“Byzantium on the Volga”: To the Anniversary of Nikolay D. Barabanov

This brief sketch written to the 65th anniversary of Nikolay D. Barabanov, Candidate of Historical Sciences, lecturer at Volgograd State University, specialist in the Byzantine history, medieval folk religion researcher is devoted to his life, scientific and educational activity. The article also presents the publication of complete bibliographic information about the scientist’s works beginning in 1977, or from his learning period.

Bibliographic Information in the Theatre Magazine Artist

The theatre magazine Artist has repeatedly become an object of scientific research. However, despite the wealth of works with a focus on structure of the magazine, the bibliographic section of Artist remains insufficiently studied. The bibliographic information of the journal has not yet become an object of subject-specific research. The empirical basis of the study is a complete set of publications of the theater magazine Artist for the entire period of its existence. Primary attention is paid to the bibliographic section of the journal and the appendix. Research methods are theoretical and historical analysis, generalization and systematization of the results obtained. In the proposed article, the author describes and comprehends the main forms of latent bibliographic information in the theatrical magazine Artist, first of all, the independent section Bibliography. The study defines main thematic areas of the section, its structure and main genres. The author also analyzes the types of bibliographic advertising in the journal: alphabetical directories of plays allowed to be performed, index of plays suitable for amateur shows, announcements on subscription from magazine editors, advertising of new books, ads for subscriptions to other print media. The author comes to the conclusion that along with educational intentions, the magazine staff solved specific selling tasks (sale of the magazine and books distributed through the publishers office). The latent bibliographic information of Artist can be useful for specialists interested in history of literature, journalism and theatre.

Elaborations : a selective annotated bibliography of reviews and commentaries on the poetry and short stories of Bill Manhire from 1967 to 2002

<p>Bill Manhire is one of New Zealand's most well-known writers, with a career that spans more than 30 years. His work has received little bibliographic attention, with available resources being incomplete or providing minimal descriptions. This bibliography aims to redress this gap in coverage through the inclusion of additional media types such as archives, encyclopaedia extracts, sound and video recordings, and web pages. In addition, it adds value to previous work done in this area by correcting errors, providing additional bibliographic information, and annotations. Citations and annotations are included for all items which fulfil the aim of providing significant comment on, or insight to the poetry and short stories of Bill Manhire. Citations are grouped by collection title, general works, and pieces written by Manhire himself. This bibliography will be useful to researchers, students, journalists and interested members of the public.</p>

The books and booklets on librarianship published in post-Soviet Russia (1992–2020 bibliological review)

The publishing business in post-Soviet Russia differs a lot from that of the Soviet period. The number of books and brochures has significantly increased, though the circulations have drastically decreased, which is evidenced by the national press statistics without interpreting indicators related to the subject. After USSR’s collapsed, many complete and reliable resources have appeared to study librarianship publishing repertoire in various aspects, e. g.: target readership of publications, their target audience, publishing chronology, main publishers; circulations. With these criteria, expert assessment of key publishing repertoire components is made. The Russian Book Chamber databases based on acquired mandatory copies of publications, as well as Rosinforkultura, Institute of scientific Information for Social Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences, largest library catalogs and several bibliographic catalogs and indexes on the subject under examination, make the main source of statistical and bibliographic information for the authors. The authors identify the main problems and trends in librarianship publishing so to change situation to the better. The authors also focus on publication identification elements, i. e. their imprint.

The Case of the Missing Disciple: Abū l-Ḥasan al-Rustughfanī and the First Reception of al-Māturīdī’s Theology in Samarqand

Despite recognition of Abū l-Ḥasan al-Rustughfanī (d. ca. 345/956) as the most important student of Abū Manṣūr al-Māturīdī (d. 333/944), a sustained treatment of his theological views has not hitherto appeared. One of the challenges that has been identified in prior studies is a lack of primary sources. To overcome this obstacle, I analyse manuscripts of “Bāb al-mutafarriqāt min fawāʾid” and “al-Asʾila wa-l-ajwiba,” two texts recording al-Rustughfanī’s theological responsa, locating them within available bibliographic information and discussing the question of literary structure. I then contextualise the material within the polemical milieu of mid-fourth/tenth century Samarqand, arguing that al-Rustughfanī is the earliest figure in the Samarqandī Ḥanafī kalām tradition to self-consciously adopt the full name ahl al-sunna wa-l-jamāʿa to express his theological identity. Finally, I provide an annotated theological overview of the main doctrines found in the texts with a detailed case study on divine speech and the Qurʾān, showing how al-Rustughfanī bridges the gap between al-Māturīdī’s rationalistic kalām and the Ḥanafī traditionalism of al-Ḥakīm al-Samarqandī (d. 342/953).
