Abstract Ionic liquids as anticorrosion agents have a wide spectrum of unique properties, which make them less harmful than the majority of typical organic corrosion inhibitors in antifreeze. The synthesis of ionic liquids enables them to be provided with the desired physicochemical and thermodynamical properties by the appropriate selection of cations, anions, and alkyl substituents on the cations. The aim of this paper is the synthesis of the gemini ionic salt (ionic liquid) made up of two imidazole rings with a linear alkyl substituent with 10 carbon atoms, bonded by a 1,4-dimethylphenyl moiety. Such compounds are studied in view of steel protection against oxidizing and corrosive effects. The compound was obtained in a satisfactory yield.

Infrastructures in coastal area are mostly made of metal which is susceptible to corrosion due to direct contact with the seawater. The Seawater greatly affects the corrosion rate of metals because it contains chloride ions which can penetrate metal surface. The process of corrosion can be inhibited or slowed by decreasing the corrosion rate in one way, namely the addition of corrosion inhibitors derived from natural materials containing tannin compounds. This study proposed organic corrosion inhibitors which were derived from natural material extracts (coffee leaves and catappa leaves), the effect of time variations on the efficiency of organic inhibitors was investigated, and the efficiency of each inhibitor organic was compared. The corrosion rate with and without inhibitors was analysed by using the method of weight loss. The results showed that the corrosion rate can be reduced by adding the natural ingredients extract. The addition of 2% concentration coffee leaves extract resulted in the lowest corrosion rate with the addition of 0.00226 mmpy. The addition of catappa leaves extract concentration as much as 2% yield the lowest corrosion rate with the addition of 0.0012 mmpy. The highest efficiency of inhibition system was obtained by using 2% catappa leaves extract at 14 days soaking time at 69.23%, and the lowest by using 1% coffee leaves extract.

Corrosion is a major challenge in construction technology and manufacturing industry. It does not only reduce the aesthetics of a building but also weakens the structure. Structural weakness caused by rust leads to the reduction in the durability of reinforced concrete.  Various efforts and research ranging from prevention to maintenance process are being carried out globally to overcome this problem. Due to the increased awareness of the importance of preserving the environment for health and ecological system, studies are increasingly focused on the use of environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitor. This paper discusses several conditioning methods of using organic corrosion inhibitors in concrete reinforcement. It also takes a close look at the effect of every conditioning method towards the reinforced concrete strength and the mechanism to improve it. The migrating and admixed corrosion inhibitors (MCI) conditioning methods is considered as the best solution so far to enhance corrosion resistance performance that contributes to superior reinforced concrete mechanical strength.

Metal corrosion is a grave problem, having deleterious effects on human health, the economy, the environment, and many engineering schemes, for example, automobiles, aircraft, naval vessels, and pipelines. For the confirmation of enduring reliability and stability of alloys and metals, corrosion-protective surfaces are of the greatest significance, for example, ions and water, through restraining their interactions with corrosive species. Though, their applied submissions are frequently bounded whichever through deprived mechanical robustness or else through the incapability to resist low surface tension liquids, for example, alcohols and oil. In this chapter, we have focused on diverse materials as sustainable corrosion inhibitors such as organic corrosion inhibitors, green corrosion inhibitors, and polymer-based corrosion inhibitors to protect materials from being corroded. Amongst them, we especially focus on green corrosion inhibitors as a consequence of simple manufacturing, easy availability, cost-effectiveness, and biodegradable nature.

Metals play a pivotal role in industry; their use constantly grows. It is virtually impossible to find an industrial field without the use of metals and their alloys. However, owing to the quality degradation of metal during the operational process, corrosion appears not only on its surface but also under a coating, which leads to its destruction. To avoid this, corrosion inhibitors are necessary. Organic compounds have been widely used as corrosion inhibitors. Many organic corrosion inhibitors have been developed nowadays. In the literature, organic compounds comprising N, O, S and P heteroatoms are described, which reduce corrosion rate. The organic compounds are adsorbed on the metal surface, forming a thin layer. Adsorption occurs either through electrostatic interaction or, in some cases, the formation of covalent bonds. The work aimed to study isothiuronic salts as corrosion inhibitors to evaluate their protective properties using the polarisation curves method. Objects of research were isothiuronic compounds containing two active centres separated by saturated and unsaturated carbon bonds (structures 1-3). In structures 4-7, one isothiuronic fragment has different propylene substituting groups. It has been previously shown that these compounds can act as effective brightening agents when applying nickel coatings. A model solution with a density of 1.12 g/cm3 was prepared to study the corrosion inhibitors. The corrosion inhibitor concentration was 400 mg/L. Studies have shown that the compounds with two isothiuronic moieties do not always exhibit improved properties for inhibiting metal degradation in a corrosive environment. In particular, they showed worsening of the inhibiting properties for samples made of steel 20 and identical properties for that made of steel 3.
