Doctor Zhivago (David Lean, 1965): la creación poética y su representación en el cine

La adaptación cinematográfica de El doctor Zhivago se vio obligada a respetar la condición de poeta, muy relevante en la novela, del protagonista. No obstante, las digresiones sobre poesía hubieron de suprimirse para no lastrar el ritmo del relato, por lo que el director David Lean hace algunas alusiones a lo poético a partir del poder simbólico de la imagen para sugerir que la condición de poeta de Zhivago tiene un peso real.

Alienität und Alterität

Sei es die Suche nach Heimat und Identität in der scheinbar grenzenlosen Weite der Wüste (Lawrence of Arabia, 1962), die Flucht in die Stille der eiserstarrten Weite Russlands (Dr. Zhivago, 1965), der kollektive Widerstand im unbekannten Birma (The Bridge on the River Kwai, 1957) oder die verstörende Konfrontation mit sich selbst in der Fremde des polyphonen Indiens (A Passage to India, 1984) – Leans Filme, ihre Bildästhetik, aber vor allem ihre Geschichten von Begegnungen mit fremden Welten und unbekannten Kulturen, von teils privaten, teils großen Abenteuern sind bis heute unvergessen. In Erinnerung geblieben ist vor allem ihre bildgewaltige Erzählweise: großformatige Kameraeinstellungen wie die der purpurrot aufgehenden Sonne über der arabischen Wüste; das bizarr-romantisch verschneite Anwesen in Varykino oder die effektvolle und symbolträchtige Brückensprengung durch den tödlich verwundeten Nicholson – Bilder, die sicherlich nicht nur die Kinoästhetik ihrer Zeit revolutioniert, sondern auch auf der Cinemascope-Leinwand den Zuschauer gefesselt und begeistert haben. Die Arbeitsthese dieser Arbeit ist, dass sich die Filme von David Lean über immer wiederkehrende Erzählmuster beschreiben lassen, bei denen ‚Räume‘ eine wichtige Funktion übernehmen. Räume übernehmen auch auf der Ebene der Erzählung eine Funktion und sind jenseits ihrer ästhetischen Erfahrbarkeit relevant. Zu Beginn von Leans Filmen findet der Zuschauer eine Art topografische Landkarte (topografische Räume) vor, die von unterschiedlichen Figuren mit jeweils unterschiedlichen Bedeutungen aufgeladen wird (semantische Räume). Was Leans Hauptfiguren mit bestimmten Räumen verbinden, widerspricht der herrschenden Norm ihres Umfeldes: Hier trifft Heimat auf Fremde, Himmel auf Hölle, Abenteuer auf Gefahrenpotenzial. An den Grenzen der Bedeutung von Räumen entstehen also inhaltliche Konflikte: Leans Hauptfiguren sind ‚anders‘, sehen ihre Welt ‚anders‘, entsprechen damit nicht der Norm und werden von ihrem Umfeld als Störfaktor wahrgenommen.

Con Job

Matchstick Men concerns a con man, Roy Waller, played by Nicolas Cage, and his partner Frank Mercer, portrayed by Sam Rockwell, who rip people off with a lottery scam. Roy is at the top of his criminal trade but he is burdened with a seemingly endless series of psychological tics. Frank convinces Roy to engage in a “Big Con,” which turns out to be an elaborate scam against his partner, putting him out of business. The film, a dark comedy, brings the audience into Roy’s world of mental distress. Ridley Scott turned sixty-five and was knighted by the queen of England for “his service to the British Film Industry,” an honor he shares with David Lean and Alfred Hitchcock. The director now had the title Sir Ridley Scott.

Pasternak, Boris (1890–1960)

Major Russian poet and writer, Pasternak, was recognized as a leading, original poetic talent with the collection My Sister Life (written 1917, published 1922). My Sister Life is a celebration of the fecundity of nature, of love, artistic creation, and the thrilling experience of revolutionary change. Beginning in the late 1920s, Pasternak felt increasingly isolated and out of step with Soviet literary culture. After 1934 he focussed his talents on literary translation, producing some of the finest translations of Shakespeare into Russian. In 1956 Pasternak completed Doctor Zhivago, his long-dreamed-of novel about an individual hero caught up in revolutionary Russia. Pasternak was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958. An international scandal flared after he at first accepted the distinction and then was pressured by Soviet authorities to refuse it with the words "Considering the meaning this award has been given in the society to which I belong, I must reject this undeserved prize which has been presented to me." Doctor Zhivago was adapted as a major motion picture by director David Lean in 1965, and again by Giacomo Campiotti in 2002.

Paisajes en el cine irlandés. El ejemplo de La Hija de Ryan

El artículo reflexiona sobre el paisaje en el cine que tiene como escenario natural Irlanda y su geografía física y humana, mostrando la carga simbólica y emocional que posee y que determina su propio lenguaje. Se aborda la experiencia paisajística en la película La hija de Ryan (Ryan´s Daughter, David Lean, 1970), en la cual, el paisaje capaz de la trasformación humana y de los designios de los protagonistas en un sentimiento propio del movimiento romántico donde la naturaleza y el hombre son parte de un mismo cosmos que se va espiritualizando. Será, además, un paisaje en constante movimiento que se explicará mediante los símbolos y las metáforas visuales que tanto le gustaban a su director David Lean, planteando la oscuridad del hombre frente a la luz del entorno y huyendo de lo épico, dejando paso a lo dramático y permitiendo que el espectador pueda descubrir por sí mismo lo que aparece ante sus ojos.
