Infections of the uvula are infrequently recognized and have been previously described only in association with group A streptococcal pharyngitis or Haemophilus influenzae type b epiglottitis. Three cases of H influenzae type b bacteremic uvulitis are described. In suspected cases of H influenzae type b uvulitis, a lateral neck radiograph should be performed and parenteral antibiotics initiated.

The etiology, clinical presentation, and therapeutic strategies associated with membranous laryngotracheobronchitis are discussed. A case is presented in which a lateral neck radiograph gave the preliminary impression of a tracheal foreign body. Endoscopic examination of the upper airway revealed the correct diagnosis of acute membranous laryngotracheobronchitis. Comparison with the more commonly occurring viral laryngotracheobronchitis is made.
