Leggere Istanbul

Using the metaphor of the city-text, the volume investigates in a comparative perspective the representations of Istanbul in the works of two pairs of authors: Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar/Orhan Pamuk and Yaşar Kemal/Latife Tekin. The notions of memory and language provide the main hermeneutical cyphers in the analysis of each urban poetics, considered respectively as attempts of (re)writing and translation of mnesic and cultural text of the city in the literary space of high national culture. Moving from the centre to periphery, such an itinerary aims to highlight the intimate relationship between forms of aesthetical appropriation of urban space-time and (de)construction processes of Turkish national canon.

Crowds, Clouds, Politics and Aesthetics, Flipping Again

This paper seeks an urban poetics under the pressures of flux, polyglot babble and the rise of technoculture. In so doing it traces the intertwinements of aesthetics and politics as they manifest over the last 150 years. Charles Baudelaire’s poetry is characterised as a delirious response to the delirium of capitalist modernity, in which ‘words rise up’, as he puts it, but it is a also a barometer, which measures the degrees of entwinement of aesthetics and revolutionary politics in the subsequent years, for one in Walter Benjamin’s interpretation in the 1930s and in the wild translations of the poet by Sean Bonney in 2008 in the collection ‘Baudelaire in English’.

Poéticas urbanas e suas geograficidades: desaprendendo a gramática visual do mesmo / Urban poetics and their geographicities: unlearning the visual grammar of the repeated images

“Repetir repetir - até ficar diferente”, é o que nos incentiva Manoel de Barros na sua “didática da invenção”. Porém, até que ponto a repetição é algo que nos aprisiona ao invés de nos permitir essa espécie de autonomia de pensamento, de imaginação e de criatividade que tanto apregoa e defende o poeta? O próprio Manoel nos dá uma pista quando diz que “repetir é um dom do estilo”, ou seja, quanto mais repetida for sua imagem iconográfica, menos potente será sua forma visual ou a prática discursiva, no sentido do “ficar diferente”. Dito de outra forma, a imagem repetida é o empobrecimento da imaginação e, portanto, da nossa capacidade de pensamento. Se tomarmos, por exemplo, as grandes cidades contemporâneas como tema, um dos assuntos que mais tem circulado pelas bocas, olhos e dedos das pessoas é a chamada “mobilidade urbana”. Qual seria a imagem repetida que define a mobilidade para como uma forma pensar e viver a cidade? Como se constitui essa sinonímia visual? Quais as implicações políticas dessas gramáticas visuais do mesmo? Qual o lugar do poético nesse contexto? Essas são questões que têm me acompanhado. Este artigo tem como objetivo compartilhar algumas experimentações conceituais e imaginativas que são uma forma de lidar com elas.
