Optimization of surface quality and machining time in micro-milling of glass

Purpose Glass is a brittle material produced from silica, which has fine material properties, Owing to its sophisticated material properties, glass has found wide application in various high-technological fields such as aviation, aerospace, communication, optics, biomedical and electronics. However, glass is known as difficult to machine material because of its tendency to brittle fracture during machining. This paper aims to investigate the effects of cutting parameters on surface quality and machining time during micro-milling of brittle glass components. Design/methodology/approach A comprehensive genetic algorithm-based optimization strategy is used for selection of process parameters such as cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut. Effectiveness of the proposed strategy is validated by conducting micro-milling cutting experiments on soda-lime glass material. Findings Results showed that the generated surface quality drastically decrease with increase in the amount of removed material. Lower depth of cut and feed rate result in less amount of cracks formed on machined surface. Also, it is observed that the increase in cutting speed results in better surface quality. Having desired surface quality in shorter machining time directly reduces energy consumed during manufacturing, which is reducing environmental impact of glass parts. Originality/value The novelty of this research work lies in simultaneously considering the effects of cutting speed, feed rate, depth of cut on surface quality and machining time for micro-milling operation of brittle glass material. The model is able to find optimum process parameters for high surface quality and minimum machining time.

Improving the shielding efficiency and weight reducing of the radio-absorbing coating by adding a matching layer

The spectra of complex permittivity of the composites consisting of rubber silicone compound and electroconductive fine-dispersed silver-coated copper powder were investigated. To enhance the effectiveness of the composite interaction with microwaves and reduction of its weight and dimensions characteristics two and three-layer constructions were produced. Matching layers were made of foam glass material with addition SiC and Fe3O4.

Effect of glass thickness on performance of double slope inward solar desalination still for fresh water production

This paper deals with the effect of thickness of glass material which covered on double slope solar desalination still, performance of the solar still affected by thickness of the glass, which result in to major heat losses in the system. Two inward double slope desalination still with different glass thickness were designed, constructed and experimentally tested their performance. The glasses are inclined 200 from the center of the still. The solar energy collecting area of still is 1m2.The result shows that the variation in glass thickness will affect the efficiency of the still, desalination still with 4mm thickness gives 48% higher fresh water productivity compare to 6mm glass thickness.

Design and Analysis of Suspension Strut in Automobile Vehicles

This research paper discusses about the design and analysis of suspension strut used in automotive industries. The main objective of this research is to study the suspension strut by modelling using solid works and then analysis have been performed using ANSYS by considering structural steel, carbon fiber and E-Glass material. Based on the results obtained from the analysis, comparison have been made for above materials to reduce the weight of the suspension strut to improve the life of the model. From the analysis results it can be concluded that it is possible to reduce the weight of suspension strut using composite materials. From the above study it can be concluded that glass fiber has performed well as compared to other materials which in turn increases the life of the suspension strut.
