OECD identified 11 topics in Your Better Life Index (YBLI). YBLI is generally accepted as an essential indicator of material living conditions and quality of life. This study compared YBLI in two predominantly Chinese regions, i.e., Macau (a former Portuguese territory in China) and Zhuhai in the Greater Bay Area in the southern part of the People’s Republic of China. Data were collected from 446 (231 Macau and 215 Zhuhai) ethnic Chinese residents in the two regions. Results revealed the Macau residents to be much more satisfied with life (significantly higher ratings on more YBLI topics) than their Zhuhai counterparts. Regression analyses revealed Chinese Values and Family Emotional Support to be strong predictors of YBLI in Zhuhai, while Future Prospects and Self-Efficacy explained most variance for YBLI in Macau. The results of the comparisons are discussed in terms of seminaries and differences in the cultures and economic development of the regions.

In-depth interviews were conducted with 42 HIV-positive fisherfolk and 15 health care providers to identify experiences of social support and its influence on access to and use of HIV testing, treatment, and care. Fisherfolk participants reported receiving support at some point. Prior to HIV diagnosis, this usually took the form of advice on what illness they were dealing with and remedies to use. After HIV diagnosis and disclosure to friends or family, emotional support enabled fisherfolk to come to terms with an HIV diagnosis, informational support offered guidance on how best to live with HIV, while instrumental support enabled access to relevant HIV services. Finally, affiliative support, in the form of new friends met through HIV clinic visits, provided a sense of belonging. Each of these different kinds of support assisted fisherfolk to respond positively to HIV with important consequences for secondary and tertiary prevention.

Using the Serious and Violent Offender Reentry Initiative (SVORI) data set, the current study examined the relationship between internal change factors, including agency, readiness for change, and legal cynicism, and four reentry outcomes (recidivism, reincarceration, drug use, and treatment participation). The study also assessed the impact of external change factors, such as family support and perceived neighborhood quality on reentry outcomes. Using a hybrid model approach, we found that within-individual changes in agency and family emotional support were significantly related to decreased self-reported recidivism and reincarceration over time. Within-individual changes in family emotional support were also significantly related to reductions in self-reported drug use and within-individual changes in readiness for change were positively associated with treatment participation across the postrelease waves of the SVORI data. Between-individual results further demonstrate the salience of change factors on reentry outcomes. Study findings inform desistance models and identify some promising targets for reentry programming.
