Simultaneous selection on vegetative and reproductive phenology in a perennial herb

The timing of different life history events are often correlated, and selection might only rarely be exerted independently on the timing of a single event. In plants, phenotypic selection has often been shown to favour earlier flowering. However, little is known about to what extent this selection acts directly vs. indirectly via vegetative phenology, and if selection on the two traits is correlational. We estimated direct, indirect and correlational phenotypic selection on vegetative and reproductive phenology over three years for the perennial herb Lathyrus vernus. Direct selection favoured earlier flowering and shorter timespans between leaf-out and flowering in all years. However, early flowering was associated with early leaf-out, and the direction of selection on leaf-out day varied among years. As a result, selection on leaf-out weakened selection for early flowering in one of the study years. We found no evidence of correlational selection. Our results highlight the importance of including temporally correlated traits when exploring selection on the phenology of seasonal events.

Spring flora of Lutsk and Partisan forestry of Kivertsiv National Natural Park "Tsumanska Puscha"

In the frame of identification of the Ukrainian Polissya rare vegetation the most attention is paid to the boreal species and groups. Deciduous forests with sinuses of spring ephemeroids remain unstudied in Polissya that's why the urgency of their research in the forests of Volyn Polissya is important, especially in the Kivertsy National Nature Park "Tsumanska Pushcha". The research of the spring ephemeroids composition and rare plant species identification on the territory of the plots of "Volyn Military Forestry" and "Tsumanske Forestry" within the Kivertsy National Nature Park "Tsumanska Pushcha" were aim of the study. At the beginning of the 2021 vegetation period 16 spring ephemeroids were found in 38 parcel of Lutsk forestry and 41 parcel of the Partisan Forestry (both belong to the Kivertsy NPP "Tsumanska Pushcha") by the employees of the NPP together with the scientists of Volyn National University named after Lesya Ukrainka. There were identified Adoxa moschatellina L., Allium ursinum L., Anemone nemorosa L., A. ranunculoides L., Corydalis cava Schweigg. et. Korte., C. solida (L.) Clairv., Dentaria glandulosa Waldst. & Kit., Ficaria verna Huds., Hepatica nobilis Mill., Isopyrum thalictroides L., Lathraea squamaria L., Lathyrus vernus (L.) Bernh., Mercurialis perennis L., Primula veris L., Pulmonaria obscura Dumort., Ranunculus cassubicus L. The monitoring research was set for populations of Allium ursinum (Ukrainian Red Data Book) and regional rare species in Volyn Region: Corydalis cava, Dentaria glandulosa, Hepatica nobilis, Isopyrum thalictroides, Hepatica nobilis (spring ephemeroids), Vinca minor (spring-flowering species) and Hedera helix (wintergreen species). The studied ephemeroid plants amount 2.52 % of the total number of vascular plants of Tsumanska Pushcha and 1.14 % of the flora of Volyn Polissya. According to the results of monitoring studies for Allium ursinum, the coenopopulation of the species generally has a left-handed spectrum, remains homeostatic, and the number of individuals is maintained by seed and vegetative propagation. Creation of the ecological trail "Spring-flowering plants of Kivertsy NPP "Tsumanska Pushcha" is proposed.

Regularities of the genotype’s distribution of phylogenetically homogenous bacteria Rhizobium leguminosarum in the nodules of separate populations of Lathyrus vernus (spring pea) plants

The genotypes of phylogenetically homogeneous Rhizobium leguminosarum bacterial strains in nodules of Lathyrus vernus plants were studied. The degree of genetic variation between bacteria within nodules of one L. vernus population correlated with the distance between host plants: the greater the distance, the greater the genetic differences between their microsymbionts. This may be due to the ongoing process of exchanging genetic information between Rhizobium strains, with the depends on the distance between them. But in some cases, this pattern was not observed, and there were significant differences between the microsymbionts of neighboring plants. Most likely, with the exception of spatial limitations, there are some other barriers that exist to the free exchange of genetic information between nodule bacteria.

Communities of broadleaved woodlands of the lower part of the forest belt of the Belaya river basin (North-Western Caucasus)

The study of phytocoenotic diversity of oak and oak-hornbeam forests of the lower part of the forest belt in the Belaya river basin (Western Caucasus) was performed using the Braun-Blanquet approach. Five floristically different groups of releves were identified based on quantitative classification (Ward's method, Jaccard Distance Measure). An association rank was established for each group. According to the results of comparative syntaxonomic analysis, three associations of moderately masic oak and oak-hornbeam forests - Geranio sanguinei-Quercetum petraeae ass. nova hoc loco (diagnostic species: Pinus sylvestris, Calamagrostis arundinacea, Rhododendron luteum, Geranium sanguineum, Vaccinium arctostaphylos), Inulo salicinae-Quercetum petraeae ass. nova hoc loco (diagnostic species: Brachypodium pinnatum, Inula salicina, Dorycnium graecum, Laser trilobum, Trifolium medium, Viola alba, Stachys officinalis, Pyrethrum poteriifolium, Phleum phleoides, Teucrium chamaedrys, Genista patula) and Acero tatarici-Carpinetum betuli ass. nova hoc loco (diagnostic species: Phalacroloma annuum, Thalictrum minus, Torilis japonica, Prunus divaricata, Physalis alkekengi, Lamium maculatum, Acer tataricum) were included in the alliance Crataego-Carpinion Passarge 1981, order Lathyro-Carpinetalia Passarge 1981, class Carpino-Fagetea Jakucs et Passarge 1968. The correct syntaxonomic position of two associations of mesic hornbeam and oak-hornbeam forests - Dryopterido filicis-maris-Carpinetum betuli ass. nova hoc loco (diagnostic species: Dryopteris filix-mas, Circaea lutetiana, Aegopodium podagraria, Paris incompleta, Abies nordmanniana, Impatiens noli-tangere, Festuca gigantean, Symphytum grandiflorum, Dipsacus pilosus, Aconitum orientale, Asperula caucasica, Moehringia trinervia, Polygonatum orientale) and Vincetoxico scandentis-Carpinetum betuli ass. nova hoc loco (diagnostic species: Viola hirta, Vincetoxicum scandens, Ligustrum vulgare, Lathyrus vernus, Polygonatum multiflorum, Rubus caucasicus, Euphorbia squamosa) has not been determined, however their relations to beech and beech-hornbeam forests of the order Rhododendro-Fagetalia orientalis Passarge 1981 were noted. The described associations of oak-hornbeam forests correspond to the regional ecological series of communities along the moisture gradient.

ECOLOGY OF CYPRIPEDIUM CALCEOLUS L. (ORCHIDACEAE) IN KIROV REGION

The object of our research was one of the most common orchids in the world – Cypripedium calceolus L. As a rare species, it is listed in the Red book of the Russian Federation (3 category of rarity) [8], the Kirov region (3 category of rarity) [9], as well as in the Red books of 59 regions of the Russian Federation [2]. Limiting factors in the Kirov region are the violation of habitats as a result of anthropogenic impacts – deforestation, recreation, collection for bouquets, digging, reducing the number of species. Studies on the study of C. calceolus in the Kirov region are isolated [10–12]. The purpose of this work is to identify phytocenotic parameters and environmental conditions of C. calceolus habitats within the southern taiga fragment of the range. Studies of ecological and cenotic conditions of C. calceolus habitats were conducted in southern taiga forest ecosystems within the Kirov region (Slobodskaya, Afanasyevsky districts) (See table 1) in the period from 2012 to 2019. The studied habitats of C. calceolus are confined to non-morally-boreal-small-grass and grass spruce forests (Melico nutantis-Piceetum abietis subass. typicum, Maianthemo-Piceetum subass. typicum var. typical) (See fig. 1), pine trees with fir and spruce of various grasses (Melico nutantis-Pinetum sylvestris var. Lathyrus vernus). The growth of C. calceolus on the technogenically disturbed substrate of an old spent limestone quarry overgrown with coniferous rocks and various grasses was also noted. All the studied biotopes are characterized by a large constancy of non-moral species with not significant coverage of mosses. The stand of spruce forest types is dominated by Picea abies, pine-Pinus sylvestris. Abies sibirica occurs as an impurity. The undergrowth layer has a diverse species composition: Sorbus aucuparia, Frangula alnus, Lonicera xylosteum, Yuniperus communis, Daphne mezereum. In this tier of most studied phytocenoses there is a Atragene sibirica. The grass-shrub layer is also very diverse, which determines the high specificity of these communities. In addition to species of boreal small grass (Maianthemum bifolium, Orthilia secunda, Luzula pilosa, Rubus saxatilis), the presence of non – morals is characteristic-Lathyrus vernus, Melica nutans, Stellaria holostea, Asarum europaeum. Moss-lichen layer is fragmentary (covering up to 45 %), Pleurozium schreberi and Hylocomium splendens act as sodominants. Phyto-indication of the studied C. calceolus habitats according to ten ecological scales of D. N. Tsyganov (See table 2, Fig. 2) showed that in relation to the complex of all environmental factors, the studied species is mesovalent (MV) (It total = 0.54) and has an average level of lability in relation to the studied environmental factors. In relation to the complex of all environmental factors, C. calceolus is a mesobiont species. On a scale of soil acidity, the species is semistarvation at termokhimicheskie and apolitically scale and dial illumination-shading – metavalent on the scale of the wealth of the soil nitrogen – hemimillennial at createmotions scale and the scale of continentality of the climate avivamento. Only on the scale of soil moisture and the scale of soil salt regime, C. calceolus is stenovalent, which indicates a very limited range of possible habitats for this factor. The species, in the studied habitats, realizes from 4.61 to 23.84 % of its potential according to the studied factors. For C. calceolus, the results obtained allow us to extend the scale of soil acidity by 0.75 degrees to the right. According to the other scales, the values of the ecological space of the studied CP are placed in the ranges given by D. N. Tsyganov for this type Edaphic conditions of C. calceolus on the scale of soil moisture correspond to regimes from dry-saline to wet-forest-saline; on the factor of soil salt regime-poor soils; soil acidity – acidic-slightly acidic soils; soil richness in nitrogen – nitrogen – poor soils; moisture variability-soils with relatively stable and poorly variable moisture.

A Kerka-vidék gyertyános-tölgyesei

In this study, the phytosociological characteristics of oak-hornbeam forests in the Kerka valley, sW Hungary are summarized using 50 vegetation samples. These forests grow on alluvial soils affected by high groundwater table, and thus are best regarded as extrazonal communities exhibiting some characteristics of hardwood gallery forests. The high number of submontane elements are particularly typical of them: Aco-nitum vulparia,Adoxa moschatellina, Anemone nemorosa, Anemone ranunculoides, Asarum europaeum, Athyrium filix-femina, Cardamine bulbifera, Cerastium sylvaticum, Coryda-lis cava, Coridalis solida, Euphorbia amygdaloides, Gagea spathacea, Galanthus nivalis, Galeobdolon luteum, Isopyrum thalictroides, Knautia drymeia, Lathyrus vernus, Leucojum vernum, Lilium martagon, Luzula pilosa, Maianthemum bifo-lium, Mercurialis perennis, Milium effusum, Oxalis acetosella, Paris quadrifolia, Pulmonaria officinalis, Ranunculus lanugi-nosus, Sanicula europaea, Scilla drunensis, Stellaria holos-tea, Veronica montana, etc. The high frequency of Fritillaria meleagris is particularly noteworthy. These plants are likely to be relics of the cooler and wetter, and less extreme Beech I. phase of the Holocene. The occurrence of some sub-Med-iterranean species (Carex strigosa, Helleborus dumetorum, Knautia drymeia, Vicia oroboides) suggests some degree of relatedness to the oak-hornbeam forests in the zala Hills (Helleboro dumetorum-Carpinetum). The studied woods are sharply separated from the oak-hornbeam forests of Western Transdanubia (Cyclamini-Carpinetum), and exhibit relatively closer similarity to the oak-hornbeam forests of the Mura and Drava floodplains and the Raba River valley (Veronico montanae-Carpinetum). syntaxonomically, they are best identified with the latter under the name Veronico montanae-Carpinetum scilletosum drunensis.

Живий надґрунтовий покрив у природних дубових насадженнях південно-східного Лісостепу України

Для вікового ряду природних дубових насаджень насіннєвого походження, що ростуть у свіжій та вологій ясенево-липовій діброві в межах південно-східного Лісостепу України (ДП «Скрипаївське НДЛГ»), визначено видовий склад, біомасу, вологість основних видів живого надґрунтового покриву та рівномірність його розповсюдження по площі. Виявлено, що найбільш розвиненим був живий надґрунтовий покрив під наметом низькоповнотного (0,65) 157-річного дубового насадження, а найменш розвиненим – під наметом високоповнотного (0,90) середньовікового насадження. У дубових насадженнях різного віку свіжої ясенево-липової діброви в складі живого надґрунтового покриву переважає осока волосиста (Carex pilosa Scop.). До числа характерних видів також належать зірочник ланцетолистий (Stellaria holostea L.), куцоніжка лісова (Brachypodium sylvatica (Huds) Beauv.), чина весняна (Lathyrus vernus L.) та будра плющевидна (Glechoma hederacea L.). У дубових насадженнях вологої ясенево-липової діброви біомаса осоки волосистої в 194-річному насадженні є в 1,3 разу вищою, ніж у 79-річному насадженні. Під наметом дубових насаджень вологої ясенево-липової діброви загальне проективне покриття трав’яним ярусом становить 30–40 % з переважанням у складі осоки волосистої, яглиці звичайної (Aegopodium podagraria L.), копитняка європейського (Asarum europaeum L.) та купини духмяної (Polygonatum odoratum L.).

ALLIUM TEST AS A METHOD OF RESEARCHING ANTHROPOGENOUS LOAD

In the course ofstudy of anthropogenous load upon theterritories located in the immediate vicinity of the construction site of a large petrochemical complex "ZapSibNeftekhim", LLC there were found common species for all territories: Achillea millefolium L., Aconitum septentrionale Koelle, Aegopodium podagraria L., Alchemilla sp ., Angelica sylvestris L., Calamagrostis arundinacea (L.) Roth, Carex acutiformis Ehrh., Carex macroura Meinsh., Carex sp ., Crepis sibirica L., Dryopteris carthusiana (Vill.) H. P. Fuchs, Equisetum sylvaticum L., Filipendula vulgaris Moench., Fragaria vesca L., Galium mollugo L., Geranium sylvaticum L., Hypericum maculatum Crantz, Lathyrus vernus (L.) Bernh., Lysimachia vulgaris L., Luzula pilosa (L.) Willd., Orthilia secunda (L.) House, Paris quadrifolia L. To determine the toxic effects of environmental contaminants on living objects there was used Allium test. Using plant concentrates of Achilléa millefólium L. (1), Calamagrostis arundinacea L. Roth. (2), Filipendula vulgaris Moench. (3) growing on monitoring sitesthere was determined the frequency of anomalies in mitosis of root meristems of onions ( Allium cepa L.) which is sensitive to increased impact of anthropogenous pollutants. An increase in mutagenic mitoses was recorded in stressful anthropogenic conditions: 29.88-31.20% (1); 21.91-24.80% (2); 30.46-47.66% (3). Analysis of the results determines the system of measures needed to improve the sustainability of plant communities. The overall effect quantitatively can be determined by measuring the inhibition of growth in the developing root system, and counting and studying the chromosomes of some cells of the root system can indicate possible mutagenic changes.
