This article outlines a unique student activity designed to close the gap between students’ perceived and actual communication and team behavior during virtual group meetings. The Communication Audit exercise requires that students record an online small group meeting and then review the recording while categorizing each verbal remark into observable behaviors aligned to the instructor’s learning objectives. The audit delivers objective data to students concerning their team habits and leads to excellent discussions of opportunities to improve team dynamics and individual contributions to a team process.

Internal diversity within organizations and the technology-determined restraints of multinational competition raise the need of developing organizational communication more than ever. Communication audits have been approached as an effective tool for improving organizations’ business targets, but this article argues that communication audits go beyond that and fill the diverse communication needs of today’s manpower. Firstly, the article clarifies the nature of strategic communication and the boundaries of this domain. Then, the paper examines the nature of the term „strategic”. We argue that the results of a communication audit are the first step towards a strategic communication plan. In view of this perspective, the article’s main research questions are: What is the link between strategic communication, communication audit and management performance? How do we measure and illustrate where the organization currently stands in terms of its communication performance? The conclusions of this conceptual paper highlight the role of communication audits in providing useful information for the strategic communication process and HR management by clarifying the nature of qualitative data that are instrumental for strategic communication and how should a researcher report the results of a qualitative study in order to be effective for the strategic communication plan.

The aim of this study is to empirically explore the existence of the audit expectation gap and its impact on investors’ confidence. As a maiden attempt to assess these relationships, we developed a model with higher order constructs using a partial least-squares structural equation model (PLS-SEM). Based on a questionnaire survey with auditors and institutional investors, as one of the main users of audited financial statements, this study explored investors’ perceptions of both unreasonable and sensible audit expectation gaps from diverse aspects. The findings of this study revealed that the existence of an audit expectation gap was negatively related to investors’ confidence, and the greater the audit expectation gap was, the lower the investors’ confidence on audit. It was also found that auditors’ perceived independence and improved level of communication were negatively related with the audit expectation gap but positively related with investors’ confidence. Moreover, the monitoring role of independent audit oversight acts as a moderator among auditors’ perceived independence, auditors’ improved level of communication, audit expectation gap, and investors’ confidence. As the innate characteristic of an audit is to resolve conflict between owners and management of the organization, this study provides insight about what the investors (owners) expect from the audit and how to mitigate those expectation gaps.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop the measures required to assess organizational communication for Japanese organizations, specifically focusing on Japanese care facilities. Design/methodology/approach The data collected from the two-wave panel research, using the question items generated from a literature survey and several interview and focus group interview research were statistically analyzed. For the first wave of the research, questionnaires were distributed to 850 workers in June 2014. In all, 356 completed questionnaires were returned directly to the researcher, a response rate of 41.9 percent. For the second wave of the research, the questionnaires were distributed to 719 workers in February 2015, and 386 completed questionnaires were returned, a response rate of 53.69 percent. Findings Some items were excluded as a result of the exploratory factor analysis using the first-wave data and the constructs of the questions of each dimension of communication were confirmed as a result of the confirmatory factor analysis using the second-wave data. Originality/value While significant research into communication audits has been conducted across a wide variety of organizations in the USA and Europe, very few studies have focused on the development of an appropriate communication audit instrument for Japan. The development of a Japanese communication audit questionnaire is critical. In addition, instruments specific to industries are also required. This is the first study that focused on developing a Japanese organizational communication audit.
