Photoluminescence-Based Bioassay With Cysteamine-Capped TiO2 Nanoparticles for the Selective Recognition of N-Acyl Homoserine Lactones

Currently available diagnostic procedures for infections are laborious and time-consuming, resulting in a substantial financial burden by increasing morbidity, increased costs of hospitalization, and mortality. Therefore, innovative approaches to design diagnostic biomarkers are imperative to assist in the rapid and sensitive diagnosis of microbial infections. Acyl homoserine lactones (AHLs) are ubiquitous bacterial signaling molecules that are found to be significantly upregulated in infected sites. In this pioneering work, we have developed a simple photoluminescence-based assay using cysteamine-capped titanium oxide (TiO2) nanoparticles for AHL detection. The PL intensity variation of the oxygen defect state of TiO2 was used for the biosensing measurements. The bioassays were validated using two well-studied AHL molecules (C4-HSL and 3-oxo-C12 HSL) of an important human pathogen, Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The developed system has a maximum relative response of 98%. Furthermore, the efficacy of the system in simulated host urine using an artificial urine medium showed a linear detection range of 10–160 nM. Also, we confirmed the relative response and specificity of the system in detecting AHLs produced by P. aeruginosa in a temporal manner.

Optimization of data processing in aircraft transponder of the "friend or foe" identification system

The paper synthesizes the optimal structure of data processing of the aircraft transponder of the “friend or foe” identification system based on the Neumann-Pearson criterion. It is also shown, that when synthesizing and analyzing the optimal structure of signal data processing in aircraft transponders of "friend or foe" identification systems, it is necessary to take into account the multichannel reception of request signals and limitations of relative throughput of the aircraft transponder, which is caused by the existing principle of constructing the system as single-channel queuing system with failures. The proposed models make it possible to implement the structures of data processing of request signals for situations of inter-channel merging of previous channel decisions on the detection of request signals or pulse components of the request signals. In the proposed structure, the optimization of data processing is carried out not only in time but also in the spatial parameters of the request signals, and also takes into account the relative bandwidth of the aircraft responder. It is shown that the inter channel merging of the results of detecting the component pulses of the query signals is more preferable compared to the existing algorithm of merging the results of detecting the query signals, as it improves the quality of query signal detection and reduces the dependence of query signal detection of relative response.

Silicon thin film transistor-based aptamer sensor for COVID-19 detection

Since the beginning of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in December 2019 and the current lack to date of specific drugs or vaccinations to cope with the disease, it has become apparent that the surest way of dealing with this is through early diagnosis and management. Current testing has shown to be unable to rapidly and accurately provide the results required to restrict the spread. Here we report the use of an intrinsic silicon thin film transistor functionalised with aptamers designed to attach to the spike protein of COVID-19. It is shown that a linear response can be obtained in a concentration of 10 fM and 10 pM, and that the relative response is independent of the applied potential allowing a sensory system to fine tune the applied potential to facilitate the interpretation of the results.

Determination of Triacylglycerols by HTGC-FID as a Sensitive Tool for the Identification of Rapeseed and Olive Oil Adulteration

Triacylglycerols (TGs) are the most common compounds in food lipids, accounting for 95% of the weight of edible oils. The aim of this study was to scrutinize a procedure for quantitatively assessing possible adulteration of olive and rapeseed oil through GC-FID analysis of TGs. The recovery of TG standards ranged from 21% to 148%, and the relative response factor (RRF) ranged from 0.42 to 2.28. The limits of detection were in the range of 0.001 to 0.330 µg/mL, and the limits of quantitation from 0.001 to 1.000 µg/mL. The validated method was used to determine the TGs in olive oil (OO), refined rapeseed oil (RRO), and their blends. Eight TGs were detected in refined rapeseed oil, and 10 in olive oil. The addition of 1% of olive oil to rapeseed oil or vice versa can be detected using this method. Three triacylglycerols were pinpointed as indicators of adulteration of rapeseed oil with olive oil (PPO, PPL, PSO). The method described here can be used for controlling the quality of these oils.

Chemiresistive Properties of Imprinted Fluorinated Graphene Films

The electrical conductivity of graphene materials is strongly sensitive to the surface adsorbates, which makes them an excellent platform for the development of gas sensor devices. Functionalization of the surface of graphene opens up the possibility of adjusting the sensor to a target molecule. Here, we investigated the sensor properties of fluorinated graphene films towards exposure to low concentrations of nitrogen dioxide NO2. The films were produced by liquid-phase exfoliation of fluorinated graphite samples with a composition of CF0.08, CF0.23, and CF0.33. Fluorination of graphite using a BrF3/Br2 mixture at room temperature resulted in the covalent attachment of fluorine to basal carbon atoms, which was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron and Raman spectroscopies. Depending on the fluorination degree, the graphite powders had a different dispersion ability in toluene, which affected an average lateral size and thickness of the flakes. The films obtained from fluorinated graphite CF0.33 showed the highest relative response ca. 43% towards 100 ppm NO2 and the best recovery ca. 37% at room temperature.
