Ophiopogon japonicustubers have been widely used as food and traditional Chinese medicine in China. However, their nutritional composition has not been fully reported yet. This study aimed to analyze the nutritional composition ofO. japonicustubers. Theα-glucosidase inhibitory and antioxidant activities of the extracts obtained fromO. japonicustubers were also evaluated byin vitroassays. The results indicated thatO. japonicustubers are rich in carbohydrates, proteins, minerals, and amino acids. Among four extracts, the n-butanol fraction (nBF) and chloroform/methanol extract (CME) ofO. japonicustubers had high amounts of total phenolic and flavonoid contents and exhibited goodα-glucosidase inhibitory and antioxidant activities. Theα-glucosidase inhibition of nBF was higher than acarbose. Overall,O. japonicustubers are full of nutritional compounds and have goodα-glucosidase inhibitory and antioxidant activities.

Honey is a well-known natural sweetener and is rich in natural antioxidants that prevent the occurrence of oxidative stress, which is responsible for many human diseases. Some of the biochemical compounds in honey that contribute to this property are vitamins and phenolic compounds such as phenolic acids and flavonoids. However, the extent to which these molecules contribute towards the antioxidant capacity in vitro is inconsistently reported, especially with the different analytical methods used, as well as other extrinsic factors that influence these molecules’ availability. Therefore, by reviewing recently published works correlating the vitamin, total phenolic, and flavonoid content in honey with its antioxidant activities in vitro, this paper will establish a relationship between these parameters. Based on the literature, vitamins do not contribute to honey’s antioxidant capacity; however, the content of phenolic acids and flavonoids has an impact on honey’s antioxidant activity.

In this study, the total phenolic and flavonoid contents and antioxidant activities of hexane and methanol extracts of Cotoneaster transcaucasicus Pojark. fruits in the Rosaceae family were investigated. Using the Folin-Ciocaltaeu method, the amount of phenolic substances was determined as 50.34 ± 2.70 mg of GAE/g in methanol extract and 38.06 ± 1.32 mg of GAE/g in hexane extract. The total amount of flavonoids was calculated as 52.01 ± 3.78 mg of QE/g in the methanol extract and 60.54 ± 6.82 mg of QE/g in the hexane extract, using the aluminum nitrate method. Antioxidant activities of C. transcaucasicus hexane and methanol extracts were evaluated by DPPH and FRAP methods. IC50 values of the extracts were calculated as 0.411 mg/mL for hexane extract and 0.237 mg/mL for methanol extract. In addition, it was determined that the reducing antioxidant power of Fe3+-Fe2+ was higher in hexane extract. As a result, it has been observed that the phenolic and flavonoid content and antioxidant activities of C. transcaucasicus fruits are high. This study is the first study in C. transcaucasicus species and it is thought that it will lead the future studies.

Jurinea dolomiaeaBoiss., family Compositae, is a medicinally important plant of alpine region. Its tuberous roots are used in various ailments in folk medicine. This study was undertaken to estimate total phenolic (TPC) and total flavonoid contents (TFC) and to determine anti-free radical potential by diversein vitroantioxidant assays. Crude methanol extract (JDME) was fractionated inton-hexane (JDHE), chloroform (JDCE), ethyl acetate (JDEE),n-butanol (JDBE), and aqueous (JDAE) fractions. The results indicated that JDEE and JDCE constituted the highest amount of TFC (807±7.2 mg rutin equivalent/g sample) and TPC (757±9.4 mg gallic acid equivalent/g sample), respectively. Significant correlation of TFC with IC50values was recorded for•OH (R2=0.91), H2O2(R2=0.82), and ABTS (R2=0.82) assay. It could be made clear that JDEE was the most potent in antioxidant activity as compared to others, with generally lower IC50values for DPPH (41.1±1.0 μg/mL), ABTS (46.7±0.6 μg/mL), H2O2(42.2±0.9 μg/mL),•OH (61.1±1.1 μg/mL),O2-(152±1.1 μg/mL), and antilipid peroxidation (54.3±1.6 μg/mL). HPLC chromatogram of JDEE revealed the presence of catechin, caffeic acid, and rutin. The results indicated the antioxidant activities ofJ. dolomiaearoots and merit further investigations for their use in oxidative stress related disorders.

In traditional systems of medicine, the bark of Dolichandroneatrovirens has been used to treat various disorders. The main aim of this study was to determine the anti-inflammatory effect of D. atrovirens bark through the inhibition of nitric oxide (NO) production in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells.For this purpose, preliminary phytochemical composition and in vitro antioxidant activities of various solvent extracts of D. atrovirens bark were evaluated to select the most effective extract.The methanol extract of D.atrovirens registered the highest amount of total phenolics (476.2 mg GAE/g) and flavonoid (129.0 mg RE/g)contents witha strong antioxidant activity as measured in DPPH (IC50 of 19.52 μg/mL) and ABTS (IC50of 10.82 μg/mL) scavenging activities.Hence, the methanol extract was selected for cell line study. Further, the methanol extract of D. atrovirens effectively inhibited the production of NO in RAW 264.7 cells induced by LPS (13.1 μM at the concentration of 80 μg/mL). It could be concluded that the presence of higher level of total phenolic components in the methanol extract of D. atrovirens bark might be responsible for reducing the NO level in cells.

This study was designed to evaluate the antioxidant activity of phenolic compounds for six cultivars of date from In Saleh region (Phoenix dactylifera L.), which were extracted by reflux with solvents, 80% methanol and 70% aceton after the phenolic and flavonoid content were estimated. The total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) of the extracts were measured using Folin–Ciocalteau and aluminum chloride colorimetric methods, respectively. Antioxidant activity acetone/H2O and methanol/H2O extracts using ABTS, DPPH, FRAP, TAC and CUPRAC assays. The results showed that methanolic solvent reflux gives better yields. The highest level of phenolic compounds for all dates varieties was found in the 80% methanol extract. This level ranged from 8.04 ± 0.14 to 46.81 ± 1.22 mg GAE/100 g fresh weight and flavonoid content was observed relatively low for both two solvents. However, extraction into 70% acetone gave the highest antioxidant activity with all assay. These results showed that dates had strongly scavenging activity on DPPH reaching 3.12 µg/mL in methanol/H2O from Cul1 (6.9 µg/mL with ascorbic acid), also on ABTS reaching 6.51 µg/mL in acetone/H2O from Cul2 (104.98 µg/mL with ascorbic acid).

This study was designed to examine the in vitro antioxidant DPPH free radical-scavenging activity, and the total phenolic and flavonoid content of ethanol and methanol extracts of Salvia amplexicaulis Lam. in the whole plant and different parts, leaves, stems and flowers. The largest amounts of extract yield were obtained from the flowers, 14.14% and 12.00 % (w/w) in the ethanol of methanol extracts, respectively. The ethanol extract of leaves (16.07 ?g/ml) and methanol extract of the whole plant (21.28 ?g/ml) showed the highest activity against the DPPH radical. The ethanol extract of the leaves was the richest in phenols (222.40 mg GAE/g) and flavonoids (49.81 mg QE/g), whereas the methanol extract of the whole plant contained the highest amount of phenolics (180.89 mg GAE/g) and flavonoids (38.15 mg QE/g). A very strong linear correlation between antioxidant activity and the phenolic content of the extracts was established. The obtained results suggest that S. amplexicaulis could be regarded as an important source of natural antioxidants.

In present study, the samples collected from different locations of Southern India viz., Yellapur Beltargadde, Siddapur, Joida, Ankola, Sirsi Kangod, Yellapur Shalabail, Sirsi Bairumbe, Karwar of Karnataka and Kasaragod from Kerala were analyzed for the andrographolide content, total phenolic and flavonoid content and screened for their antioxidant potential. The A. paniculata leaves were extracted with three different solvents (chloroform, methanol and water) and methanolic extract of Siddapur showed highest (8.82 ± 0.25 mg/g DW) amount of phenolic content whereas, aqueous extract of Ankola (3.00 ± 1.18 mg/g DW) showed the least amount. Chloroform extract of Yellapur Beltargadde village showed highest quantity i.e. 1.87 ± 0.50 mg/g DW of flavonoid content and aqueous extract of Yellapur Beltargadde showed 0.30 ± 0.20 mg/g DW which was least among all the tested samples. The sample collected from Karwar was found to have highest andrographolide content (9.36 ± 0.02 mg/g DW) followed by Yellapur Beltargadde sample with 7.29 ± 0.01 mg/g DW and Sirsi Kasaragod has the lowest contents of 1.54 ± 0.1 mg/g DW when analyzed through HPLC. Among the nine locations, methanol extract from Joida showed highest percentage of scavenging activity (91.95%) followed by methanol extract of Ankola (90.42%) and chloroform extract of Siddapur (77.31%) which was the lowest value of all samples tested.

This study was aimed to phytochemically characterize and assess the antioxidant activities of 70% methanol extract and subsequent fractions of Cassia absus (L.) seeds, Gymnema sylvestre (L.) whole plant, Nigella sativa (L.) seeds, and Piper nigrum (L.) seeds. Powdered plant materials were extracted with 70% methanol and further fractionated with ethyl-acetate, n-butanol and the residual aqueous fraction. Phytochemical analysis was performed to detect different phytocompounds. Mineral compositions were quantified, and total phenolic and flavonoid contents were determined. The antioxidant potential of methanol extracts and fractions was assessed in vitro through estimating DPPH radical and superoxide anion scavenging activities and reducing power assay. Extraction yields ranging highest of N. sativa methanol extract (30.42�1.49%) and lowest of P. nigrum ethyl-acetate fraction (4.58�0.61%) were obtained. Results revealed that methanol extracts and fractions of selected plants contain phytocompounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, glycosides, tannins, terpenoids, saponins, carbohydrates, fats and fixed oils. The mineral analysis showed considerable quantities of calcium (C. absus methanol extract: 372.454�3.633 mg/100g), magnesium (G. sylvestre methanol extract: 131.045�1.346 mg/100g), and zinc (N. sativa methanol extract: 36.019�0.284 mg/100 g) in all fractions while minor quantities of manganese, copper and cobalt were also found. Methanol extracts showed considerably higher total phenolic (N. sativa methanol extract: 179.71�2.14 mg GAE/g) and flavonoid (N. sativa methanol extract: 189.18�3.17 mg CE/g) contents compared to other fractions, and subsequently exhibited pronounced scavenging activities on DPPH* (N. sativa methanol extract: 23.8 �g/mL) and superoxide radicals (N. sativa methanol extract: 24.9 �g/mL) and had potent reductive abilities (N. sativa methanol extract: 1.123�0.038 O.D.). Conclusively, C. absus, G. sylvestre, N. sativa and P. nigrum possess significant nutritive properties and could be used as natural antioxidant sources to prevent oxidative stress-associated diseases.

Objective: The aim of this study is the estimation of total phenolic and flavonoid contents and the evaluation of cytotoxic, hemolytic and antioxidant activities of the methanolic extract obtained from the species Nonea vesicaria (L.) Rchb. Methods: The total phenolic and flavonoid contents were quantified by Folin-Ciocalteu and trichloroaluminum methods, respectively. The cytotoxic effect was tested by Brine shrimp lethality assay and the hemolytic activity was assessed by spectrophotometric test on human erythrocytes. Moreover, the antioxidant activity was determined by seven different techniques. Results: The phytochemical screening revealed the presence of many classes of secondary metabolites, a moderate level of polyphenols, and a low content of flavonoids. The methanolic extract showed a significant cytotoxic effect with a value of LC50 at 35.7±0.5 μg/mL and induced hemolysis in a dosedependent manner with a value of EC50 at 175.6±0.08 μg/mL. The results of antioxidant activities indicated an important effect on nonpolar systems especially in ferric thiocyanate test and β-carotene bleaching inhibition assay. Conclusion: The methanolic extract of N. vesicaria could constitute an important source of antioxidant and cytotoxic compounds but prudent use is recommended in order to reduce the adverse effects related to the possible hemolysis.
