According to Hannah Arendt, a free and public space is an essential condition for democracy. She presents this free and public space as a space between us, where different voices are expressed and are being heard (Arendt, 2012). In order to maintain a democratic social model, the school system needs to facilitate these open spaces where students can acquire knowledge, develop skills and values they need to become active democratic citizens, as well as giving practical training in exercising them. This article gives an insight on how these competences can be learned in an art museum through dialogue. The argumentation in the article relies upon the research of art mediation at Kunstnernes Hus. The research includes qualitative examinations of a specific case where high school-students encountered artworks by Vanessa Baird.

In this study of art museum field trips by high school students, we investigate the ways in which features of different social and mobile technologies, specifically blogs and mobile phones, are able to bridge and support meaning making in young people’s encounters with contemporary art. Empirical material is presented from Gidder, a web-based learning environment with a mobile blogging feature. Through close examination of students’ use of contextual resources and the writing and editing of blog entries, this study contributes a deeper understanding of the ways in which digital technologies may be designed for pedagogical use on museum field trips.

The aim of this study was to substantiate what theoretical knowledge in the field of advertising should be taught, what criteria for the selection of advertising texts should be applied, how such practical training activities of students should be structured. The results of the study were obtained on the basis of teaching practice, literature analysis, interviews of students and teachers. It is shown that the awareness of the structure and linguistic features of advertisement is of great theoretical and practical importance for high-school students, correlating with the personal, metasubject and subject outcomes of mastering the curriculum. Knowledge in the field of advertising genres and assignments aimed at analysis of advertising texts foster students’ ability to distinguish between direct and indirect methods of persuasion, as well as to identify language tools that structure different advertising genres. It is concluded that the development of students’ knowledge about the functions and structure of advertising texts, genre varieties and speech persuasion techniques develops linguistic intuition, the ability to select compositional elements and language tools that are significant for the advertising genres.

Abstract Funding Acknowledgements Type of funding sources: Private grant(s) and/or Sponsorship. Main funding source(s): The researchers themselves. Background Cardiorespiratory Arrest (CRP) is a medical emergency that requires urgent aid as well as technical skills to initiate Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) maneuvers, primarily among the lay population, seeing as the majority of CRP episodes take place in community environments. Purpose The purpose of this study is to compare the Basic Life Support (BLS) skills of high school students before and after a theoretical-practical approach. Method A quasi-experimental study was conducted, consisting of theoretical-practical training on BLS running 60 minutes total (20 minutes of theory and 40 minutes of practice), addressing various steps in layman’s out-of-hospital BLS. Evaluations were conducted before and after training. The instrument was developed by the researchers themselves and underwent a previous validation process. The statistical software employed for the purpose of analyzing the data was SPSS version 21.0 for Windows. At the outset, descriptive statistics were employed to present the data, as well as the Wilcoxon test to compare the results of questionnaires taken before and after the intervention. Results The sample consisted of 322 students from private institutions in Brazil. The median age was 16.0 years, with an interquartile interval (IQ) of 2 years, with 181 (56.2%) students being female and 141 (43.8%) male. The before and after results revealed statistically significant differences in performance: pre-training – median = 5 points, IQ = 2 points; post training – 9 points, IQ = 2 points; p < 0.0001. Conclusion: The conduction of theoretical-practical classes was followed by an increase in correct answers to the BLS questionnaire. The results suggest that simple educational strategies might aid in the training of lay young people to respond correctly to CRP scenarios.

As robot workshops for elementary and junior-high school students are being held across Japan, there is a large variety of teaching-material robots available for them. An increasing number of freshmen at colleges or universities already undertake some basic education on robotics before they enter a college or a university. On the other hand, as research and development of service robots is being promoted as a part of the measures to cope with the declining birthrate and the aging population of Japan, service robots are expected to come into much wider use. Under these circumstances, it is imperative for universities and technical colleges to enrich the contents of their robotics education, especially on service robots. However, there are no robots available as teaching materials. Therefore, we developed an educational service robot and used it to conduct practical trainings with the aim of motivating students to develop robots, as well as enhancing their motivations. This paper reports on the details of this project.
