Pinus mugo shrubs on peat bogs in the Tatra National Park

Pinus mugo shrubs on peat bogs in the Tatra National Park (TNP) were for the first time described as a separated plant association by Obidowicz (1975) from only two mires. Since then, there have been no studies on peat bogs in the TNP and they have not been mentioned in the list of vegetation types of the Park. The research regarding the dwarf pine shrubs on mires in the Tatra Mountains was carried out in 2019. We mapped all patches of such vegetation (total – ~2 ha) on which we made 26 relevés. P. mugo shrubs on peat bogs occur within the complex of mire habitats, such as Norway spruce bog woodlands, raised bogs and poor fens. The shrub layer is dominated by Pinus mugo with admixture of dwarfish Picea abies. Typical plants of the herb layer are Vaccinium myrtillus, V. vitis-idaea, Eriophorum vaginatum and Oxycoccus palustris, whereas the most common mosses are Sphagnum magellanicum, S. capillifolium, S. russowi, Pleurozium schreberi. P. mugo shrubs on peat bogs in the TNP belong to the association Sphagno magellanici-Pinetum mugo.

History of the flora studied on water bodies and wetlands in eastern part of the Dnieper-Donetsk basin (Part 1. 18–19 centuries)

The paper deals with the history of studies of the Dniepr-Donets valley aquatic and wetland flora. This article covers the period of 18 and 19 centuries. According to the results of the study , the first reliable data about aquatic and wetland flora dated mid-late 17th century. I. Guildenstendt and D.I. Bagaliy published the fragmentary data on the flora composition of Slobidska Ukraine from the end of the 16th to the beginning of the 17th century. The new stage of botanical studies in the region was connected with the foundation of the Kharkiv University in 1804. K.F. Ledebur published "Flora Rossica sive enumeration plantarum in totis Imperi Rossici provincis Europaeis, Asiaticia et Americanis hucusque observatarum" in 1842–1853. It also contains some data for the small part of the Kharkiv province. The first fundamental monograph is "Conspectus plantarum…", published in 1859 by V.M. Chernjajev. The list includes 1769 species. The Natural Researchers Society was founded in 1869 in Kharkiv University. The members of this organization provided numerous botanical expeditions. The analysis of literature sources of 19th century revealed thatthat despite the active study of flora and vegetation of the region, or its individual administrative territories we do not know any specialized floristic work on the study of flora and vegetation of water bodies and wetlands. However, the analysed publications contain important historical information on the distribution of rare regional species. Most of them are currently either extinct or critically endangered, e.g. Calla palustris, Callitriche stagnalis, Drosera rotundifolia, Ledum palustre, Limnanthemum nymphoides, Trapa natans, Oxycoccus palustris etc. Thus, the period from the end of the 16th to the end of the 19th century is a period of the floristic researches of the Kharkiv region and adjacent territories. The main researchers were V.M. Chernjajev, I. Kovalevsky, K.S. Gornytsky, V.I. Taliev, P.M. Nalyvaiko with the exception of some works in a new area of research – applied, which began to appear only in the late 19th century. У статті розглянуто історію дослідження флори водойм та перезволожених територій східної частини Дніпровсько-Донецької западини у XVIII-ХІХ столітті. За результатами проведеного літературного пошуку встановлено, що першими достовірними даними, які містять інформацію про флору регіону датуються серединою-кінцем ХVIІ століття є флористичні дослідження академіка Й.А. Гюльденштедта та, пізніше, українського історика, філософа Д.І. Багалія, публікують фрагментарні дані щодо складу флори Слобідської України станом на кінець XVI – початок XVII століття. Розквіт ботанічних досліджень в регіоні був пов’язаний з відкриттям у 1804 році Харківського університету. Саме з цього часу починається планомірне дослідження флори Харківської губернії та її окремих повітів. Фундаментальною піонерною роботою, що й натепер є еталоном та відправною точкою для аналізу флори території колишньої Харківської губернії, стала праця В.М. Черняєва «Конспект растений…», опублікована у 1859 році. Чисельні тривалі ботанічні екскурсії з дослідження флористичного різноманіття в цей період відбуваються завдяки активній діяльності Товариства дослідників природи при Харківському Імператорському університеті, яке було засновано у 1869 році та зробило значний вклад у розвиток ботанічної науки Лівобережної України. В цей час публікуються анотовані списки, або наводиться загальна характеристика рослинного покриву в численних природничих роботах. У 1791 (1891) р. виходить праця Й.А. Гюльденштедта «Reisen durch Russland», що містить окремі флористичні дані для незначної частини Харківської губернії; у 1842–1853 роках К.Ф. Ледебур публікує «Flora Rossica sive enumeration plantarum in totis Imperi Rossici provincis Europaeis, Asiaticia et Americanis hucusque observatarum», що також містить окремі ботанічні відомості для незначної частини Харківської губернії. Лише у 1859 році виходить класична праця В.М. Черняєва щодо флори Харківської губернії та суміжних територій (містить 1769 видів). Проведений аналіз літературних джерел ХІХ століття виявив, що незважаючи на активне дослідження флори та рослинності регіону або його окремих адміністративних територій, жодна спеціалізована флористична робота щодо вивчення флори та рослинності водойм та перезволожених місцезростань нам не відома. Проте у досліджених роботах міститься важлива історична інформація щодо розповсюдження рідкісних для регіону видів, які на теперішній час або зникли, або знаходяться на межі зникнення: Calla palustris, Callitriche stagnalis, Drosera rotundifolia, Ledum palustre, Limnanthemum nymphoides, Trapa natans, Oxycoccus palustris та деякі інші. Загалом період з кінця XVI до кінця ХІХ століття у ботанічних дослідженнях території Харківської та суміжних областей, що територіально належать до східної частини Дніпровсько-Донецької западини, можна охарактеризувати як флористичний період, де головними дослідниками були: В.М. Черняєв, І. Ковалевський, К.С. Горницький, В.І. Талієв, П.М. Наливайко, за виключенням окремих робіт з нового напряму досліджень – прикладного, які починають з’являтись лише наприкінці ХІХ століття. ЩОДО ВИВЧЕННЯ БІОЛОГО–ЕКОЛОГІЧНИХ ОСОБЛИВОСТЕЙ ЖУРАВЛИНИ БОЛОТНОЇ OXYCOCCUS PALUSTRIS PERS. В ПОЛІСЬКОМУ ЗАПОВІДНИКУ

Наведено результати багаторічних досліджень біолого-екологічних особливо-стей журавлини болотної Oxycoccus palustris в Поліському заповіднику. Подана характерис-тика основних негативних чинників, які привели до скорочення запасів даного виду (посухи, торфові пожежі). В результаті обстежень журавлинників виявлено декілька морфологічних форм ягід та зафіксоване рідкісне явище – вторинне цвітіння в період масового дозрівання ягід.

The Introduction and Breeding of Vaccinioideae in Russia

This article briefly reviews the history of researching the introduction and breeding of cranberry, blueberry and cowberry in the world. The results and prospects of research in these areas in the CSBS SB RAS and the CEFES ARRISMF are presented. The article shows the effectiveness of selecting from natural populations promising material for introduction and breeding, and also the usage of intraspecific and interspecific hybridization for Vaccinioidaea breeding. As a result of longterm studies, the collections of Vaccinioidae were made in Russia. In CSBG SB RAS it totals 7 species, 1 subspecies, 54 varieties, 8 hybrids, 101 forms, including 64 selections and world’s first 8 varieties of Vaccinium uliginosum. In CE FES ARRISMF it totals 7 species, 1 subspecies, 82 varieties, 40 hybrids, 58 forms including 40 selections and the first Russian 7 varieties of Oxycoccus palustris and 3 varieties of Vaccinium vitis-idaea.

Crop wild relatives in the Magadan province of Russia: perspectives of gene pool conservation

Eight species classified as rare in the Magadan Province, including those located at the boundary of their natural distribution area, with a narrow ecological amplitude, require not only monitoring of the known, but also search for new populations. These species can be recommended for the inclusion in the Red List of Crop Wild Relatives of the Far East. Most successfully these species can be conserved in protected areas with a special conservation regime. Populations of three species recorded in the Magadansky State Nature Reserve (Allium ochotense Prokh., Caragana jubata (Pall.) Poir. and Oxycoccus palustris Pers.) should be monitored on a regular basis. The occurrence of Rheum compactum L. in the nature reserve needs to be confirmed. Also, Rheum compactum L. and others species not recorded in the nature reserve, i.e., Artemisia dracunculus L., Bromopsis canadensis (Michx.) Holub, Dracocephalum stellerianum F. Hiltebr. and Linum komarovii Juz., require a search for stable cenoses (and establishment of intracenotic relations) in order to justify the need in creating special nature micro-reserves, including those in other specially protected areas of the province.

Dynamics of vegetation changes in oil and salt-contaminated oligotrophic ridge-hollow mire complexes after reclamation (Middle Pre-Ob region, Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug – Yugra)

Oligotrophic ridge-hollow and ridge-hollow-pool complex mires are widely distributed in the central part of West Siberia, including many oil fields of the Middle Pre-Ob region. The article considers the dynamics of re-vegetation of oil and salt-contaminated areas of these mire types subjected to reclamation. Survey materials for 2–3 years and 15 years after reclamation allow to identify the main trends in vegetation restoration in the short and medium term. The reversible oligotrophication of ridges manifests in a relative decrease in the participation of the meso-eutrophic species on contaminated mire sites. In the hollows, however, the similar trend can be traced only in relation to oil-contaminated sites, whereas in the salt-contaminated hollows, the strong eutrophic conditions last. In the medium-term perspective, most typical oligotrophic hollow species, with the exception of Eriophorum russeolum and Oxycoccus palustris, were unable to recover. In the course of dynamic changes in the vegetation, the leading role in recovery successions gradually passes to mesotrophic and eutrophic species possessing massive root systems and aerenchyma – Eriophorum angustifolium, Phragmites australis, Carex rostrata, etc. Restoration of the moss layer is several years behind that of the grass layer, and due to the lack of competition, the participation of liverworts in it is of great importance, especially in salt spills. At the same time, among mosses as in the case of vascular species mesotrophic components are the main dominant ones15 years after reclamation.

Integrated population analysis as a direction of the modern biological and ecological researches

Some historical aspects of the formation of population ecology and biology as a separate scientific field are highlighted. It is noted that at the present stage, an integrated approach of studying populations is increasingly used. The work provides information on the main components of complex population studies implemented at the scientific school of plant population ecology created at Sumy National Agrarian University by Prof. Yu.A. Zlobin. The main achievements of the representatives of this school are shown, and it is also noted that, on the basis of their scientific achievements, the number of studied objects is gradually expanding. An example of this is the use of integrated population analysis for the study of protected autochthonous dendrosozophytes of Ukrainian Polissia whose representative, in particular, is Oxycoccus palustris Pers. Using the example of this species, the basic aspects of the application of complex population analysis are described, including determining the size of the population field, population density, size and morphological characteristics of individuals that form the populations, as well as the ontogenetic, size, and vital structure of populations. Based on such studies, swamp and forest-swamp phytocenoses were differentiated according to the degree of favorableness for the existence and functioning of O. palustris populations. At the same time, populations that can be considered as objects of regulated procurement of plant materials of O. palustris were identified. The conditions of the oligotrophic swamp and the grouping of Sphagnetum (cuspidati) eriophorosum (vaginati) are proved to be the most favorable for the formation of Oxycoccus palustris coenopopulations with high population density, vitality, diversity of size structure and balanced structure Populations from this grouping can be considered as centers of regulated harvesting of plant products and plant materials of the investigated species. Compared to swamp, forest-swamp phytocoenoses were less favorable for the formation and existence of coenopopulations of O. palustris, although they also revealed coenopopulations with a complex of high population characteristics Based on the results of studies and elucidation of the characteristics of populations, the original coenopopulation principle of constructing phytocenocompositions from species of natural flora was also proposed and tested. Its essence is that in the selection of certain species in the composition of phytocenocompositions it is necessary to rely on the indicators of phytocenoses, in which its populations have signs of ability for stable and long-term existence in the composition of plant groups The determinants features in this complex are the area of the population field, population density and characteristics of the structure, especially ontogenetic and vitality. According to the first feature of these traits, it is necessary that the populations belong to the group of young, transient or maturing and not to be aging or old, and according to the second – to represent the category of prosperous.
