Association between Negative Life Events on Mental Health and College Student Adjustment: A Mediated Moderating Effect

Objective: To explore the association between negative life events and college student adjustment and to explore the mediating and moderating effects of social support and grade level in the relationship between the two. Methods. The research was conducted with 1717 college students using the Adolescent Self-Rating Life Events Checklist (ASLEC), China College Student Adjustment Scale (CCSAS), and the Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS). Results. (1) Negative life events were significantly negative in correlation with adjustment and social support (r = −0.373, −0.174, Ps < 0.001), while social support was significantly positive in correlation with adjustment (r = 0.359, P < 0.001 ). (2) The main effects of negative life events, social support, and grade on adjustment were significant (effect = −0.190, P < 0.001 , 95% CI [−0.288∼−0.092]; effect = 0.307, P < 0.001 , 95% CI [0.265∼0.348]; effect = 0.163, P < 0.001 , 95% CI [0.126∼0.200]). (3) In the relationship between negative life events and adjustment, social support played a mediating role (effect = −0.054, 95% CI [−0.071∼−0.037]) and grade level played a moderating role (effect = −0.049, P = 0.009 , 95% CI [−0.085∼−0.012]). Conclusion. Negative life events, social support, and grade level affected college student adjustment, and social support networks for college students should be actively constructed and targeted education should be conducted according to different grade levels, which can promote college student adjustment.

“If I Hadn’t Had that Support System, I Think I Would Have Dropped Out by Now”: Parental Support in College and its Implications for Student Adjustment

Understanding college students’ perceptions of parental support and its impact on student adjustment have important implications for maximizing retention rates within higher education institutions. College students ( N = 53) participated in qualitative interviews focused on students’ perceptions of mothers’ and fathers’ support during college and its impact on college adjustment. Holistic coding interviews indicated three different classifications of parents based on levels of support: supportive, ambivalent, and unsupportive. Students indicated that their parents continued to be the main source of support and a key factor that supports their adjustment during the college years. In contrast, students who did not receive such support expressed having difficulties continuing working toward their degree. Students’ narratives also indicated that mothers and fathers provided support in different ways. These findings have important implications for practice, and in particular how high education institutions can promote adjustment and retention rates by encouraging parental engagement.

Starting Doctoral Dissertation Journey with a Solid Research Problem Statement – A Four Stage Framework

Aim/Purpose: Provide methodology suggesting steps to doctoral mentors to work with students in constructing their research problem statement in their dissertation. Background: Doctoral students face difficulties writing their dissertation and they begin by writing the research problem statement. Methodology: This paper uses a framework widely used to describe student adjustment to graduate studies in general and to doctoral program in particular. Contribution: This study provides a framework to mentors/advisors that is helpful in guiding the students to writing their research problem statement. Findings: Writing a research problem statement is difficult by itself. Following a methodological approach suggested in this study could help with writing it. Recommendations for Practitioners: A methodological approach in writing the dissertation is helpful to mitigate the difficulties of writing the dissertation. Our study tackles difficulties with writing the research problem statement. Recommendations for Researchers: More research needs to be done on methodological approach to writing the other sections in the dissertation. Investigating the Effect of Parent Participation on Quality of Life and Adjustment in Students

Objective: The aim of this study was The effect of parental participation on the quality of academic life and the Compatibility of students. Methods: The research method was descriptive and structural equations. The population of this study was male and female high school students in the fourth district of Tabriz in the academic year 2018-2019, which using Cochran's formula and random sampling method 371 people (172 girls and 119 boys). The instruments used included the Williams and Button quality of life questionnaire, Sinha and Singh adaptation questionnaire, and Fan and Williams academic conflict questionnaire. Data analysis using structural equation statistical test with Smart PLS.2 software was developed. Results: The results showed that there was a positive and significant relationship between parental participation and quality of academic life (r=96.969, t=10) and also between parental participation and student adjustment) (r=0.309, t=4). The structural equations also show that parental involvement plays a mediating role in students' quality of academic life and adjustment. Conclusion: Therefore, parental involvement can play an essential role in the quality of education and student adjustment.

Pengaruh Konseling Kelompok Pendekatan Behavioristik Terhadap Penyesuaian Diri Siswa

This study aims to determine the effect of behavioristic approach group counseling services on the adjustment of class VIII-4 students of MTs Negeri 2 Medan. This type of research is Quasi experimental design with Pre test-post test one group design. The population in this study were students of class VIII-4 MTs Negeri 2 Medan T.A. 2019/2020, amounting to 35 people. The sample in this study were 8 students of class VIII-4 with low levels of self-adjustment. The instrument used was a self-adjustment scale of 51 items with a total reliability of 0.465. From the calculation results, the pre-test score in the experimental group obtained an average of = 140 while the post-test data obtained an average of = 171. The data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test to see whether there was a significant effect of group counseling with a behavioristic approach in increasing student adjustment. From the results of the Wilcoxon test shows that the Wilcoxon level test obtained Jcount = 16 while Jtabel = 4.From the table the critical value J for the Wilcoxon cascade test for n = 8, α = 0.05 in accordance with the criteria for acceptance and rejection of the hypothesis, the hypothesis is accepted if Jhitung> Jtabel, namely Jhitung> Jtabel where 16> 4, from this calculation it can be seen that the treatment in the experimental group means that the hypothesis that says there is a significant effect of group counseling with a behavioristic approach on the adjustment of class VIII-4 students of MTs Negeri 2 Medan is acceptable
