Tramas cruzadas en el extraño caso de Juan Luis Martínez

En este artículo se hace una revisión de algunas tramas cruzadas en la obra de Juan Luis Martínez, particularmente en La nueva novela, relativas específicamente a 1) sus modos de inserción en el campo poético chileno, considerando especialmente las formas en las que se relacionan con las obras de Vicente Huidobro y la Nicanor Parra, que anteceden su obra; 2) sus estrategias de simulación, parodia y ocultamiento de la figura y de la identidad del autor, así como su paradójica vinculación con el legado borgiano; 3) las convergencias y divergencias entre el pensamiento oriental y occidental o la asunción de la imposibilidad del poema: el pajarístico atrapado en la red del ideograma.

Material Poetics in Hemispheric America

Material Poetics in Hemispheric America examines poets and artists in the Americas during the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries to show how they worked to make language into material objects and material objects into language. It builds a theory of ‘material poetics’ that provides an alternative account of poetry in hemispheric America. It argues that by reframing American poetry to prominently include object-oriented practices within and beyond the United States, material poetry can be seen as representing a significant branch of the American poetic tradition. This book puts contemporary theories of objects and matter into conversation with a variety of American approaches to material poetics. These approaches result in one-word poems more concerned with the look of language than its meaning, artworks that invite viewers to physically engage with language, poems assembled from networks of out-of-place words and things, poetic monuments that meditate on (and take up) space, and poetry that attempts to materialise the remnants of lyrics and lives. By examining five case studies, drawn from Brazil, Chile, the United States, and Canada, it investigates five ways of conceptualizing these poetic objects—as autonomous, relational, assembled, architectural, and posthuman. Poets and artists featured include Haroldo de Campos, Décio Pignatari, Augusto de Campos, Ferreira Gullar, Hélio Oiticica, Lygia Pape, Juan Luis Martínez, Ronald Johnson, and Anne Carson.

Assembling La nueva novela: Juan Luis Martínez and a Material Poetics of Relation

Chapter 3 examines the material poetics of relation that contribute to the Juan Luis Martínez-assembled 1970s artist’s book La nueva novela. It is constructed from such diverse parts as: visual maths problems in which, for example, a painting of Rimbaud and a military jacket minus a shoe, a boot and a sock equals suspenders, a spat and a sock; metal fishhooks taped to a page; riddles and circular problems of logic; other people’s poems; musical scores; drawings, for example, of a pipe split in half (titled ‘Meditations on René Magritte’ and dedicated to Foucault); among many other things. This chapter turns to Édouard Glissant’s ‘poetics of relation’ and Manuel DeLanda’s elaboration of ‘assemblage theory’. By bringing together these texts, which both draw from Deleuze and Guattari’s concept of the rhizome, this chapter demonstrates poetry’s condition of being is as a ‘multiplicity’, one that, as Martínez says, ‘operate[s] permanently in every direction’. By comparing how the book’s contents work to both bind it together as a whole and unbind it into a near-infinite network of pieces that can and do belong to other assemblages, this chapter makes a case for understanding books and their contents as bound by relations of exteriority.

DE LO FANTÁSTICO EN LA POESÍA: HACIA UNA SEMIÓTICA DE LA DESAPARICIÓN. A PROPÓSITO DE LECTURA, ANTROPOFAGÍA Y PICNOLEPSIA EN “LA DESAPARICIÓN DE UNA FAMILIA” DE JUAN LUIS MARTÍNEZ

Resumen: El trabajo se propone realizar una lectura semiótica conforme ala presencia de lo fantástico en el poema “La desaparición de una familia”de Juan Luis Martínez. A este propósito, se articula un amplio marco deconceptos relativos a la lectura de ficción (Umberto Eco, Roland Barthes,Jean-Luc Nancy, entre otros), el entendimiento de lo fantástico comosistema semiótico (David Roas, Omar Nieto), la antropofagia sígnica(Rodrigo Browne) y la noción de picnolepsia (Paul Virilio). Con todo, sepretende formular una idea inicial de semiótica de la desaparición en tantocualidad particular del poema. Abstract: The work aims to perform a semiotic reading according to thepresence of the fantastic in the poem “La desaparición de una familia” byJuan Luis Martínez. In this regard, a broad framework of concepts relatedto fiction reading is articulated (Umberto Eco, Roland Barthes, Jean-LucNancy, among others), the understanding of the fantastic as a semioticsystem (David Roas, Omar Nieto), the anthropophagy (Rodrigo Browne)and the notion of picnolepsy (Paul Virilio). With everything, it is intendedto form an initial idea of semiotic of the disappearance as a particularquality of the poem.

Martínez y Mallarmé: El libro total en la nueva novela

De la inmensa variedad intertextual que se encuentra en La nueva novela de Juan Luis Martínez, en este artículo se analiza la presencia de la poética deMallarmé y cómo incide en el funcionamiento general de este polémico libro, especialmente en consonancia con la idea del Libro total que el poeta francésdefendió. En La nueva novela subyace una idea de totalidad que permite hacer relación con la ambiciosa e imposible concepción del Libro total. Tambiénse muestra el conocimiento que Martínez tenía de los aportes realizados por Mallarmé: independencia del lenguaje poético y el fi n de la representación,y la manera como el poeta chileno los presenta en la estructura formal de su libro experimental.
