The diseases related to female genital system are elaborated under umbrella of ‘Yonivyapad’ in Ayurveda.  Vitiated Vatadosha causes pain during menstruation and subsides after menstruation. This condition is explained as Udavartini Yonivyapad in Charaka Samhita. Both Primary dysmenorrhea as per modern gynaecology and Udavartini Yonivyapad from Ayurveda show similarities in their signs and symptoms, especially pain during menstruation. After deliberation of Charaka Samhita, effect of oral administration of Rasnadi Ksheera and local Guduchyadi Kwatha Parisheka were considered for their textual reference on ‘Yonishoola’. For this single arm, open labelled, prospective study; 30 married females between the age of 18 to 42 years with Pratyatma Lakshana (cardinal features) of Udavartini Yonivyapad & signs and symptoms of primary dysmenorrhea were selected. They were given Rasnadi Ksheera 80 ml orally in Apana Kala (i.e. Before lunch & dinner) for two months. Guduchyadi Kwatha Parisheka (Vaginal Douche) was performed in Rutukala for 8 days duration (i.e. from 5th day of menstrual cycle to 12th day of menstrual cycle) for two consecutive cycles. The assessment was done on basis of standard parameters before treatment and after treatment. The subjective parameters such as Spasmodic pain in abdomen, Lumbo-sacral backache, Pain radiating to thigh, Vomiting, Constipation were assessed. The study data generated and collected was put to statistical analysis to reach to the final results and conclusions.  It was concluded that oral administration of Rasnadi Ksheera and local Guduchyadi Kwatha Parisheka were highly effective in symptomatic management of Udavarta Yonivyapad W. S. R. to primary dysmenorrhea.

Ayurveda considers women most precious because of their key role in continuing progeny. The diseases affecting the Yoni (female genital tract) and their therapeutics have been illustrated under the heading of Yonivyapad (diseases of female genital system). Artava (menstruation) when associated with unbearable pain is termed as  Kashtartava. Vitiated Vata Dosha is the main causative factor of any kind of gynecological disorders. The process of menstruation is mainly under the control of Apana Vata. The treatment of this vitiated Vata remains main objective for treatment of Kashtartava (dysmenorrhoea). Along with internal medication, local soothing of pain is also important in general treatment of Vata Dosha. Thus, a treatment protocol was developed considering these  aspects for management of patients suffering with Kashtartava (dysmenorrhoea). The protocol consisted of internal administration of Hinguvachadi Churna and local treatment of Tila Taila Yoni Parisheka (Vaginal douche). In the present case series, three eligible patients were explained the purpose and possible effect of multimodal treatment of Hinguvachadi Churna & Tila Taila Yoni Parisheka. Treatment was prescribed to the patients those who were willing for it. Patient outcomes were also noted and analysed. It was observed that multimodal treatment of Hinguvachadi Churna and Tila Taila Yoni Parisheka was effective in the cases where it was used.

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of vaginal tampons and vaginal douche practices among women.Method: The sample of the study was consisted of 200 women who participated the Women's Health Education Program (WHEP) conducted by the Turkish Family Health and Planning Foundation in Diyarbakir, Istanbul, Kilis and İzmir. Data were collected with face-to-face interviews using a 33-item questionnaire between November 2014 and January 2016. Ethical approval was obtained from the ethics committee of Bezmialem Foundation University and written consent was obtained from the women who voluntarily participated in the study. The data were evaluated using SPSS 16.0 package program using percentage, chi-square and logistic regression analysis. Results: More than half of the participating women were using vaginal douche (56.0%), while those receiving vaginal tampons (24.5%) were fewer. Vaginal douching was most needed after sexual intercourse (39.5%) and mostly practiced with water (58.9%). It was determined that as the level of education increased, there was a decrease in the rate of vaginal douche and tampon use, even if it did not reach a significant level. Most of the women who married under the age of 18 were doing these practices more often. Of the women, 69.6% stated that vaginal douche was beneficial for health. The rate of women who had counseling from a health professional about vaginal douche was 15%, and 28.5% of women reported that they recommended this practice to others. Conclusion: A significant proportion of women were practicing vaginal douche and even more striking is that they have no awareness that this practice may be harmful. It will be important for the health professionals to give importance on this issue in their education and counseling programs for women.
