Impacts of Monetary Policy on Stability of Commercial Banks – Evidence from Vietnam

Before 2009, most central banks conducted their monetary policy with the ultimate goals of promoting price stability, economic growth and full employment. However, the 2009 financial crisis demonstrated that these goals are not enough to maintain a stable financial arena. So, aside from those objectives, the objective of financial stability is also of interest to central banks when implementing monetary policy. In this study, the authors explore the influence of monetary policy on the stability of commercial banks in Vietnam – an emerging economy. The study uses the dataset of the Vietnamese commercial banks from 2008 to 2019, applying SGMM estimations and checking their robustness with a Bayesian approach. The results show that, in recent years, the SBV has effectively implemented monetary policy to ensure banks’ stability in Vietnam. In particular, money supply M2 has positively impacted the stability of commercial banks. Also, the results imply that the ratio of loan to total assets, the ratio of cost operating to income operating, as well as CPI, correlate negatively with bank stability. The study did not find any impact of bank size or GDP on bank stability during the research period. Based on these results, the SBV should manage an optimal level of money supply M2 to guarantee efficient economic operations in general and maintain bank stability in particular, and should avoid high inflation.

BANK CONCENTRATION AND BANKING STABILITY: EVIDENCE FROM EAGLE GROUP

The study was conducted to assess the impact of the banking sector's concentration on the banking system's stability in Emerging and growth-leading economies (EAGLEs). In addition, the study also analyzed the role of macroeconomic factors in bank stability. By applying Bayesian multivariate linear regression, the posterior probability results show that money supply growth and credit growth erode the soundness of the banking system. On the other hand, economic growth helps to improve banking stability, but this effect is not obvious; surprisingly, inflation also increases the banking stability of the Emerging and growth-leading economies. Finally, the study shows that the equity ratio to total assets has a reverse relationship with bank stability. Due to data limitations, this study has not yet examined the role of macroprudential policy instruments in maintaining banking stability. Hence, in future studies, besides the factors considered in this study, we should focus on analyzing the impact of macroprudential policy instruments on banking stability.

The Effect of Credit Risk and Liquidity Risk on Bank Stability

The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of credit risk and liquidity risk on bank stability. This study used the multiple regression analysis to determine the effect of credit risk and liquidity risk as the independent variables, with BOPO (Biaya Operasional Pendapatan Operasional), GDP (Gross Domestic Bruto), BI Rate as the control variables, on Bank Stability as the dependent variable. Using purposive sampling method to collected data from the list of banking companies in OJK (Otoritas Jasa Keuangan) from 2013 to 2017 consisting of 437 observations. The estimated results show that credit risk has a significant negative effect on bank stability, and liquidity risk has a significant negative effect on bank stability. Whereas in the control variable, GDP does not affect bank stability, BOPO has a significant negative effect on bank stability, and the BI-Rate does not affect bank stability. Fintech credit, bank regulations and bank performance: a cross-country analysis

PurposeThis study is the first to investigate whether fintech credit influences bank performance, considering the moderating impact of bank regulations.Design/methodology/approachThis study uses an aggregate dataset of 73 countries from 2013 to 2018 to examine the nexus between fintech credit, bank regulations and bank performance. For robustness tests, the authors introduce different proxies of fintech credit, perform sub-sample analysis and substitute control variables, as well as conduct their empirical strategy to tackle potential endogeneity issue.FindingsThe authors document some significant findings. First, the authors’ evidence implies that fintech credit tends to reduce bank profitability, while improving bank risk-related performance. This suggests that as fintech grows, it competes with banks and takes some share of profits, but it also benefits banks in terms of stability. Second, stricter regulations contribute positively to bank stability. Third, the authors argue that the impact of fintech credit on bank performance may depend on the degree of banking regulation, and find that fintech credit would impose a more positive influence on bank stability as more stringent banking regulation is present.Originality/valueThis study is the first to investigate whether fintech credit influences bank performance, considering the moderating impact of bank regulations. The findings imply that fintech credit tends to be more beneficial when bank regulations become stricter. Therefore, they bring relevant implications to the regulators, as well as bank and fintech managers with regard to the potential cooperation.

Bank maturity, income diversification, and bank stability

The purpose of this research is to examine the influence of bank life cycle or bank maturity on income diversification (ID) and stability. In addition, this research investigates the ID relationship with bank stability. Drawing on the dynamic resource-based view and modern portfolio theory, this research examines the influence of a paramount internal factor i.e. bank life cycle or bank maturity on income diversification (ID) and stability consequence. Data were collected from the Pakistani’s commercial banks’ financial statements over the period 2005 to 2019. This research relied on the fixed effect and generalized method of moments (GMM) model to empirically test the proposed relationships. Core findings of the research reveal that bank maturity leads to enhanced ID and ID strongly influences the bank stability consequence, moreover, research findings are robust to use different measures of bank stability and GMM estimation techniques. To the authors’ best knowledge, this research is the first to report specific evidence about bank maturity as an internal driver of income diversification and stability and advances the literature seeking to understand the determinants of ID. This research also shows managers to recognize the importance of internal drivers to diversify effectively into non-interest income, and how such an effective ID translates into stability consequence.

Stability in the banking industry and commodity price volatility: perspective from developing economies

PurposeThis paper aims to examine the effect of volatility in prices of internationally traded commodities (the backbone of most economies) on the stability of the banking industry from three main perspectives; bank liquidity reserves, overall bank risk and bank capital adequacy.Design/methodology/approachData were compiled from various sources for 30 emerging economies from 2002 to 2018 and were analyzed using the two-step system generalized method of moments estimation technique.FindingsThe study finds that all things being equal, the magnitude and direction of impact of commodity price volatility on bank stability among economies in Sub-Saharan African (SSA) depend on the type and nature of the commodity in question; and the bank stability proxy used. For instance, an increase in crude oil prices is found to foster stability in the banking industry (proxied by bank liquid reserves) but insignificant when stability in the banking industry is proxied using other banking sector parameters. Additionally, government effectiveness and corruption control have varying moderating influences on how volatility associated with prices of internationally traded commodities influence various proxies for banking industry stability.Originality/valueThis study highlights the effect of fluctuations in prices of key internationally traded commodities (adjusted for foreign exchange impact) that are important sources of revenue among economies in SSA on banking sector stability from liquidity, overall risk and capital adequacy perspectives. The influential role of governance in the relationship between volatility in the price of commodities and bank stability is also revealed by the study.
