An Attempt to Fill the Gap between the Architectural Studies and Conceptualization in Architectural Thesis Design Studio

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the application of a theoretical framework in the architecture thesis project to discover the effectiveness of the exercise on the thesis projects. It was common to observe that the students prepared the architectural thesis project with limited, unstructured, or disconnected studies to analysis, programming, and conceptualization phases. A theoretical framework model was tested to evaluate the effects on the learning outcomes of the students. The methodology of the research was designed based on structured observation and content analysis. The findings of the research reveal that the students perceive and understand the studies and the theoretical framework differently. The students demonstrated their theoretical framework with four categorical specifications including information, application, presentation, and communication. The information referred to data and structure of the organization, the application implied the relation between the data collection, analysis and other phases of the thesis project, the presentation illustrated how they applied graphical tools to illustrate the data, and communication revealed the interaction between the students and the panel of juries and participants. In conclusion, the theoretical framework connects the studies to the concept generation and opens a new door for the discussion of the architectural studies and lessons learnt between the panel of juries, the students, and peers. For an effective expectation from the theoretical framework outputs, detailed guidelines could harmonize the students’ outputs due to the varieties of the application, interpretation, and demonstration of the architectural theoretical frameworks.

Co-Designers Not Troublemakers

Players in Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs) generate long-standing histories with their characters, but cannot express or see traces of their adventures in the game worlds. We are interested in designing game systems where players shape and contribute their own narratives as game content. Study one designed and playtested three Virtual Tabletop Role-Playing Game (VTTRPG) prototypes where we found that structured, graphical representations of players' traces support co-design and narrative analysis. We also identified four categories of traces: environment, build, memory and object. We introduce Play Traces, a novel analysis method for representing and co-designing with players and their narratives. A structured observation including Play Traces studied 17 players over 16 four-hour sessions in the third VTTRPG prototype. We found that players successfully (and enjoyably) co-designed novel narratives. We identified three themes for how traces can affect and support players in shaping new interactive narratives. We present four design implications describing how player-created narratives in MMORPGs should first Reveal & Pull Attention from other players, Invite & Push further exploration, Guide & Assist toward endings, and optionally Show & Hide traces. Finally, we discuss how treating players as co-designers offers a promising approach for developing the next generation of MMORPGs.

SYNTACTIC ANALYSIS OF SENTENCE PATTERNS AND TYPES OF BBC NEWS ARTICLES

Sentence patterns and types play a crucial role in helping writers make their articles attractive. However, few studies analyzed the sentence patterns and types used in news articles. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the sentence patterns and types used in shaping news articles. The researchers used a syntactic analysis to examine the sentences. The data were collected from ten BBC news articles published in October 2020. The purposive sampling was used, and the data gathering instrument was structured observation sheets. The gathered data were calculated using percentages. The results showed five sentence patterns used, namely S+V, S+LV+SC, S+V+O, S+V+DO+OC, and S+V+IO+DO. It was also found that four sentence types, namely simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences, were used. Among the used sentence patterns, S+V+O was the most frequent (42%), and the most frequent sentence type was the complex sentence (52.6%).

Tourist Supply in Fluvial Passenger Transport: Sample of Large and Medium Size Vessels in Manaus, Amazon, Brazil

This article presents an analysis of the tourist offer in fluvial passenger transport in Amazonas, in large vessels, departing from Porto Roadway, Manaus, and medium-sized, offered by the Fluvial Transport Cooperative of Marina do David [Acamdaf] and Cooperativa Solinegro in Porto da Ceasa. It is a quantitative-qualitative, exploratory and descriptive research, using semi-structured observation to collect itinerary data from the selection for the sample of a large and a medium-sized vessel, the description of the structure and service provision. The research is guided by the literature of Lohmann and Netto (2008), La Torre (2002), Sancho (2001) on transport in tourism; Boullón (2002), on the influence of the transport system in the structuring of the tourist space; Queiroz (2019), Macedo (2014) and Pereira (2013) on river transport in Amazonas. The results point to the latent need for structuring the tourist offer of fluvial passenger transport departing from Manaus, due to the scarcity in the offer of other modes that guarantee intercity mobility for residents and tourists in Amazonas.

The Effectiveness of Multisensory Technique towards Reading Skills of Open Syllables by Preschoolers

Unable toreadhas a significant impact on language acquisition that can contribute to children failing at school. Therefore, teachers must utilise methods that are in accordance with the children’s ability during their early stages of reading development to prevent them from experiencing difficulties in a formal school environment. The objective of this study was to observe the effectiveness level of multisensory technique towards children’s skills in reading open syllables. By using structured observation, children were observed using three different multisensory activities such as ‘sand letters’, ‘Alphabet jump’, and ‘tactile alphabet’. 16 open syllables were identified like ‘ma’, ‘ho’, ‘su’, ‘gi’, ‘pa, ‘du’, ‘me’, ‘ga’, ‘do’, ‘bi’, ‘te’, ‘pu’, ‘so’, ‘ri’, ‘ta’ and ‘la’ by using a checklist item from Linus instrument. The study showed that multisensory technique was able to assist in children’s reading skills of open syllables even if they come from different language backgrounds. In addition, this technique helped the children to avoid confusion between Malay and English open syllables with the presence of stimulus during reading activity. This proved that an environment rich with stimulus are important for children’s development. It provides important factors for teachers in delivering meaningful experiences during children’s learning.

The current covid-19 pandemic forces many community activities to be carried out at home. Such "work from home" movement results in the longer gathering time between family members. Naturally, this result can add to the physical closeness and intimacy between them. However, attachment is also seen from the emotional or psychological side. The current study focuses on secure attachment between adolescent children and their parents. The methods employed in this research were structured observation and semi-structured interviews. Based on the observations, it was found that the attachment was well established and had a high percentage. Apart from being physically close due to this pandemic, the maturity of adolescents also became the reason for the successful attachment to parents.

THE EFFECT OF SERVICE EXERCISE WITH STAGE DISTANCE ON SERVICE RESULTS IN BALL GAME VOLLEY

This research aims to determine the effect of overhand serves training with a gradual distance on the results of overhand serves in volleyball games on extracurricular students at SMP Negeri 40 Palembang. The sample of this research was 25 students who took volleyball extracurricular activities. Data collection techniques in this research were through structured observation guided by volleyball playing skills tests from the American Association for Health, Physical Education Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) as the top serves test instrument. Hypothesis testing in this research uses Paired-Samples T Test or t-test with the help of SPSS application (Statistical Product and Service Solutions). The results obtained by tcount (-20,527) < ttable (df /dk 24 = 1,711), which means that there is an influence of overhand serves with a gradual distance to the results of overhand serves in volleyball games on extracurricular students in SMP Negeri 40 Palembang.

Safe and Supportive Neurorehabilitation Environments: Results of a Structured Observation of Physical Features Across Two Rehabilitation Facilities

Objective: This research aimed to identify the extent to which physical features of two neurorehabilitation units appeared to support positive patient experience and recovery. Background: Neurorehabilitation inpatient facilities must be focused on safety management and efficiency of care, as well as being supportive of the patient experience. While occupational safety and risk management is paramount, the supportive nature of the physical setting for inpatient neurorehabilitation following spinal cord injury or acquired brain injury is unclear. Method: Structured observation of two physical environments using an adapted observational tool comprising 237 items across 8 area zones, and 3 major categories (patient safety, worker safety and efficiency, and holistic patient experience). Results: Results indicated that across both neurorehabilitation settings, the built environment attended well to occupational safety, risk reduction, harm prevention and internal security (up to 87% in spinal injury unit [SIU] and 95% in brain injury unit [BIU] patient rooms), but with limited evidence of physical features to support psychosocial needs or promote positive user experiences (up to 30% in SIU and 45% in BIU patient rooms). Conclusion: The built environments observed appeared to be an underutilized resource for supporting positive psychosocial neurorehabilitation experiences (including complex behavior support) beyond hazard management.

As plataformas de informação dos poderes estaduais brasileiros contribuem para a construção da transparência passiva?

The objective of the article was to investigate the contributions of the information platforms of the branches of governments of Brazilian states to build passive transparency. A descriptive study was carried out, through documentary research, with a predominantly qualitative approach. The object of investigation comprises the executive, legislative and judicial branches of governments of Brazilian states. The data were collected in February 2017 using the structured observation technique, through a protocol for recording information. The data obtained were analyzed using the descriptive analysis technique. The indicators for evaluation of the platforms were ‘communication’, ‘login and receipts’ and ‘barriers’, and they presented different configurations in each of the branches. In terms of ‘communication’ and ‘login and receipts’, in general, the state executive branch received better scores compared to the judiciary and legislative branches. On the other hand, the indicator ‘barriers’, was better evaluated in the judiciary and legislative branches. From the results obtained, it is not yet possible to confirm whether the platforms of the executive, judicial and legislative branches of the Brazilian states contribute to build passive transparency.
