ABSTRACTThe processes involved in the fabrication of micron-dimension transistors and small-scale integrated circuits using only the technique of direct laser-writing by localized pyrolytic surface reactions are discussed. New experimental findings in the deposition of tungsten by silicon. surface reduction of tungsten hexafluoride and doped polysilicon are presented. The techniques used to fabricate laser beam-written n-MOSFET's are being extended to make unipolar JFET's and bipolar lateral pnp transistors.

AbstractHermite–Gaussian (HG) laser beam with transverse electromagnetic (TEM) mode indices (m, n) of distinct values (0, 1), (0, 2), (0, 3), and (0, 4) has been analyzed theoretically for direct laser acceleration (DLA) of electron under the influence of an externally applied axial magnetic field. The propagation characteristics of a TEM HG beam in vacuum control the dynamics of electron during laser–electron interaction. The applied magnetic field strengthens the $\vec v \times \vec B$ force component of the fields acting on electron for the occurrence of strong betatron resonance. An axially confined enhanced acceleration is observed due to axial magnetic field. The electron energy gain is sensitive not only to mode indices of TEM HG laser beam but also to applied magnetic field. Higher energy gain in GeV range is seen with higher mode indices in the presence of applied magnetic field. The obtained results with distinct TEM modes would be helpful in the development of better table top accelerators of diverse needs.

Purpose This paper aims to provide a review on the process of additive manufacturing of ceramic materials, focusing on partial and full melting of ceramic powder by a high-energy laser beam without the use of binders. Design/methodology/approach Selective laser sintering or melting (SLS/SLM) techniques are first introduced, followed by analysis of results from silica (SiO2), zirconia (ZrO2) and ceramic-reinforced metal matrix composites processed by direct laser sintering and melting. Findings At the current state of technology, it is still a challenge to fabricate dense ceramic components directly using SLS/SLM. Critical challenges encountered during direct laser melting of ceramic will be discussed, including deposition of ceramic powder layer, interaction between laser and powder particles, dynamic melting and consolidation mechanism of the process and the presence of residual stresses in ceramics processed via SLS/SLM. Originality/value Despite the challenges, SLS/SLM still has the potential in fabrication of ceramics. Additional research is needed to understand and establish the optimal interaction between the laser beam and ceramic powder bed for full density part fabrication. Looking into the future, other melting-based techniques for ceramic and composites are presented, along with their potential applications.
