Gromov’s conjecture states that for a closed [Formula: see text]-manifold [Formula: see text] with positive scalar curvature, the macroscopic dimension of its universal covering [Formula: see text] satisfies the inequality [Formula: see text] [9]. We prove that for totally non-spin [Formula: see text]-manifolds, the inequality [Formula: see text] implies the inequality [Formula: see text]. This implication together with the main result of [6] allows us to prove Gromov’s conjecture for totally non-spin [Formula: see text]-manifolds whose fundamental group is a virtual duality group with [Formula: see text]. In the case of virtually abelian groups, we reduce Gromov’s conjecture for totally non-spin manifolds to the problem whether [Formula: see text]. This problem can be further reduced to the [Formula: see text]-stability conjecture for manifolds with free abelian fundamental groups.

The Bass–Serre theorem supplies generators and relations for a group of automorphisms of a tree. Recently K. S. Brown [2] has extended the result to produce a presentation for a group of automorphisms of a simply connected complex, the extra ingredient being relations which come from the 2-cells of the complex. Suppose G is the group, K the complex and L the 1-skeleton of K. Then an extension of π1(L) by G acts on the universal covering space of L (which is of course a tree) and Brown's technique is to apply the work of Bass and Serre to this action. Our aim is to give a direct elementary proof of Brown's theorem which makes no use of covering spaces, deals with the Bass–Serre theorem as a special case and clarifies the roles played by the various generators and relations.

In this paper, we develop the theory of residually finite rationally [Formula: see text] (RFR[Formula: see text]) groups, where [Formula: see text] is a prime. We first prove a series of results about the structure of finitely generated RFR[Formula: see text] groups (either for a single prime [Formula: see text], or for infinitely many primes), including torsion-freeness, a Tits alternative, and a restriction on the BNS invariant. Furthermore, we show that many groups which occur naturally in group theory, algebraic geometry, and in 3-manifold topology enjoy this residual property. We then prove a combination theorem for RFR[Formula: see text] groups, which we use to study the boundary manifolds of algebraic curves [Formula: see text] and in [Formula: see text]. We show that boundary manifolds of a large class of curves in [Formula: see text] (which includes all line arrangements) have RFR[Formula: see text] fundamental groups, whereas boundary manifolds of curves in [Formula: see text] may fail to do so.
