Purpose Persons with mental illness (PWMI) need to be housed and cared for properly. Providing this support can be physically, financially and psychologically exhausting for the caregiver. The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of a caregiver managing a mental home in Ghana and to get a deeper understanding of what it really takes to host and care for PWMI. Design/methodology/approach A narrative research design was used. The narrative approach was used to gather the stories of the caregiver. Data was collected through in-depth face-to-face interview, informal conversations and field notes. Thematic analysis was performed focusing on both the personal and social experiences of the participant. Findings Three main themes emerged from the participant’s experience as follows: stigma and rejection, burden of hosting and support from others. The study also found that what it takes to host and care for PWMI is psychological resilience as follows: determination and love. An appeal is made to individuals to also support PWMI instead of the government alone. Originality/value The outcomes of this study indicate that the life of a caregiver managing a mental home is a journey characterized by stigma, rejection and financial burden. It highlights the importance of support from others for the caregiver to keep providing optimal care. This paper contributes to the literature on carer resilience by providing evidence that once there is determination and love, PWMI can be housed and cared for in Ghana.

PurposeSouth Korea has shown ultra-low fertility since the 2000s despite a massive expansion of pro-natal policies. The purpose of this research is to analyse institutional and socio-cultural configurations surrounding Korea's pro-natal policy and provide implications as to why the comprehensive packages have not produced intended outcomes.Design/methodology/approachThis study assumes institutional complementarities, suggesting that the effectiveness of policy depends on various support factors. Drawing out insights from the framework of de-familisation, the authors construct a gender and family framework to analyse the pro-natal policy configurations in Korea.FindingsLabour market policies in Korea have explicitly aimed to support dual-earner couples and protect women's employment status after childbirth. However, the dualistic labour market and remaining female-caregiver norms lead to the polarisation of couples into dual earners and male breadwinners. In family policy, the government has rapidly increased affordable childcare services, but widespread distrust in private services and generous birth-related cash benefits formulate a tension between de-familisation and continued familisation. Other welfare programmes that attach welfare rights to marital status also prolong female-caregiver norms in institutional arrangements. The findings suggest that the ambivalence between recent policy developments and the existing arrangements can limit the effectiveness of the policy packages.Originality/valueThe framework based on institutional complementarities addresses the limitations of previous studies concentrating on the statistical testing of individual policy effects. A similar approach can be applied to other countries showing major policy efforts but producing unsatisfactory outcomes.

AbstractObjective: to describe experiences related to female caregivers' experience regarding the care of children with microcephaly associated with the Zika virus. Method: this is a qualitative, descriptive, exploratory study, conducted with the support of two female participants/caregivers of children with microcephaly, through semi-structured interviews and analyzed by the IRAMUTEQ software, which generated the word cloud and the similarity tree. Results: the term “child” was evidenced in the reports as of paramount importance in the female caregivers' lives. It was noticed that the father figure and/or family members were not linked to the care process and the governmental assistance directed to the female caregivers was flawed due to the lack of specific health promotion activities. It is pointed out that mothers faced drastic changes in their life trajectories and felt alone. Conclusion: it can be seen that the experiences revealed the overload, the responsibilities and the resignification of the female identity with self-perception, primarily focused on the social role of mother/female caregiver of the child with microcephaly. Descriptors: Microcephaly; Zika vírus; Female Caregivers; Child; Nurse; Qualitative Research.ResumenObjetivo: describir las experiencias relacionadas con la experiencia de los cuidadores con respecto al cuidado de niños con microcefalia asociada al virus del Zika. In this chapter, the authors focus on adult female caregivers performing informal caregiving tasks to adult females diagnosed with cancer. The authors limit discussion to a binary definition of gender, whereas Chapter 11 addresses gender minorities, including transwomen caregivers and transgender care recipients. The authors present national data on adult caregivers and describe the characteristics of female-to-female caregivers. They present a theoretical model for evaluating the impact of female-to-female cancer caregiving and review interventions that are relevant to this group of caregivers. While female caregiver to female patient is the most prevalent caregiver–patient combination, there is mostly an absence of same-gender effects on cancer caregiving and interventions.

This study examines a sample of 299 advertisements from 4 of the top 10 circulated magazines of 2005 to see how contemporary advertising depicts household labor. Modeling after previous studies that examined the depiction of gender in family advertising, this study seeks to determine whether advertising reflects the changes in families that have occurred in contemporary American culture. The authors use Hochschild's (1989) typology of traditional, transitional, and egalitarian families to examine whether advertisements' portrayal of men and women in family situations resemble traditional (male breadwinner, female caregiver) or more contemporary parenting ideologies (men providing care, women in the labor force, etc.).
