Barrier knock-down weir as an alternative technology for irrigation

Sand bags are one of the technologies still widely used to elevate water level. The sand bags are arranged in order to dam the river flow and to irrigate agricultural land, especially during the dry season. In line with its utilization, water supply of this technology is still less effective, thus, alternative technology is needed. This study aimed to test Barrier Knock-Down as an alternative technology that can be assembled and stored. This study was a quantitative research conducted by testing the prototypes. The tests were carried out using a monitor instrument Diver, piezometer. The tests of comparison were conducted in 4 types: Type 1, it was an L shape filled with sand+water; Type 2 was I shape filled with sand+water; Type 3 was an I shape filled with water; Type 4 was in an L shape filled with water. From the results of the study, type 1 is the best method for weir irrigation technology because of its ability to resist vertical and horizontal force than other types. Type 1-an L shape filled with sand+water with the value of safety factor rolling stability 5,28 and shear stability 2,23. Experiment result a stable elevation value in weir, did not experience a shift.

A Comparison of Waterproof Motor Housings for Student Robotics Teams

Professionals and students alike create high-performance Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV)s to complete a multitude of tasks underwater. The student ROV competition created by Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) simulates the tasks faced by the modern professional underwater robotics industry. Students often design their ROVs with techniques used by the professional underwater robotics industry. Unlike professionals, students do not have many resources comparing manufacturable ROV components that fit within their design restrictions. Without information about components that they choose to use on their ROVs, students might miss an opportunity to implement a better alternative technology. Such is the case with older Shaft Sealed Housings (SSH) and less common Magnetically Coupled Housings (MCH). In this paper, essential aspects of both alternative designs for waterproof motor housings are tested to determine overall performance. The waterproofness of each housing is tested experimentally over long periods of time in an environment simulating the most extreme depths experienced at the MATE ROV Competition. Maximum static torque is measured on a torque sensor. Cost and manufacturability of each housing are recorded in tables. Ultimately, student robotics teams are left to determine which motor housing best fits their design requirements, based on the data discovered and presented in this paper.

Wearable Detection of Trunk Flexions: Capacitive Elastomeric Sensors Compared to Inertial Sensors

Continuous monitoring of flexions of the trunk via wearable sensors could help various types of workers to reduce risks associated with incorrect postures and movements. Stretchable piezo-capacitive elastomeric sensors based on dielectric elastomers have recently been described as a wearable, lightweight and cost-effective technology to monitor human kinematics. Their stretching causes an increase of capacitance, which can be related to angular movements. Here, we describe a wearable wireless system to detect flexions of the trunk, based on such sensors. In particular, we present: (i) a comparison of different calibration strategies for the capacitive sensors, using either an accelerometer or a gyroscope as an inclinometer; (ii) a comparison of the capacitive sensors’ performance with those of the accelerometer and gyroscope; to that aim, the three types of sensors were evaluated relative to stereophotogrammetry. Compared to the gyroscope, the capacitive sensors showed a higher accuracy. Compared to the accelerometer, their performance was lower when used as quasi-static inclinometers but also higher in case of highly dynamic accelerations. This makes the capacitive sensors attractive as a complementary, rather than alternative, technology to inertial sensors.

Soybean Cultivation Technology Package on Tidal Swamp Lands in Indonesia

The main constraints of the tidal swamp lands in Indonesia for soybean growth are low soil pH, high Al saturation, and low nutrient availability of N, P, K, Ca, and Mg. The objectives of this research were to determine tolerance of several soybean varieties to Al saturation level, and to obtain a technological package for soybean cultivation which was suitable for farmers to adopt on tidal swamp lands. The research consisted of two stages of study. The first stage formulated of technology package, and the second stage evaluated feasibility of the technology package which was formulation from the first stage. The first stage studied the effect of dolomite application (20% - 30% of soil Al saturation) on four soybean varieties (Anjasmoro, Panderman, Dega 1, and Demas). The second stage studied the effect of three technological packages: existing technology; water- saturated soybean cultivation (WSC); and alternative technology which was formulated from the results of the first study. In the 30% of soil Al saturation condition, the alternative technology package (application of 50 kg urea + 75 kg SP36 + 50 kg KCl + 1500 kg organic fertilizers/ha + rhizobium biofertilizer “Agriosy” 0.25 kg/50 g seeds/ha) gave soybean yield of 1.78 - 2.72 t/ha for all of soybean varieties tested. The alternative technology package with Anjasmoro variety provided higher seed yields (2.62 t/ha) compared to the existing technology (2.07 t/ha) and WSC technology package (2.44 t/ha). The alternative technology package gave a profit of 11,595,000 IRD/ha with B/C values of 1.71 which was higer than the existing and WSC technology packages. The alternative technology package was more profitable than the existing technology (current farmer practice) and water-saturated soybean cultivation technology packages.

Unlock Mono-Trip Gas Lift Completions Limits by using a New Cement-Through Packer and a Sliding Sleeve with Radio Frequency Identification Capability

Gas lift is one of the most appropriate artificial lift methods for Gulf of Thailand (GOT) oil operations. As first described in Chapman, W. R. (2005), Mono-trip gas lift (MTGL) completions have continuously improved since their implementation in the early 2000s, increasing recovery by over 15%. MTGL completions enable marginal or sub-economic new wellhead platforms (WHPs) or infill projects to become economical. To overcome the more challenging wellbore environment in which the current technology is unable to be utilized, alternative technology was trialed in 2019 to enhance the MTGL completion without sacrificing the wellbore designs or reserves.
