Is Mr. Hyde more similar to his alter ego Dr. Jekyll, because of their physical identity, or to Jack the Ripper, because both evoke fear and loathing? The relative weight of emotional and visual dimensions in similarity judgements is still unclear. We expected an asymmetric effect of these dimensions on similarity perception, such that faces that express the same or similar feeling are judged as more similar than different emotional expressions of same person. We selected 10 male faces with different expressions. Each face posed one neutral expression and one emotional expression (five disgust, five fear). We paired these expressions, resulting in 190 pairs, varying either in emotional expressions, physical identity, or both. Twenty healthy participants rated the similarity of paired faces on a 7-point scale. We report a symmetric effect of emotional expression and identity on similarity judgements, suggesting that people may perceive Mr. Hyde to be just as similar to Dr. Jekyll (identity) as to Jack the Ripper (emotion). We also observed that emotional mismatch decreased perceived similarity, suggesting that emotions play a prominent role in similarity judgements. From an evolutionary perspective, poor discrimination between emotional stimuli might endanger the individual.

Kata kunci: kualitas pelayanan, kepuasan pelanggan, cafe ABSTRACTThe culinary business in the form of a cafe that is mushrooming at this time makes business owners think hard to make their café different from the others so that it can attract customers to come, one of which is Mabar & Game Coffee. Researchers want to see if there is an influence between service quality on customer satisfaction at Mabar & Game Coffee. This research uses descriptive quantitative research method with variable X consisting of, variable X1 is physical identity, variable X3 is organizational management, variable X2 is non-physical identity, variable X5 is activity and relationship patterns, variable X4 is quality of results, and variable Y is customer satisfaction. The data analysis technique used is multiple linear regression, calculating the hypothesis using the F test and t test where the F test is to determine the simultaneous effect between the X to Y variables, while the t test is to determine the partial effect of the X to Y variables. SPSS, it was found that variable X which consists of physical identity, non-physical identity, organizational management, quality of results, activities and relationship patterns have a simultaneous influence on variable Y, namely customer satisfaction. Meanwhile, from the calculation using the T test, it was found that non-physical identity is the most dominant variable, so that according to customers, Mabar & Game Coffee's non-physical identity greatly affects their satisfaction. Keywords: service quality, customer satisfaction, cafe

Given the global trends toward an aging society and the increased desire for healthy aging in late life, this study examines older adults’ perceptions of aging and their physical identity through their engagement in physical activities. Adopting a grounded theory, we interviewed 15 individuals aged 65 years and older, who were involved in physical activities on a regular basis. This study provided a final model depicting (a) divergent and convergent modes of strategies and socioemotional aspects of physical identity development in later life and (b) different strategies employed between younger-old versus older-old age groups and between participants who have underlying health conditions and those who do not. These findings add a contextual explanation of identity development in later life and stress the recurring process of physical identity development.

AbstractIntroductionThe delusion of being a living animate non-animal object has not heretofore been reported.MethodsA 21-year-old right-handed cisgender female, two months prior to presentation, noted stiffness and difficulty with ambulation. One-month prior to admission, she experienced recurrent depression with myriad vegetative and nonvegetative symptoms of depression. On admission her chief complaint was I am a tree, standing motionless and minimally responding to query. After treatment with quetiapine, mirtazapine and hydroxyzine for a one-week period, her perception of being a tree fully resolved.ResultsAbnormalities in Mental Status Examination: Anxious mood repeatedly stating, I am a tree. Standing still for long periods of time, refusing blood pressure to be obtained and expressing fear of constricting flow. Neuropsychiatric Testing: Beck Depression Inventory Type II: 33 (severe depression)DiscussionThe rapid response to risperidone is consistent with Cotard’s syndrome, which has been noted to respond rapidly to neuroleptics (Sharma, 2014). However, in Cotard’s syndrome, replacement by a living non-animal object has not hitherto been reported. Body infestation with animate objects, as in Ekbom syndrome, only includes animals not botanicals (Chaudhary, 2019). This could be viewed as Reverse Inanimate Capgras Syndrome: instead of an imposter replacing a close friend, who then is inserted into the sufferer; a tree has replaced the sufferer. Peradventure, this may fit into the construct of Intermetamorphosis, a misidentification syndrome associated with the belief that individuals have transformed into other persons (Jariwala, 2017). Botanical Intermetamorphosis, the belief by the sufferer that the other individual is transformed from a person into a plant has not been described. Reverse Intermetamorphosis is the projection of an external individual into the person suffering or a syndrome of altered physical and psychological identities of the self (Silva, 1990). However, in this situation, the objects are all human or animate animals not botanicals. In Fregoli syndrome, there is an altered physical identity of others. In Reverse Fregoli syndrome, the sufferer assumes the physical but not the psychological identity of the stranger (Silva, 1990). But in this instance, the stranger is human as opposed to a plant life form. In the current case there is only altered physical identity (into a tree) not psychological identity. The current case may also be interpreted as a Botanical Variant of Interparietal Syndrome. In this condition, parts of the body are perceived to be lifeless, due to lesions of the inferior parietal lobe including supramarginalis gyrus, angular gyrus and the basalis parietalis area (Angyal, 1935). Investigation for those whom have Intermetamorphosis, Fregoli syndrome, Capgras syndrome, Interparietal syndrome, and Cotard’s syndrome for the presence of delusions involving plant life is warranted.

This study ( N = 217) explores the potential for virtual reality to decrease social distance toward outgroup members among women. Raising the salience of individuals’ real physical identity through avatar customization and common ingroup identity manipulations was theorized to influence social distance. Participants who customized an avatar to resemble their real selves showed increased social distance. However, avatar customization also increased user identifiability, which was linked to reduced social distance. Priming a common ingroup identity increased identity salience but did not influence social distance. In examining heterogeneous effects by prior levels of issue involvement, participants with high and moderate involvement with immigration showed increased social distance after customizing an avatar to resemble their real selves, thus implying boomerang effects. The study discusses how avatar customization, identifiability, and common ingroup primes in virtual encounters may influence outgroup attitudes and intergroup relations.

This chapter discusses the transmission of collective memories of victimization in Northern Ireland to generations that did not experience the violence personally. Victim narratives are transmitted not only by family members, but also through physical identity markers in the community such as murals, memorials, graffiti, painted curbstones, flags, and parades. Through this transmission, the youth perceive a duty to remember and feel that it is now their turn to fight. The chapter discusses the role of collective memories and the more personal postmemories in contributing to a violent relapse of the conflict when new grievances trigger these memories and mobilize support for violence. However, violence is not the inevitable response to transmitted memories of collective victimization, and the chapter discusses how commemorations and community projects can challenge the transmitted collective memories, acknowledge less widely shared collective memories, and contribute to positive intergroup relations between former adversaries.
