Abandoning Penal Substitution: A Patristic Inspiration for Contemporary Protestant Understanding of the Atonement

In recent decades, there has been a resurgent interest among Protestant theologians in the so-called Christus Victor theory of the atonement. Firmly grounded in patristic thought (esp. Irenaeus of Lyons), this understanding of the work of Christ was first studied and formulated by a Swedish Lutheran, Gustaf Aulén, in 1931. Recent works by Darby Kathleen Ray, J. Denny Weaver, Thomas Finger, Gregory Boyd, and others develop Aulén’s endeavor and present new versions of the Christus Victor model. These scholars directly or indirectly demonstrate that the main framework of the patristic understanding of atonement was more faithful to Scripture and less problematic in terms of dogma and ethics than the traditional Protestant penal substitution theory. A short analysis of contemporary versions of the Christus Victor motif shows that this model of atonement proves to be more relevant in responding to the challenges of today’s world by providing substantial background for Christian spiritual life and ethics.

GREGORY A. BOYD. CROSS VISION: HOW THE CRUCIFIXION OF JESUS MAKES SENSE OF OLD TESTAMENT VIOLENCE

Gregory Boyd is a theologian and senior pastor in the Twin Cities. This book follows up on his epic two-volume Crucifixion and the Warrior God. While more accessible than the major work, its more concise presentation of the subject will be enough to satisfy most readers. As one might expect, the subject arises out of theological and hermeneutical engagement with the Old Testament narrative and pastoral concerns.

Dalam salah satu ceramahnya tentang “The Second Apostolic Age,” Peter Wagner menegaskan bahwa kekristenan sedang berada dalam proses perubahan besar yang dikerjakan oleh Roh Kudus. “Kantong anggur lama” sedang diganti dengan yang “baru.” Perubahan itu menyangkut banyak hal. Salah satunya berhubungan dengan suatu “theological innovation” yang dilakukan oleh para sarjana seperti: Clark Pinnock, Gregory Boyd, John Sanders, dan sebagainya, dengan proposal “open theology” mereka. Menurutnya, Open Theology atau Open Theism ini yang sesuai dengan karakteristik kantong anggur baru. Pertanyaan yang menggoda untuk diajukan adalah apakah Wagner telah menimbang semua landasan teori yang dibangun Boyd sehingga ia dapat memastikan bahwa Open Theology dapat menjadi kerangka teologis yang tepat bagi gerakan Apostolik Baru atau Kedua? Secara khusus, apakah biblical warfare worldview (selanjutnya disingkat BWW) yang dikembangkan Boyd itu mendukung praktik yang umum dilakukan oleh para pelopor gerakan Apostolik Kedua atau Baru, yaitu, Doa Peperangan Rohani Tingkat Strategis (selanjutnya disingkat DPRTS)? Pertanyaan yang kedua ini yang akan digumuli dalam makalah ini sehingga tujuan dari makalah ini adalah untuk menemukan sejauh mana, secara konseptual, BWW a la Boyd mendukung praktik DPRTS. Makalah ini akan diakhiri dengan sebuah refleksi dan evaluasi dari sudut pandang injili yang alkitabiah dan sehat.
