Abstract Nanotechnology is a completely unique branch of technology that offers with substances in a very small size between (1-100 nm) with various crystal shapes which include spherical nanoparticles, flower shaped, Nano rods, Nano ribbons, and Nano platelets. Metals have ability to produce large number of oxides. These metal oxides play an major role in many areas of chemistry, physics, material science and food science. In this research, Zinc Oxide (ZnO) and Copper (II) oxide nanoparticles were synthesized via sol-gel process using zinc nitrate and copper (II) nitrate as precursor respectively. The characterization of CuO and ZnO nanoparticles was done by using various techniques. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) indicates the crystallinity and crystal size of CuO and ZnO nanoparticle. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) was used to get the infrared spectrum of the sample indicating composition of the sample which contains various functional groups. XRD result shows the particle size of CuO at highest peak 29.40140 was 61.25 nm and the particle size of ZnO at highest peak 36.24760 was 21.82 nm. FT-IR spectra peak at 594.56 cm-1 indicated characteristic absorption bands of ZnO nanoparticles and the broad band peak at 3506.9 cm-1 can be attributed to the characteristic absorption of O-H group. The analysis of FT-IR spectrum of CuO shows peaks at 602.09, 678.39, and 730.19cm−1 which refer to the formation of CuO. A broad absorption peak noticed at 3308.2 cm−1 attributed to O–H stretching of the moisture content.

The structure of mammoth tusk was investigated by infrared spectroscopy, including after heat treatment. The whole complex of functional groups of the tusk components - hydroxyapatite, collagen and water - was revealed. It was found that collagen in the IR spectrum is represented mainly by characteristic absorption bands of amide and aliphatic groups. After heat treatment at 600 °C, the organic part is completely removed from the sample. It was found that hydroxyapatite in mammoth tusk is presented in a carbonate-substituted form, however, heat treatment at 900 °C leads to the removal of carbonate anion and water from the sample, which is accompanied by the transition of hydroxyapatite from the nonstoichiometric state to the stoichiometric state.

In this paper, chitooligosaccharides in different salt forms, such as chitooligosaccharide lactate, citrate, adipate, etc., were prepared by the microwave method. They were characterized by SEM, FTIR, NMR, etc., and the nitric oxide (NO) expression was determined in RAW 264.7 cells. The results showed that pure chitooligosaccharide was an irregular spherical shape with rough surface, and its different salt type products are amorphous solid with different honeycomb sizes. In addition to the characteristic absorption peaks of chitooligosaccharides, in FTIR, the characteristic absorption of carboxyl group, methylene group, and aromatic group in corresponding acid appeared. The characteristic absorption peaks of carbon in carboxyl group, hydrogen and carbon in methyl, methylene group, and aromatic group in corresponding acid also appeared in NMR. Therefore, the sugar ring structure and linking mode of chitooligosaccharides did not change after salt formation of chitooligosaccharides. Different salt chitooligosaccharides are completely different in promoting NO secretion by macrophages, and pure chitooligosaccharides are the best.

Abstract An attempt was made to synthesize zinc oxide gum white nanoparticles (ZnO-GWNPs) by the greenway approach using Aegle marmelos (Bael fruit) juice extract as a capping and reducing agent. Synthesis of ZnO-GWNPs by greener approach is safer, more economical, more energy-efficient, eco-friendlier, and less toxic than chemically synthesized counterparts. The optical properties of the ZnO-GWNPs were ascertained through UV-Vis spectroscopy, Fourier Transform-Infrared (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), High-resolution transmittance electron microscopy (HRTEM). A characteristic absorption peak at 385nm confirmed the presence of ZnO-GWNP using UV-Vis spectroscopy. FTIR spectrum revealed that the characteristic absorption peak of the Zn-O bond was observed at 467 cm-1. The XRD result for the ZnO showed the tendency of the three most intense diffraction peaks. The average crystallite size ZnO NPs at scattering angle (2θ) 22.89 and 32.15 was 39.14 and 26.08 nm and it showed the presence of miller indices of (100), (002), (101), (102) respectively. The EDX spectrum gave strong signals for zinc and oxygen indicating the occurrence of the nanoparticles in their oxide form rather than the pure zinc form. The SEM image showed the surface morphology of ZnO-GW NPs and the HR-TEM image showed the crystalline nature of ZnO-GW NPs. Cytotoxicity study of ZnO-GW NPs was determined against MCF-7 cell lines and the IC50 values were found to be 40 µg/mL and 60 µg/mL at 24 h and 48 h respectively.

The plastic objects from our cultural heritage are material testimonies of our history, technology and industry. Still, in Portugal, there is no museum of plastics, and the collections are spread through private collectors and industries. The research project, 'The Triumph of Bakelite - Contributions to a History of Plastics in Portugal', aims at creating this museum. To this end, the research work gave rise to the exhibition, 'Plasticity - A History of Plastics in Portugal', in Museu de Leiria in 2019. This study focuses on the contribution of conservation science for the writing of this history and preparation of ca. 150 historical plastic objects for display. Bakelite, melamine, polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene and plasticized polyvinyl chloride are just a few examples of the polymers identified by infrared spectroscopy. This identification was crucial to tell the history of the plastics industry in Portugal. Both the spectra and characteristic absorption bands of each polymer are presented.

The ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectra of the aqueous solutions of humic acids (HA) Aldrich were obtained within the concentration range 1–20 mg/L (0.1–2ċ10–6 mol/L). A conclusion on the existence of the self-association (dimer formation) of HA macromolecules is based on the deviation of the concentration dependence of optical density (OD) from the linear one at [HA] > 10 mg/L (>10–6 mol/L). An original, mathematical algorithm is proposed to determine a dimerization constant K and a molar coefficient of dimer absorption [Formula: see text] The value of K was (2.56 ± 0.07) ċ 106 L/mol. The calculated molar coefficients of HA macromolecule dimer absorption, [Formula: see text], indicate an increase in the dimer extinction coefficient [Formula: see text] compared to the double value of the molar monomer absorption 2[Formula: see text]. It was established that the spectral dependence of the value β = [Formula: see text]/[Formula: see text] exhibits a minimum within a wavelength range of 300–450 nm, which is due to the difference in the efficiency of the interaction of various sites upon HA macromolecule dimerization. Thus, an approach of studying the processes of self-association is proposed using the method of UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy. This method is implemented for molecules that do not have characteristic absorption bands. The proposed method can also be successfully applied to molecules with characteristic absorption bands.

Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) is an effective coherent detection technique for deeply understanding the structures and functions of biomolecules. However, generally not full information in the whole THz range can be obtained due to the limited detection bandwidth (usually less than 5 THz) of the traditional THz-TDS systems. In this paper, effective THz absorption spectra in 0.5–10 THz range of five typical nucleobases of DNA/RNA are characterized with a super broadband THz detection technique, called the air-biased- coherent-detection (THz-ABCD) technique. Few unexpected characteristic absorption peaks appeared in the low-frequency region and meanwhile a series of anticipated characteristic absorption peaks are found in the high-frequency region. The fingerprint spectra of these nucleobases are helpful for further analysis on the vibration and twisting behavior of hydrogen bonds, van der Waals and electrostatic forces etc. between and within DNA/RNA biomolecules.
