We studied the energy transfer between light beams on the director grating in a hybrid photorefractive liquid crystal (LC) cell assuming the propagation of light waves in the cell to be in the Mauguin regime. This approach makes it possible to trace the change of the gain coefficient dependence on the director grating spacing with the change of the LC director twist. Conditions for the LC flexoelectric parameters and the director helix pitch necessary for transformation the gain coefficient dependence from the nematic to cholesteric type are obtained. The influence of the director splay and bend deformations on the gain coefficient is also studied.

We investigate the applicability of polymer-ionic liquid composites as optical elements for light, as well as for slow neutrons. The gratings are recorded using two-beam mixing and are characterized experimentally based on their diffraction properties. We produced a set of samples differing in their thickness, ranging from 10 m – 100 m . We demonstrate that it is possible to prepare transmission gratings with a lattice constant of Λ = 480 n m , resulting in thick gratings for light, as well as neutrons. The presented samples show low optical losses in the Vis-UV spectrum and exhibit refractive index modulations of about 10 - 3 at λ = 543 n m . However, further improvements have to be made to obtain efficient neutron optical components.

We have presented a derivation of the asymptotic equations for transverse magnetic multiple scattering coefficients of an infinite grating of penetrable circular cylinders for obliquely incident plane electromagnetic waves. We have first deducted an “Ansatz” delineating the asymptotic behavior of the transverse magnetic multiple scattering coefficients associated with the most generalized condition of oblique incidence (Kavaklıoğlu, 2000) by exploiting Schlömilch series corresponding to the special circumstance that the grating spacing is much smaller than the wavelength of the incident electromagnetic radiation. The validity of the asymptotic equations for the aforementioned scattering coefficients has been verified by collating them with the Twersky's asymptotic equations at normal incidence. Besides, we have deduced the consequences that the asymptotic forms of the equations at oblique incidence acquired in this paper reduce to Twersky's asymptotic forms at normal incidence by expanding the generalized scattering coefficients at oblique incidence into an asymptotic series as a function of the ratio of the cylinder radius to the grating spacing.
