Powder Bed Fusion–Laser Beam (PBF–LB) processing of magnesium (Mg) alloys is gaining increasing attention due to the possibility of producing complex biodegradable implants for improved healing of large bone defects. However, the understanding of the correlation between the PBF–LB process parameters and the microstructure formed in Mg alloys remains limited. Thus, the purpose of this study was to enhance the understanding of the effect of the PBF–LB process parameters on the microstructure of Mg alloys by investigating the applicability of computational thermodynamic modelling and verifying the results experimentally. Thus, PBF–LB process parameters were optimized for a Mg WE43 alloy (Mg-Y3.9 wt%-Nd3 wt%-Zr0.5 wt%) on a commercially available machine. Two sets of process parameters successfully produced sample densities > 99.4%. Thermodynamic computations based on the Calphad method were employed to predict the phases present in the processed material. Phases experimentally established for both processing parameters included α-Mg, Y2O3, Mg3Nd, Mg24Y5 and hcp-Zr. Phases α-Mg, Mg24Y5 and hcp-Zr were also predicted by the calculations. In conclusion, the extent of the applicability of thermodynamic modeling was shown, and the understanding of the correlation between the PBF–LB process parameters and the formed microstructure was enhanced, thus increasing the viability of the PBF–LB process for Mg alloys.

This study investigated the micromechanical and tribological properties of WE43 alloy (Mg-Y-Nd-Zr) alloy subjected to cryogenic treatment and precipitation hardening. Microindentation tests were carried out in the range of load from 100 to 1000 mN. The introduction of deep cryogenic treatment (DCT) was shown to increase hardness and Young’s modulus, and reduce the total indentation work. As the load set during the tests increased, a gradual decrease in the measured values was observed, indicating a significant relationship between the indent size and the value of the measured parameters. Cryogenic treatment used in conjunction with precipitation hardening (after solutioning and after aging) reduces the tribological wear of the alloy. Tests have shown an almost twofold reduction in the area of the wear trace and in the volumetric wear of the alloy, as well as a more than twofold reduction in linear wear, with relatively small fluctuations in the coefficient of friction. Abrasion was the main mechanism of wear. Areas where microcutting, adhesion and plastic deformation occurred were also observed. The results indicate the significant effectiveness of the applied heat treatment in improving the service life of the WE43 alloy containing rare earth metals.

Hydroxyapatite (HAp) and octacalcium phosphate (OCP) layers were formed on Mg- 4mass% Y- 3mass% rare earth (WE43) alloy by a chemical solution deposition method at various pH values of pH 5.5, 6.2, 7.5, and 8.6. Adhesion strength of HAp and OCP layers was evaluated before and after immersing in a medium for 14 days by a pull-off test. The corrosion resistance of these coatings was measured by polarization tests performed in a simulated body fluid (SBF). XRD analysis demonstrated that HAp coating layers were formed at pH 7.5 and 8.6, while OCP coating layers were formed at pH 5.5 and 6.2. Adhesion test results showed that the as-coated pH7.5-HAp layer had the highest adhesion strength of 8.6 MPa, which was attributed to the very dense structure of the coating layer. The as-coated pH8.6-HAp layer showed the adhesion strength of 6.5 MPa. The adhesion strength of the as-coated pH5.5- and pH6.2-OCP layers was 3.9 and 7.1 MPa, respectively, that was governed by the thick and fragile property of the layers. After immersing in the medium for 14 days, the adhesion strength of pH7.5- and pH8.6-specimens decreased to 5.8 and 5.6 MPa, respectively. The pitting corrosion and formation of Mg(OH)2 under the HAp layers were responsible for the decrease of adhesion strength. The polarization tests in SBF at 37 °C showed that the corrosion current density decreased with the HAp and OCP coatings, indicating the improvement of the corrosion resistance of WE43 alloy. The HAp coatings improved the corrosion resistance more efficiently than the OCP coatings.

This paper deals with the effect of microstructure condition on ignition temperature, mechanical and corrosion properties of commercial WE43 alloy prepared by various processing techniques including conventional casting, extrusion, and powder metallurgy methods such as spark plasma sintering. For different processing technique, differences in microstructures were observed, including different grain sizes, intermetallic phases, amount of alloying elements in the solid solutions, or specific structural elements. Mechanical and corrosion properties were improved especially by grain refinement. Precipitation from oversaturated solid solutions led to further improvement of mechanical properties, while corrosion resistance was just slightly decreased due to the fine and homogeneously distributed precipitates of Mg41Nd5. The obtained results indicate huge differences in ignition resistance based on the metallurgical state of the microstructure. An improved ignition resistance was obtained at the condition with a higher concentration of proper alloying elements (Y, Nd, Gd, Dy) in the solid solution and absence of eutectic phases in the microstructure. Thermally stable intermetallic phases had a minor effect on resulting ignition temperature.

Abstract Background The aim of the study is to characterize a biomedical magnesium alloy and highlighting the loss of mechanical integrity due to the sterilization method. Ideally, when using these alloys is to delay the onset of degradation so that the implant can support body loads and avoid toxicological effects due to the release of metal ions into the body. Methods Standardized procedures according to ASTM F-1264 and ISO-10993-5 were used, respecting detailed methodological controls to ensure accuracy and reproducibility of the results, this testing methodology is carried out in accordance with the monographs of the Pharmacopoeia for the approval of medical devices and obtaining a health registration. An intramedullary implant (IIM) manufactured in magnesium (Mg) WE43 can support loads of the body in the initial period of bone consolidation without compromising the integrity of the fractured area. A system with these characteristics would improve morbidity and health costs by avoiding secondary surgical interventions. Results As a property, the fatigue resistance of Mg in aggressive environments such as the body environment undergoes progressive degradation, however, the autoclave sterilization method drastically affects fatigue resistance, as demonstrated in tests carried out under in vitro conditions. Coupled with this phenomenon, the relatively poor biocompatibility of Mg WE43 alloys has limited applications where they can be used due to low acceptance rates from agencies such as the FDA. However, Mg alloy with elements such as yttrium and rare earth elements (REEs) have been shown to delay biodegradation depending on the method of sterilization and the physiological solution used. With different sterilization techniques, it may be possible to keep toxicological effects to a minimum while still ensuring a balance between the integrity of fractured bone and implant degradation time. Therefore, the evaluation of fatigue resistance of WE43 specimens sterilized and tested in immersion conditions (enriched Hank’s solution) and according to ASTM F-1264, along with the morphological, crystallinity, and biocompatibility characterization of the WE43 alloy allows for a comprehensive evaluation of the mechanical and biological properties of WE43. Conclusions These results will support decision-making to generate a change in the current perspective of biomaterials utilized in medical devices (MDs), to be considered by manufacturers and health regulatory agencies. An implant manufactured in WE43 alloy can be used as an intramedullary implant, considering keeping elements such as yttrium-REEs below as specified in its designation and with the help of a coating that allows increasing the life of the implant in vivo.
