As an abundant marine xanthophyll, fucoxanthin (FX) exhibits a broad range of biological activities. The preparation of high-purity FX is in great demand, however, most of the available methods require organic solvents which cannot meet the green chemistry standard. In the present study, a simple and efficient purification approach for the purification of FX from the brown seaweed Sargassum horneri was carried out. The FX-rich ethanol extract was isolated by octadecylsilyl (ODS) column chromatography using ethanol–water solvent as a gradient eluent. The overwhelming majority of FX was successfully eluted by the ethanol–water mixture (9:1, v/v), with a recovery rate of 95.36%. A parametric study was performed to optimize the aqueous ethanol precipitation process by investigating the effects on the purity and recovery of FX. Under the optimal conditions, the purity of FX was 91.07%, and the recovery rate was 74.98%. Collectively, the eco-friendly method was cost-efficient for the purification of FX. The developed method provides a potential approach for the large-scale production of fucoxanthin from the brown seaweed Sargassum horneri.

Ophiopogon japonicustubers have been widely used as food and traditional Chinese medicine in China. However, their nutritional composition has not been fully reported yet. This study aimed to analyze the nutritional composition ofO. japonicustubers. Theα-glucosidase inhibitory and antioxidant activities of the extracts obtained fromO. japonicustubers were also evaluated byin vitroassays. The results indicated thatO. japonicustubers are rich in carbohydrates, proteins, minerals, and amino acids. Among four extracts, the n-butanol fraction (nBF) and chloroform/methanol extract (CME) ofO. japonicustubers had high amounts of total phenolic and flavonoid contents and exhibited goodα-glucosidase inhibitory and antioxidant activities. Theα-glucosidase inhibition of nBF was higher than acarbose. Overall,O. japonicustubers are full of nutritional compounds and have goodα-glucosidase inhibitory and antioxidant activities.

Honey is a well-known natural sweetener and is rich in natural antioxidants that prevent the occurrence of oxidative stress, which is responsible for many human diseases. Some of the biochemical compounds in honey that contribute to this property are vitamins and phenolic compounds such as phenolic acids and flavonoids. However, the extent to which these molecules contribute towards the antioxidant capacity in vitro is inconsistently reported, especially with the different analytical methods used, as well as other extrinsic factors that influence these molecules’ availability. Therefore, by reviewing recently published works correlating the vitamin, total phenolic, and flavonoid content in honey with its antioxidant activities in vitro, this paper will establish a relationship between these parameters. Based on the literature, vitamins do not contribute to honey’s antioxidant capacity; however, the content of phenolic acids and flavonoids has an impact on honey’s antioxidant activity.

Sargassum horneri is an invasive brown seaweed that grows along the shallow coastal areas of the Korean peninsula, which are potentially harmful to fisheries and natural habitats in the areas where it is accumulated. Therefore, the author attempted to evaluate the anti-inflammatory mechanism of Sargachromenol isolated from S. horneri against particulate matter (PM)-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages. PM is a potent inducer of respiratory diseases such as lung dysfunctions and cancers. In the present study, the anti-inflammatory properties of Sargachromenol were validated using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), Western blots, and RT-qPCR experiments. According to the results, Sargachromenol significantly downregulated the PM-induced proinflammatory cytokines, Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), and Nitric Oxide (NO) secretion via blocking downstream activation of Toll-like receptor (TLR)-mediated nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) and MAPKs phosphorylation. Thus, Sargachromenol is a potential candidate for innovation in various fields including pharmaceuticals, cosmeceuticals, and functional food.

In this study, the total phenolic and flavonoid contents and antioxidant activities of hexane and methanol extracts of Cotoneaster transcaucasicus Pojark. fruits in the Rosaceae family were investigated. Using the Folin-Ciocaltaeu method, the amount of phenolic substances was determined as 50.34 ± 2.70 mg of GAE/g in methanol extract and 38.06 ± 1.32 mg of GAE/g in hexane extract. The total amount of flavonoids was calculated as 52.01 ± 3.78 mg of QE/g in the methanol extract and 60.54 ± 6.82 mg of QE/g in the hexane extract, using the aluminum nitrate method. Antioxidant activities of C. transcaucasicus hexane and methanol extracts were evaluated by DPPH and FRAP methods. IC50 values of the extracts were calculated as 0.411 mg/mL for hexane extract and 0.237 mg/mL for methanol extract. In addition, it was determined that the reducing antioxidant power of Fe3+-Fe2+ was higher in hexane extract. As a result, it has been observed that the phenolic and flavonoid content and antioxidant activities of C. transcaucasicus fruits are high. This study is the first study in C. transcaucasicus species and it is thought that it will lead the future studies.

Purpose: To determine the phenolic and flavonoid contents of R. sativus rhizome ethanol extract and the hepatoprotective effect of the extract in rats. Methods: Folin–Ciocalteau and aluminum chloride colorimetric tests were used to determine the contents of phenols and flavonoids in the R. sativus extract. Male Sprague-Dawley rats induced with CCl4 to develop hepatotoxicity were treated orally with R. sativus extract for 4 weeks. The  antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of the extract on the liver were determined by evaluating the concentration of oxidative analytes, serum liver enzymes and lipids, and hepatic histopathology and cytochrome P450 2E1 expression. Results: R. sativus extract significantly (p < 0.05) reduced the hepatotoxic effect of CCl4 via its antioxidant activities and protection of liver tissues from oxidative damage. Conclusion: The hepatoprotective effects of R. sativus rhizome ethanol extract are attributed to its highphenolic and flavonoid contents. Two new prenylated isoflavonoids, namely Erinasone A and Erinasone B along with 19 known secondary metabolites, including twelve isoflavonoids, three polyphenols, one flavonol, two flavanones and three steroids, were isolated from the whole plant (roots and aerial parts) of Erinacea anthyllis. Structures of all isolated compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic analysis, including 1D and 2D NMR (1H, 13C, COSY, HSQC, TOCSY, HMBC and NOESY), mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), UV-Vis, measurement of optical rotation [α]D and by comparison with the literature data. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents were determined in this study. Furthermore, the antioxidant and antibacterial activities of the EtOAc and n-BuOH extracts of E. anthyllis were evaluated. These extracts exhibited moderate antibacterial and antioxidant activities. Their IC50 values were approximately 0.04 mg/mL ( n-BuOH) and 0.037 mg/mL (EtOAc). Consequently, Erinacea anthyllis is a rich source of polyphenolic compounds particularly isoflavonoids used as chemotaxonomic markers for the subfamily Papilionoideae of the family Fabaceae.
