The current television era, sometimes called “Peak TV,” was ushered in with serious creatordriven shows of the late 1990s. The increasingly frequent Indian character type of the manipulative, money-hungry, and usually criminal casino “chief”/CEO simultaneously offers dramatically significant guest-star roles for Native actors and reflects a neoliberal version of the Noble Savage fit for twenty-first century audiences. This article analyzes examples of the “casino Indian: characterization found in the award-winning television dramas The Sopranos, Big Love, The Killing and House of Cards. Adapting the figure of the imagined “Indian” to suit the anxieties of our political and economic moment, each of these critically acclaimed shows have created an image of “Indianness” in relation to “casinos” and thereby have added the casino Indian trope to the long-established line of “Indian” characters crafted by non-Native “experts,” writers, and artists of the stage and screen.

This chapter takes the reader to aging Harry Dean Stanton's Mulholland Drive home where he watched game shows, worked crossword puzzles, entertained guests with his music. Often he came in late after dinner at Ago and drinks at Dan Tana's, staying up into the wee hours, smoking his cigarettes, going to bed alone. His two closest relatives, Sara Stanton and Jim Huggins Jr., became his protectors when his health failed. At work, he scored important supporting roles in The Man Who Cried (2000) with Johnny Depp and Sean Penn's The Pledge (2001). He was memorable as devious Mormon patriarch Roman Grant in the HBO series Big Love. He was in a handful of forgettable films, too, before landing the lead in his final film Lucky (2017), written by his personal assistant Logan Sparks and Drago Sumonja. The storyline was roughly Harry Dean's own, a fitting screen farewell as health issues landed him in a series of hospitals. Sara and Jim stood guard as legions of friends and fans came to pay homage. He died fearful of death despite the consolations of Zen teaching. His remains were returned to Lexington and placed near his mother's grave.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide a profile of Clare Campbell. Design/methodology/approach – Clare provides a short autobiographical account of her life. Clare is then interviewed by Jerome and describes the life enhancing impact of creativity in her own life. Findings – Clare describes her work initially with Wild Woman workshops and then Big Love Sista. Research limitations/implications – Big Love Sista started when some 40 women all came and painted self-portraits in Clare’s house, which led to an exhibition of 100 life sized portraits on women in recovery from difficult life events. Practical implications – Apart from the healing power of Art, Clare’s work shows the power of bringing leaders together with disadvantaged groups, using the medium of the circle to provide unique experiential change. Social implications – Community leaders have access to lots of resources and opportunities. In coming together with disadvantaged groups, they can serve as role models, but equally they can be inspired by those they encounter in the medium of the circle. Originality/value – Clare and those colleagues she has worked with over the years has shown the power of community and the transformative effects of groupwork. Few individuals can have had such a dramatic effect on so many people.
