The article considers the role of punctuation marks in delivering and perceiving the purport in fiction discourse. The core of the study is the interrelation between the punctuation arrangement of the text and its prosodic embodiment. Contemporary English fiction in both written and audio forms is exploited as the material for the investigation. The key goal of the study is to demonstrate the so-called ‘highlighting function’ of the semicolon (the stop of inner controversy) and to analyse its role in emphasising the text fragments of special prominence. Three major types of the function are discussed: bringing out particularization to follow, which appears to be vital for interpreting the purport; marking off the afterthought; bringing out the ‘effective’ conclusion - a concise and catchy phrase summing up the previous statement. The results show that in all the three contexts in which the semicolon signals the information significance, its typical prosody gets modified. Namely, the part of the sentence after the stop is largely produced in the higher section of the diapason as compared to the recommended parameter. Among other prosodic characteristics to be altered are timbre and tempo. Adding more expressivity not infrequently may enable the performer to highlight the clause to follow.

AbstractBackgroundThe following position statement from the Union of the European Phoniatricians, updated on 25th May 2020 (superseding the previous statement issued on 21st April 2020), contains a series of recommendations for phoniatricians and ENT surgeons who provide and/or run voice, swallowing, speech and language, or paediatric audiology services.ObjectivesThis material specifically aims to inform clinical practices in countries where clinics and operating theatres are reopening for elective work. It endeavours to present a current European view in relation to common procedures, many of which fall under the aegis of aerosol generating procedures.ConclusionAs evidence continues to build, some of the recommended practices will undoubtedly evolve, but it is hoped that the updated position statement will offer clinicians precepts on safe clinical practice.

In this article, the authors successfully created two new plugins one for Autopsy Forensic Tool, and the other for Volatility Framework. Both plugins are useful for encoding digital evidences in Forensic Lucid which is the goal of this work. The first plugin was integrated in Autopsy to generate a report for the case of a Brute Force Authentication attack by looking for evidence in server logs based on a key search. On the other hand, the second plugin named ForensicLucidDeviceTree aims to find whether a device stack has been infected by a root-kit or not expression is implied by the previous statement. The results of both plugins are shown in Forensic Lucid Format and were successfully compiled using GIPC compiler.

The article is devoted to a separate variety of statements: statements reporting the content of other statements. The author refers to this type of speech as ‘retelling’ (Russian: pereskaz) and points to its use in presenting the content of literary works, journalistic texts, various cultural texts (film, opera, ballet, etc.) and, less frequently, also spoken statements. One typical where these forms occur are headlines reporting on the content of the following text and stage directions. ‘Retelling’ is characterized by specific ways of using the forms of the perfective and imperfective aspects of the verb and the use of temporal forms of the verb, different from the usual dependence of tenses (such as ‘future in the past’). This is justified by their metatextual function. In these cases, there is a transition to the second or even third level of temporal deixis, when events are not presented (as opposed to a simple statement) from the point of view of the ‘here and now’ of the current sender but, instead, presented as elements of the reality already presented in the previous statement and reported from the perspective of its author or recipient/interpreter (who may assume different time perspectives vis-à-vis the content of the presented text). A thorough analysis of the material illustrating the ‘retelling’ in the article reveals specific cases of synonymy between different tense-aspect verb forms.

Using the usability principles brings benefits in the dissemination of information in web environments improving users' cognitive processes and linked to responsive web techniques forming interfaces with clearer and more effective interactivity. This paper describes the interlinkages between concepts that corroborate with the previous statement, through the redesign of the site frontend for the master's degree program GESTEC (locus of development of this research). Methodologically, applied research is used with a research-action approach for evaluation and results generation. At the end of the processes of construction of the site, considering the criteria and subsidiary parameters, it is noticed that the new layout enhances the interaction characteristics for the users, simplifying access to information.

This paper explains about a comparison between assistive video for hearing-impaired learners (AV4HI) and assistive courseware for hearing-impaired learners (AC4HI).  The rationale is that previous statement was made after learners experience normal courseware, not the courseware specifically designed for them.  Hence, perhaps if the courseware is designed special for them, the hearing-impaired learners would experience differently, and behave more positive upon the AC4HI.  Hence, this paper aims at describing the execution of the comparison.  It involves a 3-stage process: designing the AC4HI, developing the AC4HI, and user experience.  In the end, it was found that users are happy with both, but in terms of content acquisition, they prefer to have notes in the learning material.

Technology has widely absorbed into daily life. In fact, various technologies have been carried out in supporting teaching and learning. In conjunction to that, this paper explains about a comparison between two technologies for hearing-impaired learners in their learning purpose. The technologies are assistive video for hearing-impaired learners (AV4HI) and assistive courseware for hearing-impaired learners (AC4HI).

This research focuses on the study of the types of code switching and the reasons for lecturers to use the code switching that is based on Wardaugh’s theory and supported by Gumperz. The data was collected by using field method, with several steps, namely: following the lecturer, recording techniques, field recording, and interviews. From several data were examined, it was found three types of code switching. Conversations type is a type of code switching that often appear, followed by the type of situational and metaphorical. In addition, it was found seven reasons for the use of code switching in teaching and learning, namely the influence of students who first use the Indonesian language, ignorance of the students to the lecturers’ explanation , the emphasis on the previous statement, search the attention of the students because they make noise in the classroom, liquefaction the tense atmosphere with a little joke, forgetfulness some of the terms in English, and no equivalent word in English when giving an example of a lesson.

LABURPENA: Botere publiko guztiak legeen mende egotea da Zuzenbide-estatu demokratikoen ezaugarrietako bat. Epaileei eta tribunalei dagokionez, aurreko adierazpen horrek ez du zalantzarik sortzen; praktikan, baina, epai judizial asko hartzen diren legetik kanpora, interpretatzeko orduan zalantzarik sortu gabe. Artikulu honetan aztertzen dut ea hori eszeptizismo semiotiko batean oinarritzen den eta hori jasangarria den teorikoki, edo, aldiz, arauen esanahiak mugak dituen. Bigarren aukeraren alde egiten dut, eta muga hori hizkuntzaren izaera konbentzionalak ematen duela adierazten dut. ABSTRACT: The submission of every public authority to the laws is a characteristic of the democratic states based on the rule of law. As far as judges and courts are concerned, the previous statement does not cast doubt; nevertheless in practice there are often judicial decisions that although without any interpretative doubt, are adopted outside the law. In this article I analyze whether it is based on a semiotic scepticism and is theoretically sustainable or on the contrary the meaning of norms has limits. I am inclined for this second option noting that that limit is given by the conventional character of the language.
