Responsibilities, Opportunities, and Challenges for Human Factors in the Digital Age

Today’s challenges for scientific publications require operating at a time when trust in science depends upon effective vetting of data, identifying questionable practices, and scrutinizing research. The Editor-in-Chief has an invaluable opportunity to influence the direction and reputation of our field but also has the responsibility to confront contemporary trends that threaten the publication of quality research. The editor is responsible for maintaining strict scientific standards for the journal through the exercise of good judgment and steadfast commitment to upholding the highest ethical principles. Opportunities exist to create and implement new initiatives for improving the peer review process and elevating the journal’s stature. The journal must address the challenges as well as effectively communicate with the public, who seek a reliable source of information.

Is The Aeneid Relevant to Modern Leadership?

<p>This thesis explores the Aeneid, Virgil's foundation epic of the Latin canon, from a values-based leadership perspective, which is defined as the moral foundation underlying stewardship decisions and actions of leaders. The Aeneid was originally written to enhance the political legitimacy of the Augustan principate, deliver a cohesive national identity, and extol traditional Roman virtues—all of which were deemed critical to the peace, prosperity and effectiveness of the Roman imperium. Further, this study reviews the epic in its historical context, codes the themes of its key leadership lessons, and employs a mixed-method research framework to juxtapose the leadership lessons identified to the demands of modern leadership. Specifically, the Aeneid is analyzed to juxtapose the resonant leadership elements of vision, culture and values—and their corresponding equivalent Roman themes of fatum, pietas, and virtus. Whether viewed qualitatively or quantitatively—in the first century BCE Rome of Virgil or across modern sectors (i.e., for profit, non profit, government)—results from this study suggests that rather than bowing to the illusion that current events (e.g., globalization, communication, computing) are beyond ancient insights, this study affirms the unequivocal relevance of the Aeneid to the demands of modern leadership. First, a compelling vision, larger than any individual, is found to be necessary for organizational success and sustainability in the Aeneid, contemporary Rome, and modern organisations. Second, nurturing the culture or prevailing attitudes, beliefs and preferences through multiple approaches, including symbols and rituals, is affirmed to be a critical aspect of organisational leadership which is shared by ancient and modern leaders alike. Third, the Aeneid was coded into the following eight values (or virtus) in order of importance: integrity, good judgment, leadership by example, decision-making, trust, justice/fairness, humility, and sense of urgency. Of note, integrity was by found to be the most superordinate, essential and resonant value by far—without this the other values are severely lessened in worth. Far beyond transmitting a worn standard diatribe of stoic Greco-Roman values, the Aeneid timelessly illustrates the tensions and tradeoffs facing leaders amidst changing circumstances, challenges, and resource constraints. Far beyond being wooden and moralistic, Virgil adjures leaders to reflectively struggle with inner conflict and growth as they decide on what changes to seek and to what moral foundations must be steadfastly adhered. Far from simply promulgating a celebratory, self-aggrandizement of the Augustan regime, the Aenied echoes an arching vision of the Roman imperium which is universally rooted in the rule of law and climbs to the highest aspiration of mankind’s advancement. In sum, while the Aeneid extols prototypical values, the epic instructs that truly effective leadership is not about being a monochromatic prototype. Rather, the epic reveals that the essence and privilege of effective leadership demands reflection on the dynamic relationship between the leader and the led towards a better, envisioned future.</p>

Political Legitimacy as an Existential Predicament

This essay contributes to developing a new approach to political legitimacy by asking what is involved in judging the legitimacy of a regime from a practical point of view. It is focused on one aspect of this question: the role of identity in such judgment. I examine three ways of understanding the significance of identity for political legitimacy: the foundational, associative, and agonistic picture. Neither view, I claim, persuasively captures the dilemmas of judgment in the face of disagreement and uncertainty about who “I” am and who “we” are. I then propose a composite, pragmatic picture. This view casts the question of political legitimacy as an existential predicament: it is fundamentally a question about who you are—both as a person and as a member of collectives. The pragmatic picture integrates rational, prudential, and ethical qualities of good judgment that were heretofore associated with mutually exclusive ways of theorizing legitimacy. It also implies that the question of legitimacy cannot be resolved philosophically.

Mindful Technology

Mindfulness is frequently invoked as a virtue in discussions of technology, whether in using specific technologies such as cellphones, in creating technologies as new and valuable devices and knowledge, in responsibly developing technologies as “social experiments,” or in participating responsibly as citizens in technological societies. In each of these contexts, mindfulness can have myriad meanings that reflect moral ideals or popular psychological concepts. To explore these meanings, I develop a working definition of mindfulness as paying attention to what matters, in light of relevant values. When those values are sound and applied with good judgment, mindfulness is a virtue.

Automatic Text Summarization for Urdu Roman Language by Using Fuzzy Logic

In the new era of technology, there is the redundancy of information in the internet world, which gives a hard time for users to contain the willed outcome it, to crack this hardship we need an automated process that riddle and search the obtained facts. Text summarization is one of the normal methods to solve problems. The target of the single document epitome is to raise the possibilities of data. we have worked mostly on extractive stationed text summarization. Sentence scoring is the method usually used for extractive text summarization. In this paper, we built an Urdu Roman Language Dataset which has thirty thousand articles. We follow the Fuzzy good judgment technique to clear up the hassle of text summarization. The fuzzy logic approach model delivers Fuzzy rules which have uncertain property weight and produce an acceptable outline. Our approach is to use Cosine similarity with Fuzzy logic to suppress the extra data from the summary to boost the proposed work. We used the standard Testing Method for Fuzzy Logic Urdu Roman Text Summarization and then compared our Machine-generated summary with the help of ROUGE and BLEU Score Method. The result shows that the Fuzzy Logic approach is better than the preceding avenue by a meaningful edge.

Exploring E-Commerce and Corporate Social Responsibility from the Sharia Point of View

This study discusses what is, and what is not a valid and legal contract in Sharia, considering certain stipulated requirements for the acceptability of a contract. It then considers the legality of e-commerce, whether it complies with those stipulated requirements. Business under Islam primarily fulfils a collective religious obligation and fulfil an enlarged scope of responsibilities. In this context, the protection of the e-consumers, the status of an e-commerce transaction and responsible e-commerce are discussed to expose to those who are wondering whether e-commerce is admissible from the Sharia point of view. So that they could benefit from e-commerce if it is proved as an admitted fact in Islam. The final section concludes with a plea for good judgment toward corporate social responsibility practice and avoiding prohibited materials in e-commerce.

Judgment

Why does judgment matter? We expect good judgment from a doctor making a diagnosis, an employer screening resumes, or a professor grading an essay. But even the wisest experts are susceptible to both bias (consistently going in the wrong direction) and noise (randomly missing the mark). The first step to more accurate and precise judgment is to understand the ways in which the human mind jumps to conclusions. Your judgment will never be perfect—but you can strive to be aware of your limitations and to correct for them.

An Empirical Analysis on Various Techniques Used to Detect the Polarity of Customer Satisfaction in Sentiment Analysis

Sentiment analysis is an emerging application of NLP (Natural Language Processing). This is also called opinion mining or attitude detection. In the text mining field, Sentiment Analysis is continuous area of research. It is a procedural treatment of attitude, feelings and textual content. The fundamental thought is to discover text polarity and order it as positive, negative, or neutral. It supports human to take a good judgment. This survey paper gives an extensive summary of the previous updates in this area. Several currently proposed algorithms and numerous upgrades to different SA applications have been investigated and summed up in this review. These articles are classified by their commitment to different SA techniques. Areas identified with SA (business monitoring, polarity observation, social media monitoring) that has recently attracted researchers is discussed. The fundamental objective of this survey is to provide a complete picture of SA practices and associated fields with brief explanation. The significant role of this study includes a refined classification of current papers and a depiction of ongoing patterns in sentiment analysis and research in its associated fields.

Prescription audit a tool to determine the effects of antibiotics in the pediatric inpatient department of a tertiary teaching care hospital in Punjab

Introduction: Health care professionals dealing with pediatric patients face a lot of challenges and pass through hurdles during their daily practice of medicines owing to the scarcity of suitable drugs and other facilities. A fundamental part of the antibiotic prescription is inappropriate due to errors in the selection of appropriate antibiotics, dose, duration, route of administration, and frequency for treatment. Medication use evaluation and audits are an integral part of evaluating whether the drugs are being utilized appropriately considering the social, economic, and medical points. Objectives: The main objective of this study was to do an antibiotic audit to analyze the prescribing pattern in the in-patient department of pediatrics of the hospital. Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted in the inpatient pediatrics department of Punjab Institute of Medical Science and Hospital, Jalandhar. The study was conducted on a total of 150 hospitalized children and infants for a period of two months from February 1, 2020, to March 30, 2020. Results: The analysis of 150 prescriptions was done using IBM SPSS software version 24 and statistical analysis was done. Antibiotic usage was expressed in percentile and the duration of treatment was expressed. Aminoglycosides (Amikacin) were the top most used class of antibiotics followed by cephalosporin. Among cephalosporins, the third generation ceftriaxone, and cefoperazone were found to be mostly used. Conclusions: Accordingly, health care professionals must keep a clear understanding of the need for microbiological diagnosis, antibiotics usage, and make good judgment in clinical situations. Regular antibiotic audits and staff education must be implemented.
