Florence Nightingale is well known as the mother of nursing, aptly recognized as “Lady in Chief”, immortalized as “the Lady with the Lamp”, and revered as a visionary and a catalyst for healthcare reform. Nightingale’s life and impact on patient care, nursing and nursing practice, and healthcare systems and organizations parallel the clinical nurse specialist (CNS) roles and three spheres of impact. In this article we highlight key events of Nightingale’s work that illustrate her calling and devotion as a nurse and review her observations of organizations and nursing practice and her famous twenty-month experience (1854-1856) in the Crimean War at the British Army Hospitals at Scutari. Nightingale’s critical thinking and problem analyses; implementation of interventions and positive outcomes; advancement of nursing practice based on evidence; detailed documentation and statistical analysis; and tenacious political advocacy to reform healthcare systems resembles the role of the CNS as an expert clinician, nurse educator, researcher, consultant, and leader in healthcare systems and policy creation. This article explores Nightingale’s contribution to nursing practice and education as a visionary for the role of the clinical nurse specialist.

Abstract Introduction Significant advances in medical and surgical care have often originated from our experience caring for those wounded on the battlefield. The year of the ABA’s 52nd annual meeting marks the 30th anniversary of the selection of Joseph E. Murray MD FACS as recipient of the 1990 Nobel Prize in Medicine. Methods In his autobiography Surgery of the Soul: Reflections on a Curious Career, Dr. Murray credits a 22 year old US Army aviator named Charles Woods with guiding him into an emerging field of transplantation surgery. On December 23, 1944, Woods sustained burns over 70% of his body in an accident during takeoff while teaching another pilot at his Army Air Corps base in India. Woods survived and eventually was transferred back to the US where came under of the care of a young 25 year old surgeon named Joseph Murray. Results Like many young surgeons of his era, Dr. Murray joined the military service during WWII. Dr. Murray had just completed his internship at Peter Bent Brigham in Boston in September 1944 when he was assigned to Valley Forge General Hospital in Phoenixville, PA. Valley Forge was one of eight regional US Army hospitals created during WWII dedicated to plastic surgery and burn care. It was during his care for soldiers wounded in battle at this time in his early formative years that Dr. Murray developed his curiosity regarding tissue transplantation. Following military service, he completed his surgical training in Boston and New York City, and returned to the Brigham in July 1951. His military service caring for burn victims instilled a passion and curiosity regarding transplantation of human tissue. This culminated in his leading a team to perform the first human kidney transplantation on December 23, 1954...exactly 10 years to the day after the airplane crash that injured Charlie Woods. Conclusions Recognizing his dedication and accomplishments in the field of transplantation surgery, the Nobel selection committee awarded Dr. Murray thirty-six years later it’s Prize in Medicine. Applicability of Research to Practice Dr. Murray’s legacy which began during his care of soldiers during WWII offers an inspiration to all those caring for patients who have sustained burn injuries.

Abstract. The presentation of financial statements reflected by opinion of intern auditor (Itdam) and external auditor (BPK). Audit result show there are still many army hospitals which have not yet attained  WTP opinion. The variables in this study consist of independent variables: employee competence (X1), information technology (X2), and internal control system (X3). On the other hand, the dependent variable is the presentation of financial statement (Y). This is a quantitative research using non probability sampling with census sampling method. The value of the coefficient of determination shows that employee competence, information technology, and internal control system simultaneously contribute to the presentation of financial statement. Partially test results show that information technology and internal control system influence significantly the quality of financial statement. Employee competence does not influence significantly the presentation of financial statement. Keywords: Presentation of Financial Statement, Employee Competence, Information Technology, and Internal Control System.Abstrak. Penyajian laporan keuangan rumah sakit TNI AD tercermin dari opini auditor internal (Itdam) maupun eksternal (BPK) atas laporan keuangan rumah sakit TNI AD.

The Army Nurse Corps established a Transition to Practice Program (TPP) to better position Army NPs to excel in complex clinical environments. The purpose of the TPP was to provide a structured educational transition to clinical practice for new graduate Advance Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs). A small pilot (test-of-change) was conducted at two Army hospitals. The results of the pilot indicated that length of time was the most important factor for the program. Findings during this pilot implementation were limited, but provide great insight into revising the program in order to produce skilled and confident Army APRNs.
