Central courtyards emerged in many civilizations of the world. Cyprus was no exception as courtyards formed important architectural features throughout the centuries in the residential architecture of the island. The erection of dwellings attached to each other, the need for a private outdoor protected space due to the introverted character of societies, as well as the climatic conditions, i.e. warm Mediterranean climate, led to a widespread use of the courtyard in nearly all traditional residences of the island in the last two centuries. Apart from vernacular architecture, courtyards appeared in earlier historic periods and, in some cases, they were found to be used in the residential architecture of more recent decades. This paper presents an analytical study of the social and environmental aspects of courtyards in the vernacular dwellings of Cyprus. The research underlines the role of the courtyard as an important social gathering area, as well as a microclimate regulator in the residences. Moreover, it highlights its bioclimatic significance in enhancing the integration of nature's elements into the design and overall architectural concept of the dwelling.

The city of Nukus is trying to accept this status on the basis of its socio-demographic process, but it is natural that the bigger the city, the more problems. The main challenge for the rise of Nukus to the level of a megalopolis is to determine the evolutionary demographic growth of the population, to study the climatic conditions, to identify and improve the social infrastructure of the population. The climate of the urban nature, the social infrastructure of the population, the areas and shortcomings of each sector were studied. The result of the active movement of sectors to implement the state program in all areas of the city will serve to prepare for the level of the megalopolis.

In an environment marked by growing claims regarding corporate social responsibility (CSR), debates on governance show the need for taking into account all the legitimate involved parties of the company within the framework of the legal or voluntary financial communication (Dowling and Pfeffer, 1975; Lind B lom, 1994; Gray et al.., 1995). If the accounting regulation, the laws and the rules in western countries require the consideration of the environmental aspects in the accounts and the annual reports of companies (Law NRE, Art 116, 2001), paradoxically in Africa, the OHADA accounting law remains silent on the problems of management generated by this CSR. Is this disinterest for the CSR justified for the OHADA accounting law? Does it mean that the CSR is excluded from African companies? Does it mean that in the OHADA zone the companies are in advance compared to the accounting legislation? In other words, is the OHADA accounting law still relevant to play its role of macroeconomic regulator? This paper examines the evaluations of the social and environmental impacts of the activities of companies and their integration in final accounts for a reliable, true financial communication and reflecting a true and fair view in the OHADA zone.

This study aims to identify how Arab press deals with issues of tolerance and ways of addressing the Other. The study traces this theme in some of the major Arab daily newspapers inside and outside the Arab world. These newspapers are: Al-Ahram, Al- Riyadh, Al-Sharq Al-Awsat, and Al-Hayat. The study argues that the media alone do not create the image or even attempt to change it. In fact, there are other institutions that strive to do this. In all societies, there are institutions that actually provide the raw material which is then used to form the desired stereotypical image of individuals, societies, countries, and institutions. The media then seize this material, forge it and integrate it with framed media packages that are then used as ready-made recipes to produce, alter or reinforce these stereotypes in which the Other is always an embedded element. The study recommends that Arab media need to develop awareness among Arab citizens through enhancing positive principles and values that contribute to the social cohesion of the society. They also need to stress the issue of identity and encourage an active role of individuals in issues of common social interest. They need to promote a culture of acceptance of the Other, however different that Other might be.

A well-designed office environment is often touted as a key motivator nowdays, although it is not entirely clear how to use it consciously. Our goal was to understand the role of the physical environment in new generation offices and whether it can be a motivator at all. We asked open-office employees to describe the three main criteria of an excellent work environment. We analyzed 509 participants' 1456 answers and classified them into 146 content codes. These content codes were further categorized based on whether they refer to the physical or/and the social environment, as well as along the eight needs Maslow described. 82.07 % of the answers referred to the physical environment, ambient stimuli dominated the sample with 324 mentions under 6 content codes (eg.: bright (128), quiet (69)). The majority (55.59 %) of the responses could be categorized under Maslow’s safety needs, but 14.15 % of them referred to one of Maslow’s growth needs (eg.: plants (26), decoration (21)). Using the intersection of Maslow's and Herzberg's theory, we argue that certain physical environmental aspects can be considered as a hygiene factor, some of them as a motivator. And some of them as both meaning some aspects can be considered on more level from an emotional-motivational perspective. Planning an office is not just an architectural question, but a psychological one as well. In order to design human-focused work places we need to understand the exact role and the layering of the physical environmental aspects.

<p class="Keywords">Cities in 21st century are losing identity due to globalization and rapid urbanism. However, great architectural buildings like Sultan Hassan Mosque Complex show us that great architectural wonders can keep this identity and can affect positively in society’s life. The simple aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between architectural features and Islamic meanings in modern world through studying the past. The study is mainly based on two main sources of data, literature review regarding historical part and site visit dealing with discussion of architectural features, uses and effect on surroundings society. Based on these sources, analysis was made based on matrix relationship between two sets of criteria, architectural parts (design, usage, location, artistic features), and mosque significance in Islam (prayer house, community center, center of knowledge, meeting place for <em>shoura</em>). Findings proved the existence of consequent relationship between Islam and architecture, as Islamic principles affect the design of the mosque in religious, social, and service aspects. Alternatively, architectural building satisfies all Muslim needs. This dual effect situation shapes recommend-dations like enhancement of the multidimensional use of the mosque, strengthen the community service role of the mosque, and developing design of modern mosques to fulfill Muslim requirements with 21st century measures and also endorse Islamic values through architecture.</p>
