AbstractIf X is a connected complex manifold with dX = 2 that admits a (connected) Lie group G acting transitively as a group of holomorphic transformations, then the action extends to an action of the complexification Ĝ of G on X except when either the unit disk in the complex plane or a strictly pseudoconcave homogeneous complex manifold is the base or fiber of some homogeneous fibration of X.

For homogeneous spaces of a (real) Lie group one of the fundamental results concerning ends (in the sense of Freudenthal [8] ) is due to A. Borel [6]. He showed that if X = G/H is the homogeneous space of a connected Lie group G by a closed connected subgroup H, then X has at most two ends. And if X does have two ends, then it is diffeomorphic to the product of R with the orbit of a maximal compact subgroup of G.In the setting of homogeneous complex manifolds the basic idea should be to find conditions which imply that the space has at most two ends and then, when the space has exactly two ends, to display the ends via bundles involving C* and compact homogeneous complex manifolds. An analytic condition which ensures that a homogeneous complex manifold X has at most two ends is that X have non-constant holomorphic functions and the structure of such a space with exactly two ends is determined, namely, it fibers over an affine homogeneous cone with its vertex removed with the fiber being compact [9], [13].

AbstractGiven any homogeneous complex manifold X = G/H, there exists a natural coset map π :G/H → G/K satisfying π (X1) = π (x2) if and only if dx(x1 x2) = 0, where dx denotes the Kobayashi pseudometric on X. Its typical fiber Z : = K/H is a connected complex submanifold of X. Also G/K has a (7-invariant complex structure, provided K satisfies a certain technical assumption (see Theorem 3). If Z is compact as well, then G/K is biholomorphic to a homogeneous bounded domain.

Let X be a compact connected homogeneous complex manifold, which is Kāhlerian and has the second Betti number equal to one: b2(X) = 1; dimcX ≥ 3.It is known that these conditions imply the following: X is a projective-rational homogeneous manifold (see (3)); X has an ‘algebraic cell-decomposition’: the 2s-dimensional closed cells are s-dimensional irreducible algebraic sets in X and they form a basis for the 2s-homology group of X, s = 1, 2, …, dimcX (see (1)); there are no holomorphic maps of X on lower dimensional (normal) analytic spaces except constants (see (9)).

A compact simply connected homogeneous complex manifold is called a C-space. A C-space is said to be kählerian if it carries a Kähler metric. It is known (Matsushima [7]) that a kählerian C-space has always an Einstein Kähler metric which is essentially unique.

Topology of positively curved compact Kähler manifolds had been studied by several authors (cf. [6; 2]); these manifolds are simply connected and their second Betti number is one [1]. We will restrict ourselves to the study of some compact homogeneous Kähler manifolds. The aim of this paper is to supplement some results in [9]. We prove, among other results, that a compact, simply connected homogeneous complex manifold whose Euler number is a prime p ≥ 2 is isomorphic to the complex projective space Pp-1 (C); in the p-1 case of surfaces, we prove that a compact, simply connected, homogeneous almost complex surface with Euler-Poincaré characteristic positive, is hermitian symmetric.
