A high titania slag that is used as a feedstock for TiO2 manufacturing is obtained by ilmenite smelting (FeO.TiO2). The composition of the slag obtained by smelting is dependent on the composition of the mineral used for slag preparation, i.e., ilmenite in our study. At the laboratory scale, ilmenite slags are mostly obtained by using ilmenite as the raw material. An easy and simple way would be to prepare the synthetic slag using the individual components and heating them to high temperature in a furnace. The titania slag has a high oxidizing nature and requires an inert atmosphere to prevent oxidation of the slag as well as the molybdenum crucible. This paper describes the preparation of synthetic ilmenite slag using an induction furnace and the study of the composition and the phases formed in the slag. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) were used as analytical techniques for studying the slag. A comparison between obtained synthetic slag and industrial ilmenite slag was performed to test the possibility of preparing slags in the laboratory as per the required composition. The slags show similar phase formation as obtained in industrial ilmenite slags, which means that the synthetic slags are identical to the industrial slags.

Comprehensive utilization of stainless-steel slag (SSS) is restrained due to the risk of Cr6+ leaching. Based on the studying the microstructure of synthetic slag (SS) containing Cr2O3with XRD, SEM-EDS?and Image pro, the effect of binary basicity on the chromium occurrence in SSS was investigated. The results indicated that the binary basicity had a significant impact on the properties of spinel crystals. There was a positive correlation between the calcium content in spinel crystals and the SS basicity. The size of spinel crystals varied from large to small and the precipitation occurrence changed with the basicity increase. Furthermore, the chromium occurrences changed with basicity. The chromium was produced in spinel crystals at lower basicity, but as the basicity increased to 3.0, the chromium precipitated as calcium chromate. In view of the relationship between the chromium leaching behavior and its occurrence, increasing basicity raised the Cr6+ leaching.

Herein, a novel method for energy recovery from molten synthetic slags is analyzed. In this work, the potential energy that could be recovered from the production of synthetic slag is estimated by means of an integrated experimental–theoretical study. The energy to be recovered comes from the cooling–solidification stage of the synthetic slag manufacturing. Traditionally, the solidification stage has been carried out through quick cooling with water, which does not allow the energy recovery. In this paper, a novel cooling method based on metal spheres is presented, which allows the energy recovery from the molten slags. Two points present novelty in this work: (1) the method for measuring the metal spheres temperature (2) and the estimation of the energy that could be recovered from these systems in slag manufacturing. The results forecasted that the temperature achieved by the metal spheres was in the range of 295–410 °C in the center and 302–482 °C on the surface. Furthermore, we estimated that 325–550 kJ/kg of molten material could be recovered, of which 15% of the energy consumption is in the synthetic slag manufacturing process. Overall, the results obtained confirmed the potential of our proposal for energy recovery from the cooling–solidification stage of synthetic slag manufacturing.
