Uniforms carry cultural meaning shaped by their interaction with military realities. They can communicate tradition but also anticipate change. Prior to the Great War, British Army uniforms had developed from the familiar red tunic to khaki, but the manner of their representation in the mass culture confirmed a continuity and correctness of the British way of war that ran against the emerging industrialization of warfare. Wearing familiar uniforms linked to the past and concurrently fighting what seemed like anachronistic ‘small wars’ in empire as reported in the press, what awaited the volunteers of 1914–15 could not have been anticipated by those consumers of the commercial culture. This article uses a variety of sources, from the illustrated adult and juvenile press, paintings, and toys, to reveal the link between uniforms and the representation of warfare in the fifty years prior to the Great War. In that representation we see not just the glorification of war that cultural historians attach to gendered, imperialist, or nationalist meanings. This article argues that the role of uniforms in the representation of warfare was a means by which to make it knowable and worthwhile for the consumer public. But by representing past and contemporary uniforms quite accurately, the writers and artists imposed a sense of military continuity at a time when war was changing.

Vedic management refers to the usage of the knowledge and the invaluable insights as one finds in the ancient Indian scriptures popularly known as Vedas. The knowledge which is to be found in the Vedas is of supreme authority despite being ancient. In fact the veracity of such knowledge has never been more than in the present ages when everything is in the state of constant change. Vedic management precisely deals with such ever-changing scenario in much better manner than many of the so-called modern methods of management. The inscriptions of the Vedas are a school of thought in themselves and when one delves into them much deeper then they leave no doubt in the mind of the seeker that they have answers to all their questions, explicit as well as implicit. The knowledge one gets in the Vedas is esoteric in nature, nevertheless it helps in grasping the significance of the circumstances which one faces in the changing scenario of today’s world and more than readies one to face them. The Vedas recognize the importance of the dynamism of the world and its dynamic environment. This paper tries to put into perspective various Vedic concepts which have proven their worth over the course of time as to how one can successfully adjust to and even anticipate change in one’s life, both professional and personal (Londhe, 2018). The Vedic literature propagates emancipation of the mankind, both physical as well as spiritual. The paper tries to relate the Vedas with the modern business management principles and practices. This paper goes on to highlight how one can benefit immensely be practicing the various Vedic concepts to come out of the changing paradigms in a never-before way. This is made possible because of the veracity of the Vedas, because of the simple fact that Vedas have been an incessant source of wisdom and sagacity which has withstood every test of time and which has proven, time and again, that no matter how old the knowledge is, what matters is how good a person is in interpreting and utilizing it. Thus, the Vedas encourage one to face the unknown facets of life, howsoever difficult they are, with much ease and assuredness and that is the theme of this paper which would put together the significance of Vedic Management and its subsequent impact of managing change in today’s world of clutter, confusion, chaos and competition.

Chapter 1 begins in early twentieth-century America and offers a prehistory of trend forecasting. The era saw society swiftly modernizing; in turn, the social sciences were producing a surfeit of data about life and culture. Observers, social critics, and government technocrats began to think of these data as predictive and explored how they could be used to make decisions and dampen uncertainty about the future. In light of these developments, “trends” emerged as a tool, allowing data to be used to anticipate change. The chapter highlights the 1933 study Recent Social Trends as a primary example of how trends could be used to manage uncertainty. The chapter also documents how trends served these ends in the burgeoning forecasting professions, including weather, economics, and fashion.

As a result of increasing globalization, people are exposed to an even greater extent to other cultures, making it possible for individuals to assimilate mindsets that are typical of another culture. Recent work on extracultural cognition has shown that immediate cultural contexts exert powerful influences on cognition and behavioral patterns. This chapter reviews empirical support for extracultural cognition. Specifically, the chapter focuses on dialectical thinking and the well-established finding in the cultural literature that Westerners tend to anticipate linear continuity in the environment and East Asians anticipate change in existing patterns. Research shows, though, that cultural cues may shift these tendencies and—at least temporarily—alter cognitive mindsets to reflect the cognitions of another culture. After a review of the literature, the chapter addresses the implications of extracultural cognition for understanding the influence of dialectical thinking on judgment and decision-making.

In this paper the application of the Extended Finite Element Method (XFEM) to anticipate change of the behaviour of composite with complex internal structure after use of the admixtures was presented. The response to mechanical loadings of bent beams made of hydraulically bonded mixture with rubber admixture was considered. The impact of the rubber granulate on the value of fracture energy was analysed. Moreover, the influence of an interfacial transmission zone quality on the achieved effect was assessed. Calculations were conducted by means of the muli-scale numerical model which was built in ABAQUS finite element method environment. The results derived indicate beneficial effect of rubber granulate on fracture energy of hydraulically bonded mixture.

Purpose As is the case of all organizations, the academic library is a body reflecting the contribution of its core employees. As such, the roles performed by academic librarians are crucial to its development and existence. The purpose of this paper is to explore the role of academic librarians as change champions in an information age that has been, still is, and is expected to be continuously pervaded by varying and widespread changes in librarianship and scholarship coupled with the ever changing and expanding user needs and expectations. The paper also identifies a framework to perform this role. Design/methodology/approach This paper is informed by opinion and draws on relevant literature to highlight the current climate and what is being perceived as valuable to the future direction of academic libraries in order to bring credence to its trajectory. Findings Academic librarians must readily accept, be responsive to, and anticipate change to maintain and justify their relevance to stakeholders. Yet, anecdotal evidence suggests that not all librarians are prepared to embrace change. Practical implications Academic librarians must understand how their roles influence the decision-making processes of the stakeholders and vice versa. Originality/value The paper advances five principles or 5As to guide the change process in academic libraries: alignment, accountability, agility, accessibility, and assessment. Very briefly, it discusses the relevance of a concept referred to as the competition-collaboration continuum to further academic librarianship. These notions serve to assist academic librarians in determining the appropriate actions to be taken now.
