conducted towards 30 Sprague-Dawley rats. The sampling technique was convenience sampling. The sample was divided into two groups, the treatment group and the control group. The treatment group was administered with betadine plant sap, and the control group was administered with tranexamic acid orally using a gastric probe, then waited 4 hours after. The anaesthesia was then performed using 50 mg/kg body weight of ketamine intramuscularly. The extraction was performed after. Observations was conducted at the clinical criteria on days 1, 3, and 7 and continue to be monitored until the wound heals. Then, the signs of infection were observed. Data analysis was carried out using the Shapiro Wilk normality test. The results showed that the data was not normally distributed. Thus, data analysis was continued using the Mann Whitney statistical test. Results: The results showed a significant difference in the healing of socket wounds after tooth extraction after being administered with betadine sap and tranexamic acid with a value of p=0.037 (p<0.005). Conclusions: Administration of betadine plant sap is proven to be more effective in accelerating the healing process of socket wounds after tooth extraction than tranexamic acid. Functional Morphology of Gustatory Organs in Caterpillars

The sense of taste plays a pivotal role in the behavior of insects. Caterpillars depend largely on taste cues from plants to detect and locate food sources. Taste stimuli can be either simple or complex as multimolecular mixtures. The insect faces the task of deciphering the nature of these tastants and must then make appropriate feeding choices. Typically, caterpillar larvae possess four types of bilateral gustatory sensilla on their mouthparts. The lateral and medial styloconic sensilla are thought to be the primary organs involved in feeding. These sensilla are in continuous contact with plant sap during feeding and can detect different phytochemicals present in the plant. The gustatory sensory input is encoded as patterns of nerve impulses by gustatory receptor cells housed in these sensilla. Therefore, these gustatory receptor cells form the first layer of a decision-making process that ultimately determines whether food is accepted or rejected by the insect. Caterpillars, such as gypsy moth larvae (Lymantria dispar) (L.) (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) are major forest pests in most of the United States. These larvae are highly polyphagous feeders and defoliate a variety of tree species, including forest, shade, fruit, and ornamentals. This chapter discusses morphological, feeding behavioral, and electrophysiological aspects of gustatory sensilla with respect to gypsy moth caterpillars.
