Herbal Approaches for Alzheimer Disease: A Review

"Plague of the Twenty-First Century," or “Alzheimer disease” is anneuro-degenerative disease that influenced the world's elderly population. The prevalence of Alzheimer's disease is expected to increase to one hundred thirty-five million by 2050, with no treatment(s) currently available to cure or monitor the disease's progression. The current treatment(s) have lesscapability to manage symptoms or delay disease development, and they can cause serious side effects. The cost of overall treatment is high for both the patients and their caregivers or family members. As an example, there is an serious requirement to find safer alternative treatments for better management of Alzheimer's disease. The various Indian herbal medicines such as Centella asiatica,Celastruspaniculatus Curcuma longa, Clitoriaternatea,Bacopa monnieri, Withania somnifera, has been reviewed in this article. Eclipta alba, Desmodiumgangeticum, Evolvulusalsinoides, Moringa oleifera, and Convolvulus pluricaulis are among the plants that have shown promising effect in the treatment related to cognitive disability.

Anticancer activity of leaves extracts of Convolvulus pluricaulis and Mimosa rubicaulis (Lam.) by Brine Shrimp Lethality Bioassay

This study was subjected to investigate brine shrimp lethality bioassay of Convolvulus pluricaulis and Mimosa rubicaulis (Lam.) in different polarities of leaves extracts. Brine shrimp organisms were used to assess the cytotoxic activities of various polarities of leaves extracts while using brine shrimp lethality bioassay the cytotoxicity had been assessed and correlated with standard. Five concentrations (20, 50,100,200,500µg/ml) of each extract were used to find out the cytotoxicity. The Artemia salina lethality bioassay result was evaluated in terms of LC50 (lethality concentration).In each plant extracts into three replicates concentration naupli were added. After 24 h the surviving Artemia salina larvae were counted and LC50 was assessed. The cytotoxic activity of all polarities of extracts displayed activity within the value of LC50 (132.10–266.76 µg/ml) for Convolvulus pluricaulis and (213.86–279.47 µg/ml) for Mimosa rubicaulis (Lam.) Results revealed that the ethyl acetate extracts of Convolvulus pluricaulis and ethanolic extracts of Mimosa rubicaulis (Lam.) elicit significant activity compared to other extracts it indicated biologically active components are present in ethyl acetate and ethanolic extracts that could be accounted for its pharmacological effects.

An updated review on Shankhpushpi- As Medhya Rasayana

Shankhpushpi is a plant and known as best brain tonic medicine which is classified under four Medhya Rasayana by Acharya Charaka. It is also included as main ingredient in many herbal extractives or decoction-based brain tonics or memory boosting formulations. Various Ayurvedacharya have named it as manglayakusuma, ksheerpushpi, medhya etc. Shankhpushi is also comes under convolvulacea family indicated as Convolvulus pluricaulis. The Charaka Samhita, which is an ancient book of Ayurveda described the use of paste (kalka) as Medhya Rasayana. There are so many experimental, pharmacological, clinical studies done on Convolvulus pluricaulis revealed the promising results as neuroprotective, memory enhancer, and antianxiety properties. The studies analysed its chemical composition like convolidine, convolvine, confoline etc. and may help to stimulate the brain activities. In addition, the studies have shown other properties like diuretic, antioxidant, hypolipidemic, hypotensive, antiulcer, antipyretic which helps to manage the various disorders. The various dosage forms like powder, paste, syrup is prepared by using whole plant or different parts of plant as indicated in classical texts. The present review study on Shankhpushpi basically focused on the experimental or clinical studies done in the management of various ailments.

In-Vitro Anti-inflammatory Activity of Methanolic Extract of Convolvulus pluricaulis Choisy

Aim: In-Vitro Anti-inflammatory Activity of Methanolic Extract of Convolvulus pluricaulis Choisy. Material & Methods- The whole plant parts of Convolvulus pluricaulis Choisy were purchased from the local market. Whole plant materials were dried under shade and subjected to coarse powder for extraction process. Accurately weighed quantity of whole plant material was extracted using 95 % methanol by soxhlet apparatus for 72 h. Qualitative chemical tests of methanolic extracts were subjected to various chemical tests to detect various phytoconstituents. Solvent systems ethyl acetate: methanol: water (77:13:10) were found to be most satisfactory solvent system. After development of plates, they were air-dried and number of spots, color and Rf values were recorded. The % heamolysis was calculated by assuming the heamolysis produced by the control group as 100 %. Results: The preliminary phytochemical analysis revealed that different active constituent present in different extracts such as carbohydrates, proteins, amino acids, fat, oils, steroids, terpenoids, glycosides, alkaloids, tannins and other phenolics compounds. At a concentration of 500 µg/ml, the extract produced 71.59% protection of RBC haemolysis as compared with 72.73% produced by prednisolone. The methanolic extract of selected plant showed 39.70% inhibition. The Diclofenac sodium showed 55.88 % inhibition against denaturation of protein. Conclusion: In conclusion, it can be stated that the methanolic extract has beneficial effects in long lasting in membrane stabilizing method, inhibition of protein denaturation method and proteinase model.
